Re: Start-Up Sounds

2018-04-25 Thread Mike B.
Hi Sieghard & List Members,

I lock my screen by pressing the power button / key at the top of the phone,
and when I press this button i get a sound that I've can hear easily . To
unlock the screen I press the Home button twice. I don't know anything
about Lock Screen side buttons. My side buttons are used for controlling
volume, but if I get an incoming call I can press a volume up / down button,
or the power button to force the call to go to Voice Mail. Using the power
button at the top is the only way I know of to lock the screen, i.e touch
the screen all day long and nothing happens, as you say. I do not have any
type of vibrate mode turned on, so whether this makes a difference or not I
don't know. It seems like you're using a different model phone because of
your statement about locking the screen using a side button. I'm using a SE
model iPhone, and to my knowledge, which isn't much, I can't lock the screen
with my side buttons, unless there's a setting that can be switched to allow
this. My example of answering the phone from a locked screen was indeed a
por examble, but I was in a hurry and just used a poor example., but I do
have a setting that allows me to access certain things from the locked
screen.

It seems like I use my phone backwards than most people on this list, but
this shouldn't make a difference. I don't depend on my phone for hardly
anything, i.e, when we're at either of our homes I forward my cell phone
number to that homes home phone number, and turn it off! So, my phone is
off much more than it's on. Now having said all this long drawn out crap
trying to state my point about my start-up sounds, I'm not making up what
I'm hearing! My phone does exactly what I've stated it does, and whether
y'all believe it or not I don't care. I have yet to meet someone that knows
everything, but yet when someone does something differently than others, and
just because some haven't experienced the same sort of experiences as others
they're too quick to make it sound like, like in this case, I'm reporting
erroneous BS!

Like I said in an earlier post a friend of mine has an SE phone and his
phone is reacting the exact same way as mine. Okay, enough is enough, and
we can debate this until..., but no hard feelings and we can all just move
on. I do appreciate all your feedback whether we agree or not because it
does further my learning curve with my phone. Thanks much.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

I guess it depends on what you mean when you say “screen locked”.

If you are using your phone and then press the sleep/power button on the
side briefly the screen locks and at that point you can touch the screen all
day long and nothing will happen.

If, however, you mean that you are at the lock screen when you say “screeen
locked” then that is very different. If you are at the lock screen where you
see your date and time and where you are asked to swipe to unlock then that
simply means you are at the lock screen and not that the screen is locked.

As Maria said, when your screen is locked and the phone rings, the screen
wakes up, displays who is calling and the buttons to accept or decline the
call, all of that is on the “lock screen” but it is not while “the screen is
locked”.

I just tried this and I think maybe Apple replaced the brief vibration one
felt when the phone was plugged in with a sort of ding sound. When I turned
the phone off from the lock screen and turned it back on without having it
plugged in there was no sound. If I turn the phone off and then plug in the
Lightning cable the phone starts up and then I hear this single ding about
15 seconds after I plug it in and then a few seconds later Voiceover talks
on the lock screen.

Sieghard

Yes, I run two phones on one PC using iTunes. I use the same apple id for both;
but you can create separate apple IDs. Then you would need to enable family

I believe you should be able to do this, but one way that definitely works and
which I like best is to simply make another Windows account on your computer
for your Dad, then log into that account, start iTunes, add the music he likes
and go from there.

Can one on Windows, have ITunes set up, to handle two phones, each phone with a
separate apple ID for especially symcronizing music and backing up/restoring?
If so how would this be done? because I'm trying to connect a 4S that used to
be mine (it's now my Dad's with his Apple ID and everything) but when I connect
it to my ITunes to the computer, the hpone thinks it's me that wants to
restore, synchronize etc. What would I need to do then, to set ITunes so the 4s
realizes it's my Dad's ID and not mine? And aso in terms of music, my Dad likes
different music than I, thus what's the process for when adding my Dad's albums
via the computer's Music/ITunesMedia/Automatically add, so the music synchs to
my Dad's ID and not to mine? Thanks for any info or tips you guys can give.

Re: Possible to download files from Sendspace

2018-04-25 Thread Paula Mack
You can do this with an app called Filer. There may be other apps which do
this, but I’ve used this one forever, so it’s the one I know.
Tap whatever link that will bring you to Sendspace from within Safari. When you
find the Downlod button, doubletap and hold it. (This may be just me, but I had
to turn off 3D touch for this to work. After you hold, you should hear a little
soune and there will be a menu. Choose copy.
Then, while leaving Safari open, tap your Home button and go to the filer app.
In the Filer app, go to the tab at the bottom left of the screen that says get
link. Keep swiping left, and you should see the link that you copied from
Safari. Swipe right once. Tap Download. Then, still in Filer, swipe to the
next tab at the bottom of the screen, called Transfers. Select that tab and you
can check the progress of the download.
Once it’s finished, if you select the files tab in filer, you can select the
file, and if you Double tap and hold on the name, you will see all kinds of
options, and you will be able to share the file you downloaded to Dropbox or
wherever.
You can even put files in Voice Dream Reader, so you won’t lose your place, or
you can listen in Filer.
Filer also has the ability to archive and unarchive files if they are zip files.

Yes, they have to be m4r format.
Mark Taylor wrote a nice summary of the steps which has been posted several

Note, iTunes is still required, but iTunes itself doesn't transfer ringtones
any more.
It is just necessary in the process.

Possible to download files from Sendspace

2018-04-25 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I was wondering, is there yet a way to download files from Sendspace, on to my
iPhone?
If so, which Apps would help with this task?
Also, if I want to put the downloaded files on to my hard drive, could I use
Dropbox to accomplish this? Or would I need to use iTunes?
Also, is it possible to unzip files, or somehow play zipped files?

I realize I have a few questions here. I did not want to send multiple messages
to the list.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: Start-Up Sounds

2018-04-25 Thread Mike B.
Hi Sieghard,

What you and Steve say is true, but by going by what you say, how come I can
answer the phone with the screen locked?! Apparently some functions can be
done with the screen locked, but anyways how ever it's doing what it's
doing, at least I can now have a sound play and the phone speak at start-up
by shutting it down / restarting the way I described. We tested with a
friend's phone and it works this way on his phone as well.

I wonder this too, even if the screen is locked when you press and hold the
power button it sort of unlocks to display the “Double tap to power off”
message and you have to double tap to do this.

How can the screen possibly be locked during shutdown or restart? It has to
be unlocked to perform those functions.

2018-04-25 Thread Mike B.
Hi Steve,

I'm not making this crap up! I do understand what you're saying, but all I
can say is that if I turn the phone off while the screen is locked verses
not having it locked, and unplugged, when I turn it on the phone starts 2
different ways! If it was locked / unplugged, and I start it, I get a very
hearable sound & Voice over speaks the first icon, which is Messages. If I
turn the phone off with screen unlocked / unplugged, when it starts there's
nothing unless I touch the home screen. The same exact thing happens with a
friends phone.

Gadget Girl on this list recommended the Griffin stylus which I find great and
cheap! Two blind friends find it difficult to feel through their fingertips and
so find it difficult to type on the on-screen keyboard and also to swipe
without stabbing at the screen. I’ve shown I’ve friend how to use it and he can
now swipe instead of activating items and we both can use it well for
Flicktype.

Re: Start-Up Sounds

2018-04-25 Thread Wayne Merritt
It's true, this exact thing happened to me a few days ago. My phone
was locked and in my pocket, and when bending over, apparently enough
pressure was on the power button that the message came up about
powering off the phone. On the one hand I wish that it was not so easy
to have the message pop up, but then again at least it asks you if you
want to power off rather than doing an immediate shut down.

problem solved there is no rename folder bug

2018-04-25 Thread Davy Cuppens

Sieghard

Yeah you are right. The ghing that is confused is that as you click on edit
it is to edit or replace that particular app but you are right, the first
thing appearing is the folder name so problem solved.

Hi Davy,

This still works for me and I think it is how it has always been or at least
how I have always done it.

1. Double tap the folder you want to change/edit so it opens
2. Go to the first app (or any app) in the folder and swipe down to "Edit"
and double tap
3. Now swipe left or if you are not on the first app find your folder name
and double tap on it
4. You now have a "Clear" button to the right of the name if you want to
clear the field and the field itself with the folder name can be edited.

Hi folks

If you want to create a folder, the ios system proposes a name but if you
want another name instead, you could alter that name by going into that
folder, double click on the name's element and change it in whatever you
want.
Nowadays, clicking on that tekst header causes you to close the folder and
you are back on your main screen.
I find the text header on the left side of the screen where normally the
status bar would appear. After switching voiceover off, tapping that area
and switching it back on, I could alter the tekst of the name of the folder.
So this might be a workaround but you really have to tap on the element very
precisely which is mostly a pain for blind people.

Regards
Davy

RE: Offline maps?

Sorry, I don’t think the Seeing Eye app does offline maps. But I think you can
download offline maps in Google Maps.
As for 3 or 4 Gb that is only if you download all of North America which most
people don’t need.

For the US, you need about 3 GB available, a little less, but best to be safe.
If you want both the US and Canada, it is closer to 4 GB of space. But having
the maps on the phone greatly reduces data usage.
It does have a virtual explore mode for the person who ask about that.

In the US it downloads all maps to your phone, so you need a fair bit of free

Hi folks

If you want to create a folder, the ios system proposes a name but if you want
another name instead, you could alter that name by going into that folder,
double click on the name's element and change it in whatever you want.
Nowadays, clicking on that tekst header causes you to close the folder and you
are back on your main screen.
I find the text header on the left side of the screen where normally the status
bar would appear. After switching voiceover off, tapping that area and
switching it back on, I could alter the tekst of the name of the folder. So
this might be a workaround but you really have to tap on the element very
precisely which is mostly a pain for blind people.

Davy

Re: Offline maps?

2018-04-25 Thread Richard Turner
For the US, you need about 3 GB available, a little less, but best to be safe.
If you want both the US and Canada, it is closer to 4 GB of space. But having
the maps on the phone greatly reduces data usage.
It does have a virtual explore mode for the person who ask about that.

Re: Offline maps?

2018-04-25 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Is this an app to be able to expore from your arm chair, so we got a mental map
before going out? I had a hw device that sort of
did this, but long dead now. I prefer that method than trying to listen to
phone directions when out there and needing to pay
attention to environment instead. Hearing not good enough to do both, barely
enough to do either.

RobH.

Harry,
Here is a note from Larry from American Printing House:
Hi Richard.
NE is starting to add support for international maps. Currently England and
Germany are included in the OpenStreetMap Manager, but
we hope to have the world someday.

Hello, Harry,

What a shame about Navigon! Nearby Explorer lets you download the maps. I'm
pretty sure it's available in the UK.

Best,

NAVIGON is closing down - does anyone know of a voiceover-friendly turn by turn

Thanks
