iOS 13.2: The 13 best hidden iPhone and iPad features we can find, cNet

2019-11-07 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Although some of these features have already been discussed, there are a
couple that I absolutely love, including the automatic document scanning
feature which works beautifully with VoiceOver in terms of guiding a blind
person in lining up the camera for the automatic scan. While I'm not
certain how much use a totally blind person can benefit from this feature,
low vision VoiceOver users will definitely find the Files App auto-document
scanning feature a true treasure.

iOS 13.2: The 13 best hidden iPhone and iPad features we can find
We combed through the iPhone 11 and iPad Pro -- here's what we found.
November 5, 2019 7:30 AM PST

iOS 13 is a pretty significant update.
Apple's iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 launch has been a whirlwind. Since its initial
release, we've seen several updates released in just over a month. The
latest version is iOS 13.2, which added support for the iPhone 11's Deep
Fusion camera trick, and the new AirPods Pro (read our in-depth AirPods Pro
review here), along with a bunch of new emoji. All of that is in addition to
the core features iOS 13 brought to your devices. After you've updated your
iPhone or iPad to the latest software and caught your breath, make sure to
try out the new dark mode (huzzah!), the gesture keyboard and improvements
made to Safari, along with anything else we cover in our complete guide to
iOS 13.

Those features are great and all, but we've also found a handful of features
Apple didn't announce that are just as good, if not better. The new volume
indicator alone is -- chef's kiss -- a feature iOS has needed for years. And
iMessage search, well, it's downright amazing. Don't forget about the new
photo-sharing options.
Below are 13 of the best, hidden features we found in iOS 13. If you haven't
installed iOS 13 yet, make sure you get your phone ready for the update
before taking the plunge. Should something go wrong while it installs,
you'll be glad you took the time. Oh, and if you're still on the fence about
getting an iPhone 11, be sure to read our iPhone 11 review.

1.
Optimized battery charging
Routinely charging your iPhone's ($900 at Amazon) battery to full, and
keeping it there for extended amounts of time, can damage your battery over
time. A new option in iOS 13 is intended to help prolong your battery's life
by learning your charging habits and preventing the battery from immediately
charging to 100%.
If you normally charge overnight while you sleep, Optimized Battery Charging
will keep your iPhone's battery at 80% for most of the night, finishing off
the last 20% of charge right before your alarm goes off.
To use the new features, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and turn
it on.

2.
Use the new Scroll Bar
When you're scrolling a webpage in Safari, a new Scroll Bar shows up on the
right side of the screen. Only instead of just being a handy way to see
where you're at on a page, you can now use it to scroll faster. Try it out
by starting to scroll on a page, then long-press on the scroll bar and drag
it up or down. The faster you drag, the faster Safari will scroll.

3.
Scan documents in the Files app
The revamped Files app now lets you scan documents and save them directly to
your device or cloud storage with little effort. Open the Files app, select
the Browse tab, tap on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, then Scan
Documents. Hold your device over the document you want to scan, and it
should automatically capture the page. You can scan multiple pages into one
PDF file and then save to iCloud, or import it into another app once you're
done.

4.
iMessage search actually works now
Searching for past messages in the iMessage app has always been horrible. It
simply hasn't worked. That's changed. You can now search for a single word
or phrase, and results are almost instantly displayed.
It's pretty cool. To try it, open the Messages app, swipe down to reveal the
search field and type. Neat, right?

5.
Search your iPhone with your voice
Anywhere you find a search bar in Apple's own apps, you'll notice there's
now a microphone on the far-right side. Tap on the new icon to enter your
search query by voice, instead of having to type it out.
Apps like Settings, Mail, Messages and the Today View are just a few
examples of where you can find the new voice search option.

6.
Share photos with or without location information
You can now strip location information from a photo when you share it
directly from the Photos app. The new option means you can leave the photo
geotagged and you can view where it was captured, but when you share it
across social media, email or messages, you can strip that information and
keep any location information private.
Select a photo (or photos) you want to share in the Photos app then tap on
Options at the top of the screen and turn off Location under the section
labeled Include.

7.
New volume indicator
Another long-overdue feature iOS users have been begging Apple

I too think it is a scam. I had one I would say a couple of years ago but I
deleted it and afterword I heard that something like that is a scam. So don’t
ever answer it. I understand it the way they do it is they get you to say yes
to something and then they can track your phone and mess with it. Just leave it
alone and get rid of it.

RE: how buggy does iOS 13.2 remain?

2019-11-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Let's not forget that Steve Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011 and that he was
quite sick for some time. I can't remember if he was still briefly in the
September keynote that year or not, but just as a reference iOS 5 was released
6 days after he passed away and while he was instrumental in the release of the
iPhone in 2007 and probably controlled many aspects of hardware and software
development for the 3 years or so afterwards before he got too sick, Voiceover
did not show up until 2009 so at best he was part of iOS development for 1 or
at most 2 versions afterwards. Back then there were a lot less devices and even
though they are Apple's devices, they still need to be supported. There were a
lot less apps and I would probably not be wrong in saying that many apps were
maybe less complicated, nowadays the sheer processing power of the iPhone
allows for a lot more possibilities. I don't want to totally give Apple the get
out of jail free card here and those who know me also know that I have
criticized Apple on many occasions, but I was simply making a case for the fact
that Apple in my opinion is certainly not abandoning accessibility.
For me one of the worst bugs in iOS 13 is that dictation is extremely
compromised if you are bi-lingual and maybe it's even worse if you are
multi-lingual. I speak German and English fluently and have both keyboards
installed. Dictation in German for the most part seems fine although I don't
use it as often, but when my keyboard is set to English it's absolutely
horrible because often SIRI will try to interpret what I dictate in English as
German and the result is pure gibberish. Sometimes I dictate a shorter part of
a sentence and it's perfect, then I continue and I speak a bit longer and SIRI
inserts what I say half in English and half in what it thinks I said is German.
Like I said, it's horrible and one of these days I will have to turn off
Voiceover and ask a sighted person to start dictation for me to see if this is
only happening when Voiceover is running. I somehow can't see why it would, but
if it isn't and all sighted users also have this experience I am surprised it
wasn't fixed yet and if it is Voiceover related then I have to start bugging
Apple Accessibility about it.

I agree. I would also like to add that Apple is putting more focus on
accessibility in their development frameworks. SwiftUI, Apple’s latest
framework for developing the user interface for apps allows developers to make
a lot of apps accessible without much work. I would say if anything, Apple is
focused on accessibility more than ever before. I will say that when Steve
Jobs was running the company it seems like there were less bugs when IOS
upgrades were first released.

2019-11-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
For me, it's not as bad as IOS 9 was. I had to reboot my phone every
time I answered a phone call for like four months with IOS 9. I had to
restart VoiceOver every time I replied to an email message for two
years. I'm not seeing those problems myself with IOS 13, but unlike all
of those unsympathetic people who didn't have the same issues I did with
IOS 9, I feel the pain of those of you who are running into similar
issues in IOS 13.

that I had little in the way of new strategies and techniques to learn in order
to re-gain an appropriate level of efficiency. I see that the Native Email app
does require me to do some things differently than it did before, however it's
not the first time a major update caused me to have to operate differently.
I've already figured out that when my focus jumps to the top of the screen
after I've deleted a message I merely have to touch the screen about one third
of the way down and my focus is right back where it was. Although I might not
have asked for some of these changes, most are just fine to use, and many do
actually add beneficial functionality.

I do empathize with the hearing aid users who have lost functionality and hope
that Apple will bring that back for folks.

BTW, thanks to all of you on this list for the discussions you've had about iOS
13. Through your discussions I sorted out what I was willing to work with and
what needed to be turned off, and more importantly how I would use many of the
new/changed app functionality. You've helped make the transition a breeze.

Thx, Albert

Saying Apple is moving away from accessibility is complete nonsense.
First of all, iOS 12 even it's earlier versions were better than iOS 11 ever
was so I am not sure why iOS 11 seems to hold such a mystical value for you.
Second, iOS 13.2 still has a few bugs, but overall they are more minor
annoyances for most users, e.g. the fact when you delete emails focus goes up
to the back button etc. Yes, I know there are some more issues around braille
and hearing aids, but as I said, I mean for "most:" users. The problem with
Voiceover going away after a phone call is gone, third party keyboards again
work correctly and all in all iOS 13.2 is stabile, battery usage is good and
it's snappy and responsive.
The addition of Voice Control which probably benefits users with motor
impairments more currently than users who also need Voiceover to me indicates
that Apple's commitment to accessibility is far form dead or even slowing down.
Lastly, every year when a new version of iOS comes out there are initial bugs,
some worse than others and every year for the last 10 years which is how long I
have been using Voiceover (basically since it's first debut) I read messages
like yours where somebody says the new iOS is complete garbage and Apple is not
committed to accessibility any longer so it's nothing new, but it's getting
old. Accessibility is not going away any more, it's far too prominent of a
topic now with most major companies be it Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon or
others being fairly majorly invested in it as well as in its continued
development and improvement.

iOS 13 is by far the worst update to Apple software I've ever seen. I wish I
had stuck with iOS 11—there were some minor annoyances but it basically worked.
And, because I have to download updates over public wi-fi since I don't have it
at home, getting whatever the non-buggy version is will take forever. It's
clear that Apple is moving away from accessibility as a major concern and into
other areas. I hope other phones become more accessible so there are better
choices eventually.

Annoying Facebook App Issue and a VoiceOver Question

2019-11-07 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
For quite some time now, I’ve had this annoying issue when posting or
commenting on people’s posts in the Facebook app. The scenario goes like this:
I’m typing away, either on the onscreen keyboard, or, more frequently on my
Braille display. I’ll enter part or all of a word and WHAM! up pops someone’s
name, completely stealing focus away from my eloquent prose, ha ha. At that
instant I verbally utter some eloquent and dare I say vociferous curses which
fortunately won’t make it into my post or comment. I then have to do a lot of
fiddling about to regain focus on the edit field where I was writing. My
question, therefore, is whether there’s a way to stop Facebook from popping up
what it thinks are contact suggestions? If not, is there a way to tell
VoiceOver to ignore those popups and maintain focus where I’m editing? Thanks
in advance for any suggestions.

One extremely odd bug that still remains is Voiceover's pronunciation of the em

Hi,
I have a couple of questions about Braille Table in the rotor. I use my iPhone

UEB yet and, frankly, I don’t plan to do it until it’s absolutely necessary.
So, my questions are these:
1. Apple has set the system Braille table to UEB and I can add English US if I
want to, so I did. Can I set the system Braille table to English US if I want
to? Last I checked, I couldn’t find a way to do that.
2. Regardless of the answer to question 1, can I get rid of Braille Table in
the rotor? If I’ve set my preferred Braille table and don’t see a need to
change it on the fly, why would I need Braille table in the rotor?

These questions have been bugging me since IOS 13 came out.

navigating by line was fixed for me in iOS 13.2.
Which mail bug are you talking about?
The focus issue for me where when deleting emails and being put back at the top
left on the back button is virtually gone.
It's happened maybe twice since 13.2.

RE: Apple Pay for Sky Ticket Train?

2019-11-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, it does, have used it myself.
Just hold your phone near the area on the faregate where you normally tap your
card and authorize with Touch Id (or Face Id if you have an iPhone X or later).
Your payment method will be preauthorized, but nothing will be charged until
you arrive at your destination and tap out. At that point the correct fare will
be calculated and it is then charged to your card via Apple Pay.

Braille Table in the Rotor

2019-11-07 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
I have a couple of questions about Braille Table in the rotor. I use my iPhone
with a Braille display frequently; in fact, I’m using one now. I have input set
to eight-dot and output set to contracted. I have NOT switched over to using
UEB yet and, frankly, I don’t plan to do it until it’s absolutely necessary.

Tom

RE: how buggy does iOS 13.2 remain?

2019-11-07 Thread Albert Ruel
Sieghard,I was one of the holdouts because of all the drama around the
bugs/inconveniences that iOS 13.X dragged us through, and on Friday evening I
bit the bullet and updated my iPhone XR. I'm pleased to report that after
turning off the Slide To Type keyboard and the extra Haptic feedback I've found
that I had little in the way of new strategies and techniques to learn in order
to re-gain an appropriate level of efficiency.

Second, iOS 13.2 still has a few bugs, but overall they are more minor
annoyances for most users, e.g. the fact when you delete emails focus goes up
to the back button etc. Yes, I know there are some more issues around braille

Most of the bugs I encountered in updating to iOS 13.2 are still there, though
the focus problems in mail seem to be gone. Still getting the misspelled words

I'm still using version 12.42 or whatever the last number after 12 is.
The reason why I'm not updating is because my iPhone 8 is working just fine for
me. I know I'll eventually have to update, but for now, I'll keep using my
phone the way it is.

My email to Apple: FW: IOS 13.01, 02, 03, 13.2 hearing aid issue

2019-11-07 Thread Terri Hedgpeth

Cc: Terri Hedgpeth
Subject: IOS 13.01, 02, 03, 13.2 hearing aid issue

Hello Apple,

I wear Oticon hearing aids and up to IOS v12.4.1, my hearing aids connected
with my iPhone without a problem routing all sounds through my hearing aids
just like any other Bluetooth ear pieces.

Since IOS V13. most sounds are routing through my hearing aids including
Voice Over VO, phone calls, audio books, music, but not the screen clicks
beeps and other audio accessibility cues or what refer to as "earCons."
These earcons are very helpful in providing navigation and icon status
information to those of us who are blind and who rely on VO to access our
phones. I have an iPhone Xr.

I went to my Audiologist yesterday and explained to her what was going on
with the IOS update and she got the tech staff from Oticon on the phone and
I explained to them the issue I was having with V13.2. They put us on hold
for a few minutes to check with the Bluetooth team. When they came back on
the line, they shared with us that this is an issue that only Apple can
resolve. They explained that Apple decides what can be played through the
hearing aids. Now typically I would be quite skeptical of such an answer
thinking they were just passing the buck. However, I believe them because I
have heard from numerous people who are blind that wear hearing aids from
many different manufactures having the exact same experience as I described.
Thus, the ball is in your court to address this huge issue. I can no longer
do anything on my iPhone without others around knowing that I am accessing
my phone. Yes, I could turn those sounds off, however, I need those earcons
to help me do what I do on my phone efficiently. Please feel free to contact
me if you have any questions.

Best,

Terri Hedgpeth, Ed.D.

Opening Links in New Tabs

2019-11-07 Thread kelby carlson
After updating, double tapping and holding on a link no longer presents the
option to open the link in a new tab or share it. Is there a way to still do
this? iPhone 7, iOS 13.2.

2019-11-07 Thread Holly

Hi Josh:

I feel the same way. I have heard too many complaints and lots of problems
related to the latest update and voice over, so am sticking with the earlier
version for now.

Hi Everyone,
My xr phone was working an hour ago, but as I just turned it
on, there is no sound at all coming from the phone! I've
tried everything I know to try to get voice over to talk,
but no go! I tried the three finger double tap just in case
I might have muted it without knowing, but still that didn't
work. I tried two finger double tap, but still no go! I
tried pressing the side power button three times, but still
no go! I can't even get Siri to respond by pressing the
side button! I don't have the hey Siri feature turned on.
The phone appears to be completely dead! Although, I did
get a phone call, and the phone did ring, but when I tried
to answer it, it stopped ringing, I did get an alert because
whoever they were they left a message. Any suggestions
please!
Thank you all!
Janet

Peace Be With You.

2019-11-07 Thread kelby carlson
iOS 13 is by far the worst update to Apple software I've ever seen. I wish I
had stuck with iOS 11—there were some minor annoyances but it basically worked.
And, because I have to download updates over public wi-fi since I don't have it
at home, getting whatever the non-buggy version is will take forever. It's
clear that Apple is moving away from accessibility as a major concern and into
other areas. I hope other phones become more accessible so there are better
choices eventually.

netflicks has it. so does prime. not all shows are described but a lot of
them are. you have to select the audio description option. You can go on the
netflicks site or the amazon prime site to get a full listing.

Re: BT mic for iphone/Pad

2019-11-07 Thread Richard Turner
Dolby On is working on the UK license, but no idea when that will happen.
MTSR is another recording app that is accessible and it is a multi-track
recorder, and free.
Audio Memos is very good, but the labeling of the various elements could be a
lot better. It does allow you to turn off the Apple filters so you get a better
recording.
Some people swear by Ferrite but I find it way complicated.
Just Press Record I think is around $5 US, and it can automatically save to the
cloud, and can be used to try and get text dictation out of the spoken words,
but I find it only works well if a person is speaking like they are dictating,
using punctuation etc.
Turning off the transcription, then works like other recorders.
For really good quality, I'd go with Audio Memos, which will cost around $10 US
for the full featured version or DolbyOn when you can get it.

Re: simplifying the rotor

2019-11-07 Thread Arnold Schmidt
When I first started using the rotor, I found the method of putting two fingers
onto the screen, spread slightly apart, and turning the phone to be the most
effective way to use it. I now can turn the rotor with my two fingers alone.
Once you get use to using it, then go into voice over settings, rotor, and
customize what you want to access with the rotor, it adds a whole new realm to
using your phone. It definitely is worth learning to use the rotor.

Hi Anthony,

One way to think of the rotor is a knob. Put two fingers on the screen and
imagine there is a small knob between them. Then turn the knob.

If that doesn't help, put one finger from each hand on the screen. Slide one
toward the top of the screen, and at the same time, slide the other toward the
bottom. Switch directions with both fingers to go in the other direction.

A third way is to put two fingers on the screen and hold them still while you
turn the phone with the other hand.

I hope that helps.

best,
Anna

Re: Voice Over Help Please.

2019-11-07 Thread Arlene
Janet, if you don't already have itunes installed on your computer, having
itunes set up on your computer, you could see what you could figure out that
way. It will let you turn voice over on amoungst several other things, such
as checking your phone number, battery status and other things. Most
importantly it will let you back up your phone and restore your iphone, so
itunes is quite useful to have on your computer.

Subject: Voice Over Help Please.

Hi Everyone,
My xr phone was working an hour ago, but as I just turned it on, there is no
sound at all coming from the phone! I've tried everything I know to try to
get voice over to talk, but no go! I tried the three finger double tap just
in case I might have muted it without knowing, but still that didn't work.
I tried two finger double tap, but still no go! I tried pressing the side
power button three times, but still no go! I can't even get Siri to respond
by pressing the side button! I don't have the hey Siri feature turned on.
The phone appears to be completely dead! Although, I did get a phone call,
and the phone did ring, but when I tried to answer it, it stopped ringing, I
did get an alert because whoever they were they left a message. Any
suggestions please!

Thank you all!
Janet

Peace Be With You.
