Re: check out the new features of GPS app - Seeing Assistant Move

2014-08-08 Thread Seeing Assistant
Seeing Assistant Move in Lite version has some limitations:

   - lack of Dropbox support
   - lack of support for zip, ldb and ckp files
   - inability to import Loadstone control points as route
   - only one database can be active at any given time
   - only one custom route can be created
   - only five points can be created
   - only five points can be added to the Favorite Points
   - only 10 minutes of “monitoring” function a day
   - only 20 voice commands can be used during one day

These information are in tutorial which is also available online:

Suggestions for a Grocery list

2014-08-08 Thread Margaret Booth
At present I am using Wunderlist and it has just been upgraded and now it
isn't accessible. Before it was upgraded I had no problems using the app. In
it I could create my own lists and share the lists with my husband and when
either of us entered a new item to the list it would show up on the other
persons phone.

What I want to know can anyone suggest any accessible apps that I could use
to create lists in such as grocery lists and I can share them with my
husband. When we share the lists and either I update the list or he does and
the updated items in the list show up on either of our iPhones.

Hi,

When I set reminders and look in the app, there seem to be two states, ticked
and unticked, is a ticked reminder one that has already triggered and won't be
triggered again.
Do they need to be ticked or unticked to actually go off?

It's a lot easier than that. For instance:
remind me to take the trash out tomorrow at 7
or
wake me up at 6:20
or
remind me to start dinner in 2 hours
or
set the timer for 45 minutes

Can I say something like new reminder with alarm and then it will prompt me for
an alarm time?

Hi, Everyone.

How do I get a book that I downloaded from BARD via the Wishlist on the

We're in for a hurricane on Sunday and a tropical storm before that. I'm

Yes, Seeing Assistant works all over the world. You can use on-line

Suggestions for grocery list

2014-08-08 Thread Margaret Booth
Thanks to everyone suggestions about grocery list. There's one problem I
actually need a grocery list that is compatible with iPhone and Android. My
husband does have an iPhone but he just brought an android phone home from
work and he will be mainly using this phone.

RE: Reminders And SIRI

2014-08-08 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Hi,

Just set a test reminder, it made a ding noise but didn't actually say the
reminder as the screen was locked.
Is this all that reminders do?
I was expecting it to be a bit more in your face e.g. it keeps playing the
alarm tone until you accept it or something?
If I miss a reminder, do I then have to manually go in to rmeinders to look at
the list of things to do?
I am guessing that a reminder may work slightly differently to an alarm then?

Thanks in anticipation for any help.

2014-08-08 Thread Jane
You can't. If you really want to save books, it is best to download from the
computer and transfer them to BARD that way, leaving copies on the computer.
You can add to iTunes and transfer that way. Or you can just do what I do,
download them again when I want them--but I d have some saved to the computer
so I can play them on my NLS player.

I pod touch will not be getting KNFB reader

2014-08-08 Thread Russ Kiehne
The following is an email from James Gashel in response to my question
about KNFB reader on a Ipod touch 5th generation.

While we eventually hope to support use of the KNFB Reader app on the
iPod Touch and later models of the iPad, our testing so far, running iOS
7 indicates very poor results because of camera limitations in these
devices as compared to the iPhone 5 series. However, with changes being
made in iOS 8, we may find that we can support some of these other
devices in the near future.

Best,

Re: Reminders And SIRI

2014-08-08 Thread Chris Chaffin
Reminders do not go away until the checkbox is checked. By checking the box,
you are saying that the task is complete.
I use the today screen in my notifications to check my calendar events and
reminders for that day. I like this because it puts everything in one place.
And remember, you can navigate the today screen in notifications by heading, so
it is easy to check what you are looking for.
For daily task, like take the garbage out, water the plants, or etc., I
actually put the same time for all of my reminders. For example, I put the
time for my daily reminders for 7 o'clock in the morning, so when I check my
today screen, all of my reminders are there for the day, and they will stay
there until I complete them.

I hope this has been helpful.

I should add to hear that both touchscreens textures and keyboard commands
which accomplished gestures can be combined seamlessly. So, for instance,
sometimes I use my keyboard to reply to email, in which case I would find
the correct button on the screen and activate it by double-topping on it,
and then use the keyboard to write my message. Then I would touch the send

Hi Michelle,

OK, I now understand what you mean by Voiceover commands with a Bluetooth
keyboard. Well, I have been an iOS user for almost 5 years and while I do
have a Bluetooth keyboard, I don't use it a lot and when I do it's mostly
when I really want to write a long email on my iPhone. Otherwise I
exclusively use touch screen gestures which really is what the iPhone is
designed for. Apple has done a fantastic job of adding Bluetooth keyboard
and braille display support, but I prefer to use the touch screen
especially

for just navigating around and reading.

Yes, voiceover gestures are where you tap the screen, flick up or down,
etc.

and voiceover commands are where you hold down the vo keys and then other
keys on the keyboard. If you are not a JAWS user, it can be difficult to
get familiar with using the keyboard for commands and learning basic
gestures such as taps and flicks is a much easier way to navigate the
screen. I imagine that many JAWS users can easily transform to learning
Voiceover commands as they are used to navigating the keyboard with
commands, but as a non JAWS user, it is a lot to learn.

Yes, try try Any List You can create grocery lists and check off items.
Those lists can be shared between you and your husband and both of you can add
or remove items as needed as well as to cross them off the list when bought.
You can also create other kinds of lists such as school supplies for back to
school for the kids or projects like remodeling a room etc. The app is totally

Subject: Suggestions for a Grocery list

At present I am using Wunderlist and it has just been upgraded and now it
isn't accessible. Before it was upgraded I had no problems using the app. In it
I could create my own lists and share the lists with my husband and when either
of us entered a new item to the list it would show up on the other persons
phone.

What I want to know can anyone suggest any accessible apps that I could use
to create lists in such as grocery lists and I can share them with my husband.
When we share the lists and either I update the list or he does and the updated
items in the list show up on either of our iPhones.

Turn off your phone and turn it back on, make sure you empty the app
switcher before you do this and wait about 30 seconds after you double
tapped to turn off the phone before turning it back on.
If that doesn't clear it up then they are probably there somewhere.

You can't. If you really want to save books, it is best to download from the
computer and transfer them to BARD that way, leaving copies on the computer.
You can add to iTunes and transfer that way. Or you can just do what I do,
download them again when I want them--but I d have some saved to the computer
so I can play them on my NLS player.

put it on your phone from that app too. You have to have the book zipped.

Re: Facebook messenger

2014-08-08 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey guys,

In the Facebook messenger app to delete a message when in the recent
conversations view touch the screen and make sure VO is on the message you want
to delete then do a single finger double tap on the right side of the screen
and on the second tap hold your finger and swipe to the left. once you have
done that you can then do a single finger double tap which brings up the
archive mark as spam options. Yes, it's confusing and a total pain but I guess
the geniuses at Facebook accessibility just can't seem to come up with another
method for Voiceover users. Hope this helps

RE: I pod touch will not be getting KNFB reader

2014-08-08 Thread Øyvind Lode
I listened to an interview where James Gashel confirmed that the KNFB Reader
will run just fine on an iPhone 4S.
But he also said that for best results the iPhone 5S and newer is highly
recommended due to much better camera and cpu.

I wonder if the iPhone 4S then will be able to run KNFB Reader let alone the
iPhone 4. As far as I know the iPod Touch very much has the same 5 MP eyesight
camera as the iPhone 4S.

Best,
James Gashel

RE: Facebook messenger

2014-08-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The double tap and hold and then swipe left method works for me sometimes, but
usually once it works once I can’t delete more messages the same way. I think
the Facebook Messenger app is a real pain in the neck and hopefully those who
use Facebook a lot more than me will write to Facebook to request accessibility
improvements. I don’t understand why they can’t implement the action rotor here
and allow for deletion of messages in a thread/chat as well as the deletion of
an entire thread./chat that way. The rotor could also include options like
Forward and Mark as Spam.

The voice messages feature also requires some attention, it’s not very
intuitive and a sighted friend told me that when I tried to play a voice
message and instead always got something else that there is a small Play button
to the left of the message which Voiceover doesn’t go to.

There are I think monthly updates to Facebook and Facebook Messenger and I
don’t recall ever seeing something in the What’s New notes like “Voiceover
improvements” or “Accessibility improvements”. A company as large and as
pervasive as Facebook really should invest in accessibility and have a stronger
commitment to it.

Sieghard

YOu're right - reminders play once and stop, unlike alarms. But they can

I am guessing that a reminder may work slightly differently to an alarm then?

Report on Sennheiser MM30i Earphones

2014-08-08 Thread Alan Lemly
I have a weakness when it comes to earphones and wanted to report on the
latest wired ones I've tried with my iPhone 5. The Sennheiser MM30i
Earphones are okay but save your money and enjoy the

Apple EarPods with Remote and Mic that Apple has been supplying with iPhones
beginning with the iPhone 5. The Apple earpods have a better sound and
quality finish compared to the Sennheiser MM30i and at $29 with free
shipping, you can't beat the price. The Sennheiser sound is a bit brighter
than the Apple and just doesn't sound as rich or as good to me. I realize
headphone sound quality is one of the most subjective topics we're likely to
discuss but I wanted to share my opinion that the Sennheiser MM30i earphones
are not worth the Amazon price of $42 especially when compared to the Apple
product. The MM30i has all the same features and capabilities with their
remote and volume buttons as the Apple earpods so they'll serve as a good
backup pair for me.

Re: Help navigating in the Audible app please and thank you

2014-08-08 Thread Lois Butterfield

Hi Lee,

At the bottom left is the sleep timer. Right to the right of that is the
chapters and bookmarks button. If you go in there, you can choose a chapter
you want by swiping. At the top, middle, it will tell you where you are in
a certain chapter by minutes. Just under that, it will say which chapter
you are on. You can go back or forward a chapter by double tapping the left
hit button or the right hit button. The left one is under the one that
tells you how far you are into the current chapter on the left. The right
hit button is on the right under where it tells you how far into the chapter
you are. That info is all across the top. In other words, the chapter
number is in between the right and left hit buttons.

Have fun. It's a great app.

Canceling a Beats Music Subscription

2014-08-08 Thread Jim Fettgather
Man, I am ticked off!
I had downloaded the Beats Music App and subscribed for a month, it’s still
just as inaccessible as ever on IOS!!

So, trying to cancel the subscription is a nightmare!
First, the Beats web site tells you to go to the manage your account page, from
which you can cancel your subscription, but then another link says to go to the
Apple Itunes support pages, and the link to that page cannot be found!
It looks like there’s no way to cancel a subscription to this hideous service
for this dismal app.
At least, none that I can locate.
Any suggestions will sure be appreciated, I am completely disgusted with this
inaccessible app and what appears to be no easy way to cancel a subscription.
Thanks.

Find My Phone

2014-08-08 Thread Harry Bell
My iPhone 5s touch screen stopped working today and no matter what I or my
sighted partner did we could not get it to work reliably. It would not even
register the numbers for the pass code despite switching the phone off and on
again. I connected the phone to my PC running iTunes in order to do a restore
from latest backup but I got a message saying I had to turn off Find my phone
on the iCloud settings of the iPhone before it would allow me to restore from
backup. Fortunately the touchscreen started cooperating again at this point so
I was able to get into the phone settings and turn off Find my phone on iCloud
before doing the restore from backup. But what if I had not been able to get
into my phone? Is there any way to turn off Find my phone from within iTunes
while the phone is plugged in? Harry

Skype, Deleting Chats

2014-08-08 Thread SSEric

I think this topic came up with one of the later versions of Skype, but I did
not pay attention then and did not upgrade Skype until yesterday when I was
forced to. I could not find the answer in the archives.

Can someone refresh how do you delete old conversations/calls.

All thanks!

Eric

RE: Skype, Deleting Chats

2014-08-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Eric,

Very easy and reliable: when you are on a chat you want to delete, double
tap and hold on the right side of the screen. After the little tone you get
when you do a double tap and hold you hear another tone and at that point
just swipe to the left of the screen without lifting your finger. Voiceover
will put focus right on the delete button, just double tap and it's done.

Re: Find My Phone

2014-08-08 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi harry, yes, this is part of the new anti-theft measures introduced with iOS
7. Usually they can provide peace of mind, but occasionally they can be a
hindrance to a legitimate attempt to get out of a bind.
The first thing I would do in your situation is to warm reset the phone. Hold
down the home and power buttons for about six seconds, then release them and
the phone should reboot.
If the problem had persisted, you could have put the phone into DFU (Device
Firmware Update) mode. To do this, connect the phone to iTunes, then hold down
the home and power buttons for about 6 seconds. Release the power button, but
keep the home button held down until iTunes pops up with a message saying that
it's detected a phone in DFU mode. You can then restore the OS, then restore
your backup. A bit drastic, but it's the only way around it in the
circumstances you describe.

At present I am using Wunderlist and it has just been upgraded and now it

either of us entered a new item to the list it would show up on the other

What I want to know can anyone suggest any accessible apps that I could use

the updated items in the list show up on either of our iPhones.

You can't. If you really want to save books, it is best to download from the
computer and transfer them to BARD that way, leaving copies on the computer.
You can add to iTunes and transfer that way. Or you can just do what I do,
download them again when I want them--but I d have some saved to the
computer so I can play them on my NLS player.

RE: Canceling a Beats Music Subscription

2014-08-08 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Jim,

I did a bit of research for you because I know how frustrating these kinds of
things can be.

First, for assistance, contact Beats Music at 800-442-4000.

Second, assuming that you subscribed to the Beats Music service via A T T
billing, they suggest that you do the following:

If you really must cancel your Beats Subscription billed through ATT you can
do it easily, directly from your device, by following the steps below:

1.
Go to ATT Mobile Purchases att.com/db and enter the 10-digit ATT wireless
phone number of the device that was used to make the purchase.

2.
Select Next. An 8-digit one-time PIN will be sent to the device. You will need
access to this device.

3.
Enter the 8-digit one-time PIN, and then select Submit. On the Purchases
Summary screen, you'll see your recent mobile purchases.

4.
Select the subscription or service you want to cancel.

5.
Once the new page opens, check the box marked Cancel Subscription.

6.
Select Submit Request.

Jim, the URL containing the steps listed above is:
https://support.beatsmusic.com/hc/en-us/articles/200769920-How-do-I-cancel-my-Beats-Subscription-through-AT-T-

Good Luck,

Thanks.

 Hi Eric,

 Very easy and reliable: when
you are on a chat you want to delete, double
tap and hold on the right side of the screen.
After the little tone you get
 when you do a
double tap and hold you hear another tone and at that
 point
just swipe to the left of the screen
 without lifting your finger. Voiceover
 will
put focus right on the delete button, just double tap and
 it's done.
