RE: Issue with the latest GoodReads app and item counts

2018-02-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Wayne,

I cannot reproduce your issue.

After updating to iOS 11.2.6, I opened the Good Reads app, after reading your
post, and all is as it should be. All of my bookshelves have the correct
numbers associated with them.

Perhaps you should first uninstall and then reinstall the app.

Let us know how it goes.

Subject: Issue with the latest GoodReads app and item counts

Greetings. I'm having an issue with the GoodReads app on my iPhone 7 Plus with
iOS 11.2.6. My total books read was around 1200 and I had about 27 books on the
want to read shelf. I wrote a review for a book I had finished earlier tonight,
and the next time I looked, my counts were reset to zero. I restarted the app
several times and even updated to the recent iOS release, and restarted again
like I always do. Even so, when I opened GoodReads, my counts were still at
zero or 1. The strange thing is I can access all the books I have finished that
were in the original 1200 total, but the numbers are showing wrong on the My
Books tab of the app. Any ideas or thoughts? Figured I would reach out to the
list before contacting GoodReads.

Thanks,

Wayne Merritt

iOS: How to Use Siri Hands Free From Your iPhone Lock Screen - The Mac Observer

2018-02-23 Thread M. Taylor
iOS: How to Use Siri Hands Free From Your iPhone Lock Screen
by Andrew Orr, Feb 23rd, 2018 3:35 PM EST

It's possible to use Siri hands free from your lock screen, but sometimes
you might run into a bit of trouble like I did. Here's what I learned about
it, and how I solved my problem.
Siri
When I first got my AirPods, I was pleased at being able to use Siri just
with a double tap of my finger. I like being able to listen to music while
cooking dinner, and now I can leave my iPhone on my desk and change songs
with my AirPods.
But recently, I noticed that Siri was acting different. When I tried to
change music with my AirPods, I was forced to unlock my iPhone with my
fingerprint first. It seemed weird when I didn't have trouble before, but
then I figured out the problem.

Notifications
Here's what happened. For a bit more privacy, I decided to hide notification
previews on the lock screen. You can do this on iOS by going to Settings >
Notifications > Show Previews. When you select "When Unlocked" you still get
notifications, but the content is hidden until you unlock it. This is a
great feature, and it prevents people from seeing your notifications when
your iPhone is on the table.
But it's also the reason why Siri stopped working. Even though I allowed
Siri access on the lock screen, under Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, I
still had to unlock the phone. And that's because the notification previews
interfered. I don't know why this happens, but you can fix the problem by
changing the notification previews to Always. This is turned on by default
on iPhone X because of Face ID.
Hopefully in a future iOS update, Apple can allow both Siri access and
hidden notification previews. It's a trade-off we have to make, because it
means anyone can use Siri if your phone is unlocked. But it makes it
impossible to use Siri with AirPods. Privacy versus convenience, as usual.

iPhone Messages: 12 texting tips you didn't know the iPhone could do

2018-02-23 Thread M. Taylor
12 texting tips you didn't know the iPhone could do

By Kim Komando, Special for USA TODAY Updated 5 hours ago

"Hey, can I call you?" I bet millions send this text every day. It's common
etiquette. You text first and see whether someone is busy. If you get a
"Sure," or "Y," or "K," you can ring that person up.
Texts used to be handy; now they're an integral part of our lives. We hold
entire conversations via text. We exchange GIFs, emojis, and videos with
ease. Not sure what kind of butter to buy? Text your spouse a picture of two
brands to get the answer.
Waiting for that response can be painful, especially if you're not even sure
the person has seen your text. But there is a way. Click here to find out if
the recipient has read your text messages.
Here are iPhone texting tricks you wish you've known all along.

Reply directly from a notification
If you have an iPhone 6S (or later model), you're probably familiar with 3D
Touch even if you don't use it very much. This feature lets you press your
screen with different amounts of finger pressure to access more options.
This is kind of like hovering over an icon with your mouse, but better. Once
you start using 3D Touch, you get it.
For example, with 3D Touch, you don't have to open the Messages app to reply
to a message. Just do a long hard press on the lock-screen text notification
itself to reply. If you're in a hurry, this feature will save you time,
although 3D Touch does require some practice.

Use 3D Touch for quick replies
You can also use 3D Touch for a long hard press on a text within the
Messages app to send quick fun replies such as "like," "heart," "unlike,"
"laughter" and question mark icons. This will spare you the task of browsing
the full catalog of emojis for just the right one.

Know how to copy and forward
Copying messages in Messenger can be tricky because it's always hard to
highlight a body of text on your phone using only your finger. But sometimes
you want to forward the entire contents of text - to show it to someone
else, to re-submit deleted info, or to archive important correspondence.
Instead of copying and pasting a message's text to forward it, you can
simply "long press" a message (similar to quick reply). Tap More on the
bottom menu, and then select the arrow on the bottom left corner to forward
it. The original message's content will be copied as a new message. Just
select the recipients as usual.

Share your location with a tap
Why would you need to share your location with anyone on the Messages app?
Parties, for one. You can easily direct lots of people to an obscure
location, such as a cabin at the end of a spidery gravel road in the middle
of the night. In theory, you could also use it for emergencies.
(For privacy reasons, you probably don't want this feature on all the time.
But in case you need it, you can easily share your location with anyone
within the Messages app).
To share your location in the Messages app: Open a conversation thread then
tap the little "i" icon in the upper-right corner of your screen to open the
contact's details.
To send your current location (including a map) to the particular contact,
tap Send My Current Location.
If you want to send someone regular updates about your location, you can tap
Share My Location instead.
On your kid's phone, go to Contacts, and select your name.
On your own contact page, scroll down and tap Share My Location.
Choose between Share for One Hour, Share Until End of Day, or Share
Indefinitely.

Save data with this quick fix
Sending photos via text messages can be data-intensive. If you have a mobile
data cap, you can eat through it in no time. You don't always need to send
megabytes-worth of material by text message, especially when you're not
connected to Wi-Fi.
To save bandwidth, you can opt to send low-quality photos in your iPhone
text messages instead. Here how's you do it: Go to Settings >> Messages >>
and scroll all the way down and toggle Low Quality Image Mode to On.

Stop the irritating alerts
The good news is that iPhones will send you two text alerts when you receive
a message, as well as the optional accompanying sounds. This is a default
setting, and you'll receive the two alerts within a two-minute interval.
While this is great for most occasions, I personally found it redundant.
To have your iPhone send single text alerts only, do this: Go to Settings >>
Notifications >> Messages. Scroll down to Repeat Alert then set it to Never.

Silence maddening group messages
We often join a group-texting session, and we get the information we need,
and then we think, "Okay, I'm done. No need for more texts." But still the
alerts ping, ping, and ping away, and they can easily get overwhelming.
Thankfully, you can silence these group alerts on your iPhone.
To mute group message alerts, swipe left on the group message then tap Hide
Alerts. You'll then see a moon icon on the left side of the group to
indicate that it's muted. Nice.

Hello Everyone,

I have heard some reports that updating to iOS 11.2.6 removes the battery
indicator for some users. I do not know if this issue refers to merely the
visual indicator or not.

It may be that, regardless of the visual icon, VoiceOver may continue to
read the battery level indicator.

So, if you have a non-iPhone 10, and you have already updated to iOS 11.2.6,
please let us know your experience as I do not plan to update until I can
confirm that this battery bug does not apply to VoiceOver users.

Please be sure to include which iPhone you are using.

Thank you,

Mark

What is everyone's favorite GPS app they use specifically in conjunction

Re: Home Pod portability?

2018-02-23 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello Mark,

Not taken the plunge yet in buying a Homepod, but following the discussion with
interest.

Currently at home I am using a rather old but trusty NAD 20-30 amplifier with
Heybrook 5 speakers.

Not sure whether Homepod is the way forward but I regularly visit friend’s
houses where their music systems leave a lot to be desired.

Was wondering how suitable a Homepod would be to being used in a situation
where it would be used in multiple homes or a better solution may be found.

2018-02-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Malcolm,

I have not yet, nor do I plan on, taking my HomePod to someone else's house
(smile).

However, my best guess is that as long as your HomePod's associated iOS device
has access to a WiFi network, unless you set up restrictions from within the
Home app, all devices on that same network can send sound to HomePod.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

If I visit a friend’s house provided my iPhone had previously joined their

If I was to take my Home Pod to that same friend’s house would it connect too

RE: How do you move ahead on Voice Dream Reader

2018-02-23 Thread Richard Turner
Voice Dream Reader is a book, document, MP3 book, app for listening/reading.
It is the best app for those with a Bookshare subscription.

But, it will read DAISY books that are not DRM protected, ePub, plain text,
html, word, PDf, and play audio files.

I believe you can read all about it at:
www.voicedream.com
Or, of course, you can also read its summary in the iTunes app store.
It is $14.99, which also buys you one higher quality voice, but it also works
with all the iOS voices.

HTH,
Richard

When I am reading a book from Bookshare on VDR how do you get through all the

Can someone explain to me how to use the navigation button. I always have a

Home Pod portability?

2018-02-23 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello,

To those of you who already own a Home Pod I would welcome your thoughts on the
following question.

If I visit a friend’s house provided my iPhone had previously joined their
wireless network my Apple Watch will connect to that network perfectly happily.

If I was to take my Home Pod to that same friend’s house would it connect too
or is it restricted to my home network? So how portable is the Home Pod in
this respect.

Thanks.

Re: How do you move ahead on Voice Dream Reader

2018-02-23 Thread Richard Turner
Hi,
The quickest way to get to the beginning of the book, find the button called,
Headings, Bookmarks, and Highlights which is on the left edge even with the
play button and double tap.
The default is headings. The headings will be a list on the screen. The
Notice will be the one highlighted if you have not started the book.
Find the one you want and double tap and reading will start.

While reading, if you want to move ahead or back, the Navigation Unit pick list
to the right of the play button has lots of choices. Flick up or down on it to
change what happens if you touch the play button and then flick up or down with
one finger.

HTH,
Richard

something else so you can be sure you're hearing all of the announcements?
Using headphones on the road seems somewhat unsafe.

Thank you,

I have an iPhone 7 Plus and have updated to the latest iOS. I did not find any
problems with the battery indicator‘s however, our use voiceover, so if it’s
missing in a print version I don’t know. Sometimes voiceover reads things that

Hi all:
I have an iPhone 7 Plus and have updated to the latest iOS. I did not find any
problems with the battery indicator‘s however, our use voiceover, so if it’s
missing in a print version I don’t know. Sometimes voiceover reads things that
others don’t see on the screen. So far everything is behaving as it did before.
Hope that helps.

My iPhone SE also works fine on 11.2.6.
Battery indicator is the same as always.
My iPod Touch is on the beta, so it doesn't count.
It doesn't have an issue either.

I have seen this mentioned on my VR Trek as one of the forms of feedback

Subject: HomePod, iPhone, and Apple Watch, An Addicting Scenario I Can
Definitely Live With

Hello All,

Okay, I've had my HomePod for a few days now and I am totally addicted to
the following scenario:

SETUP:
1.
Have "Hay Siri" disabled on iPhone 8 Plus.

2.
Have "Hay Siri" enabled on HomePod.

3.
Have Apple Watch set to silent mode, providing hap tic feedback, only, on
incoming text messages.

SCENARIO:
1.
Sitting in office, working on various projects.

2.
Receive hap tic feedback on wrist, via Apple Watch, notifying me of a new
SMS or iMessage.

3.
Say, "Hay Siri, read message."

4.
Siri identifies the sender, and then reads the contents of the message, at
the conclusion of which she asks if I wish to reply."

5.
I reply, "Yes."

6.
She then asks me to dictate the reply, at the end of which she then reads
the reply back to me.

7.
She then asks, "Would you like to send it?"

8.
I answer, "Yes."

9.,
The message is sent with virtually no disruption in my work flow.

This is a beautiful scenario that plays out time-and-time again,
throughout

my day.

Now I know that one can enable "Hay Siri", in iOS resulting in the
potential

for the same scenario but, to me, using HomePod makes far more sense as I
don't like the power drain of 'Hay Siri" on my iOS devices when I forget
to

disable "Hay Siri" upon removing them from the A/C charger.

HomePod, iPhone, and Apple Watch, an addicting scenario I can definitely
live with, (smile).

Mark

Re: An F.Y.I. Regarding Apple Music Radio

2018-02-23 Thread Wayne Merritt
One thing I really love about Apple Music is whether I'm llistening to
a curated playlist, a radio station from Apple, or just browsing
through the millions of songs in various albums, if a song is playing
I can add it to my library or one of my own playlists in a few taps.
I've occasionally thought of switching from Apple Music to another
service, but if I did, I wouldn't find this ability to easily add
songs to my playlists on my iOS device. It even works if you're
listening to Beats 1, the main station from Apple, or one of their
on-demand shows. I do wish there were a button to return to the
original start screen, such as the For You tab, instead of constantly
hitting back. It is easy to browse through artists and albums and get
rather deep in the system.

Re: Only in iCloud?

2018-02-23 Thread Kimber Gardner
I'm not an expert with using Pages by any measure, but a brief
exploration of the app shows a "locations" button where you can
indicate whether you want your documents saved locally to your device
or to the cloud. I think if you save locally you will have to back up
to the cloud to have the docs saved there, but you should have access
to the local content when you want it if you handle it that way.

I take my iPad Air to various classes and I have lots of handouts in Pages, in
Notes and as pdfs in iBooks. When offline, I cannot access the Pages
documents, though Notes and the pdfs in iBooks do seem available. Is there any
way to choose to have Pages documents available offline (just as we can have
