RE: Pinch Gesture On Apple Watch Ultra 2

2024-05-06 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

I’ve played with my watch trying to get the pinch gesture to work since my
original post. I’ve played with several arm and hand positions such as keeping
my arm parallel and perpendicular to the floor, using my wrist at various
angles, trying to use different finger combinations and using different parts
of the fingers being used to perform the pinch gesture. I’m finally able to
get the gesture to work about 80 to 85 percent of the time. I use my index
finger and thumb to form the letter “O” and then tap the very tips of those
fingers to perform the pinch gesture. As I said , this works most of the
time. Anyone with longer fingernails may have some trouble tapping the tips of
their fingers together. I hope I’m explaining myself clearly but, if not ,
please reply to this post and I’ll try to do a better job. Thank you.

Take care,

Ed Przybylek

Opening Attached Photo In Email App

2024-04-03 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

I received an email with an attached photo. I'd like to know how to select
the attached photo and then open the photo in an app that can work with the
photo. Specifically, I'd like to open the attached photo in ChatGPT. I've
done this in the past but the steps seem to have changed and I'm having
trouble doing it again. I would greatly appreciate help with this problem.
I called Apple tech support and, after going around in circles for a while,
the tech simply admitted they weren't sure how to do it. Again, any help is
greatly appreciated.

Text Message Notification Volume

Hi all,

Before iOS 17, I was using a text notification tone that I could hear
throughout my home. That text tone is no longer available in the new list
of text tones. The bigger problem, however, is that none of the new tones
are anywhere near as loud as the older tones. Is there a way of increasing
the volume of a text tone without affecting all the other volume levels on
my phone? As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

VoiceOver And Assistive Touch

Uber App Problem

2023-09-11 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

For a while now, I've had a couple of problems using the Uber app. Two
items have been popping up on the screen and I can't find a way to get rid
of them. The first is an advertisement asking me to try local favorits and
then displays a list of items that are available. The second is a message
asking if the name or address is correct given my location. This is
followed by four buttons labeled Yes, No, I Don't Know followed by a Done
button which is dimmed. Tapping any of the three buttons does nothing so
the Done button remains dimmed and can't be used. The problem with these
boxes is that they cover up a great deal of the information I need about my
ride such as how many minutes until my car will arrive, the color of the
car, the driver's name and so on. If anyone has any ideas of how to get rid
of these boxes, I would greatly appreciate your passing them on. Thank you.
Stay well.

Take care,

Ed Przybylek

Hi Debby,

I tried what you suggested and it worked beautifully. I joined a meeting and
got to the point where I began having audio issues. Video was already working
just fine. As you suggested, I tapped WIFI/cellular and audio came on
immediately. I then looked around in settings and made the setting permanent.
Go to Settings > Meetings > Auto Connect Audio and select "Wifi or Cellular.
So far, things are working well again. Thank you. Stay well.

Edward, I've recently experienced your problem which proved a total
embarrassment since one of the requirements of my meeting was familiarity with
Zoom which I had used several times but not for several months. I suspect some
updates changed basic settings one of which was to turn off certain items by
default which were enabled in previous versions.

I think I've been able to fix the problem but when I tried to use the basic
test from Zoom, I was asked for an access code which of course I didn't have. I
actually registered with Zoom and they sent me an invitation to test their
service, with no code of any kind included.

Anyway, here's what I did in hopes of fixing my problem for a zoom meeting
tomorrow. I've sending this to the list in cawe others have a solution or
experienced the same issues with Zoom.

1 Open zoom and activate the tab at the bottom labelled as "more," it will say
selected when double tapped.

2 Move below "settings." You might have to swipe around a bit to locate the
settings.

3. Double tap "meetings."

4 Double tap "mute my microphone" and be sure that is set to off.

I have never had to play around in the Zoom settings before. Prior to my most
recent effort, Everything just worked when activating the provided link in my
invitation emails.

I make this noise by rubbing my hind legs together.

Hi Debby & Doug,

Thanks for getting back to me. I really appreciate your help and suggestions.
Doug, would you please tell me how you got the information about how to run a
fake session with Zoom. Getting some practice with the app would be very
useful. Again, thanks. Stay well.

Hi,

I get that message all of the time. I don’t have a current meeting to look at
for the exact wording, but what I do is to flick up from that message and just
above it I find something like “use wifi or cellular data.” I double tap on
that, and my audio is available. I don’t quite understand it, but it works.

I hope that helps!

Hi Richard,

I'm currently using Samantha as my default voice. I have numerous voices that
I downloaded, tried and then moved on to another voice until I found the one I
liked the most. I didn't delete any of the voices I downloaded so as to
prevent having to download them again in case I wanted to try another voice.
I've tried to figure out which voice is causing the problem but no joy so far.
It sounds like a very garbled female voice. I'll keep looking but I'd
appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thanks. Stay well.

RE: Amazon Alexa App Problem

2021-06-24 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

The first things I tried were shutting down and restarting my iPhone and then I
tried resetting the phone. None of this made a difference. Last night, I
spent a lot of time doing some research on the Internet and trying a number of
solutions that people suggested. I finally found a post that recommended
turning off and then turning on airplane mode. I didn't hold out much hope for
this solution but I was getting a bit desperate. I have numerous Amazon
devices around the house and I didn't want to lose all the information about
these devices stored in the Alexa app. Surprisingly, turning off and then
turning on airplane mode solved the problem. I don't know what airplane mode
has to do with the Alexa app but I'm glad to have things working again. Thanks.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

I had the exact same thing happen to me on two of my phones yesterday after
updating the Amazon Shopping app. Uninstalling the app, then doing a reboot,
and then installing the app again solved the problem. And yes, I did have to
sign back into the app as well as fix its notification settings.

Amazon Alexa App Problem

2021-06-23 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

Tonight I tried to open the Amazon Alexa app to opt out of the Amazon
Sidewalk feature. I double tapped the app on my home page after which there
was a delay and I was returned back to the home page with focus still on the
Amazon Alexa app. I opened the app switcher and found the app listed there.
Double tapping the app, however, simply returned me to the home page with
focus still on the app. I then tried the same exercise on my iPod Touch 7
with the exact same results. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If
so, were you able to find a solution? As always, any help is greatly
appreciated. Stay healthy.

I suspect you are running into the IOS 14 change in which the Phone app default
was set to display just one line on the top or bottom of the screen. This was
probably a productivity type change intended to allow a sighted user to
continue to see whatever app they were using when the call comes in. They can
deal with the call by tapping that one line notification for the call.

We can do this with Voiceover also but it is somewhat awkward. A more useful
alternative is to alter the default setting for the Phone app.

If this is your situation, you can reset the Phone app to its former behaviour
where it will use a full screen for the call information. This should give you
back your number pad when the call comes in. You can do this in:

Settings / phone / Incoming calls

Double tap this button and choose the full screen option.

I hope this helps.

Keypad After Receiving A Call

2021-04-23 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

In the past, my phone would display the telephone keypad whenever I received
a call. Lately, however, the keypad is no longer displayed when I receive
calls. I really don't know when this began happening. It's a real problem
whenever I get a call that requires a numeric response such as confirming a
doctor's appointment etc. I've looked all through settings but I can't find
anything that would let me display the keypad during a call. Does anyone
know how or if I can return things back to the way they were? If not, how
are others handling this situation? As always, any help is greatly
appreciated. Stay well.

Take care,

Ed Przybylek

RE: Missing Song

2021-03-26 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hey Richard,

The song at the YouTube link you provided is the song I lost but the recording
I owned is not a live recording. I’ll look around the Internet and try to find
another copy of the song. And, as you suggest, I’ll store it somewhere on my
computer as well as putting it into my iTunes library. Thank you and stay well.

Take care,

Hi Malcom,

I use GoldWave for my basic tagging needs and it is pretty easy.

You have to do that one file at a time, so in that sense, it can be a nightmare
if you have lots to do at one time.

I have found that Apple sometimes pulls CD data from a database with absolutely
stupid information and so after getting all my CD’s from 30 plus years of
collecting them imported and fixed in itunes, I only buy albums from Apple as
downloads.

The database they use is particularly bad for audio books on CD.

It isn’t their fault since they pull from some generic resource, but I had an
audio book that was about 20 CD’s in length and I think only the first CD was
tagged correctly.

That was a true nightmare that I ended up resolving by just buying it from
audible, so it was one file well marked up, grin.

.

Hello Richard,

Like you I have transferred music from a variety of sources to my iPhone. I do
have an Apple Music subscription and from my experience it makes no difference.
I have never had a track deleted for me.

MP3 tagging is a nightmare though as I am sure you will agree.

I do not have an Apple Music subscription though, if that matters.

The thing you will want to do is to make sure the song is tagged correctly,
which it probably is if you are getting it from another service where you buy
it.

Just to be safe, I would keep that file somewhere else than in your iTunes
library as a back up to be certain it isn’t going to vanish.

BTW, was the YouTube link I sent you the correct song?

I’d not heard of that artist before and am interested.

Hi all,

A few years ago I purchased a song using the iTunes app. The song disappeared
from my iPhone several months after that. I tried to redownload the song but
no joy. The song no longer appears in a search with iTunes. Apple
accessibility support tried to find the song but to no avail. They suggested
looking at hidden songs and see if it got dumped there. Support said they
can’t help with looking to see if the song was put in the hidden songs list
because that has to be done on a computer. I tried to do that but I didn’t get
very far. I find the screens for finding hidden items to be difficult to use.
If anyone has some steps I can use to look through the hidden items screens or
any other suggestions I’d be grateful if you could pass them along. Thanks.
Stay well.

RE: Has anyone used Uber lately?

2020-10-20 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi,

When I use the Uber app and get to the page that has the confirm and ride
button, I set focus to the dimmed confirm and ride button, flick left twice to
the line that states I'm wearing a mask and double tap it. This enables the
ride and confirm button which can then be double tapped to complete the ride
order. Hope this helps.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

Yes I have had trouble confirming a ride. I can’t activate that button with

Apple Watch Case

2020-10-06 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

I'm trying to find a protective case for my Apple watch. I would like a
bumper case and a glass screen protector that will fit the case. It can be
two separate items or a case with a glass screen protector built right in.
A final requirement is that the case can be used with watch bands made for
the Apple watch and not a case with it's own proprietary band. Any
recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Take care,

Ed Przybylek

RE: I Figured Out How to Answer Calls on Apple Watch

2020-10-01 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi Shirley,

I finally got through to Apple accessibility support and they told me this is a
known problem. They were able to reproduce the problem on three different
watches. Their work-around for the problem is exactly the same as the one you
discovered. Thank you.

Take care,

Someone was asking how to answer calls on their apple watch since updating. I
too tried the magic tap and it didn't work, so I covered to mute, flicked right
and it said answer call and I double tapped with one finger and that worked.
You can also hear who the call is from which in past updates I never was able
to know who the calls were from. Hope this helps whoever was asking this
question.

RE: BARD Books And The iOS Files App

2020-08-11 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

There seems to be some confusion about the adapters we’re talking about. There
are two adapters that connect to a lightning port. One adapter simply has a
single slot for use with an SD card. The other adapter has a standard USB port
to which you can connect flash drives, external USB drives, etc. Such devices
have a much higher power requirement so, as well as the USB port, it has a port
for a lightning cable which is connected to a power source. I suppose you
could pug a USB flash card reader into the USB port and then be able to read a
variety of flash cards. I don’t know if you would need an external power
source to do this but someone should give it a try and let us know the results.
 Stay healthy all of you.

Take care,

Ed Przybylek

cable with lightning connecter to transfer files from an SD card?
I currently have a USB adapter hub/memory card reader that has 3 different
memory card slots and 3 USB ports and it includes an SD card slot.

Best,
Priscilla

There isn't one especially if you're still using the first gen stream.
Another option for listening to bard books is always the NLS player
which I'm assuming you have. The bard mobile app is also great.

In case this hasn't been mentioned, you probably could try to download to

To use the adapter you have to be plugged into power, so if you were
thinking there might be a way for doing this on the road, or whatever, there
isn't.

Stick to the computer or just listen on the BARD app.

Voice Dream reader will not read braille files as far as I know. You need a
braille display for that.

You can turn it off from the keyboard, but since the gesture to turn it back on
is a VoiceOver command, you cannot turn it back on.

Control+options+h three times quickly will work to turn it off if triple click
the home button is set as the accessibility shortcut.

You would then have to use Siri to turn it back on or manually triple click the
home button.

Hi Holly,

Who is the developer of Halide? I searched for the app in the app store and
found the app. There is no mention of triggering the phone shutter with a
shortcut and your voice. Thank you.

Hi all,

Thanks for getting back to me. I’ll have to checkout the podcast at AppleVis.
My understanding is that the scanner app has a method of helping you make sure
the entire document is in the frame. I’d like to know how to use this feature.
 Thanks.

Hi Sieghard,

Thanks for the link. The various pages have the information I need. I’m going

found a number of PDF manuals but they’re not for V4 of the Apple-TV. Again,
thanks.

A Google search for “accessible Apple TV user guide” gave me the following link
as the first search result:

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/accessibility/tv

Once the page loads and if you don’t want to read any of what’s there, just
pull up all the links with Jaws Key+F7 (if you use Jaws that is) and look for
the link “See the Apple TV User Guide”.

Hi all,

I just purchased a latest version 64 bit Apple-TV. Does anyone know where I
might obtain an accessible copy of the manual for the unit? Thank you.

Heart Rate Monitor

2016-11-20 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

I'm looking for a heart rate monitor and app that I can use with my iPhone.
I need it to continuously monitor my heart rate and display a value on my
iPhone. I would also like it to generate a sound with each heartbeat.
Essentially, the kind of thing you would find in a hospital room. Please
let me know if you know of such an item. Thank you.

Take care,

Ed Przybylek

Turning Off Alarm Clock

2016-07-26 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

I've just begun using the clock app as my morning alarm clock. When an
alarm goes off, I flick around the screen until I find the OK button and
then do a double tap to turn off the alarm. Is there an easier way to turn
off an alarm? Thanks.

Red Laser Problem

2016-01-26 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

Lately, Red Laser is not returning the same information it used to.
Previously, it returned the name of the item being scanned as well as a
variety of information about the product. Now, however, after scanning an
item, it simply returns a number and nothing else. I've looked at settings
in the app and iOS settings but nothing looks like it would solve the
problem. If anyone has some suggestions for a fix, I'd appreciate hearing
from you. Thanks.

Take care,

RE: Wireless blood pressure monitors from Apple store

2015-03-30 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi Ed,

The web site claims the cuff size is 8.7 to 14.6 inches. You could always give
them a call and see if they have anything else. The meter runs on 4 tripple A
batteries. The unit doesn’t read your blood pressure out loud. You have to
read it on your iDevice with VoiceOver. Good luck.

Hi Ed,
I take it you are saying that this app is accessible in that it reads the BP
reading to you? The other question I have is it battery operated or electric? I
have to use a large cuff to go around my arm so is the cuff fairly large on
this unit?

Thanks in advance for answering my question and any other suggestion you may

Hi,

I’ve been using the QardioArm wireless blood pressure monitor for a couple of
months now. The iOS app is fully accessible except for two pickers in the
settings menu. One picker specifies the number of times to sequentially take a
blood pressure reading and the other picker specifies the time interval between
readings. I was able to set the values myself but it took a bit of effort. If
you’re a more advanced VoiceOver user, you should be able to set these values
on your own. If not, you’ll need some sighted assistance. Since the values
only need to be set once, I don’t see this as a real problem. When I wrote to
the company about the picker problem, they thanked me for contacting them and
said they would address the problem in future software releases. The accuracy
of the readings from the QardioArm is almost identicle to the readings I get
from a fairly expensive Omron unit I own and the readings I get at my doctor’s
office. I owned the iHealth wireless blood pressure monitor before the
QardioArm monitor but I returned it after two weeks. The initial unit set-up

RE: Text Fields Causing Serious Performance Problems

2014-07-25 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi Cheryl,

The soft reset I’m referring to is holding down the power and the home buttons
together. We haven’t tried a backup followed by a factory reset because she
doesn’t know how to use iTunes and has never configured her phone for automatic
backups. We don’t live close to each other so meeting at one of our homes and
going through the backup/restore process together isn’t an option. If it comes
down to that being the only option, then we’ll figure it out.

It's not clear to me what you mean for sure by a soft reset vs. a hard reset.
You can turn the phone back off and on again; you can reset the phone by
holding the power button and the home button so it reboots, or you can do a
restore. None of those are so difficult or time-consuming that you should avoid
them if she is having this kind of problem. I suppose it's possible that
letting your battery die completely could cause this, though I've had this
happen a few times without negative consequences. I suppose how long she had to
wait to charge it might be a factor but I don't even know for sure if this is
true.

She thinks the problem started about the time her battery died completely when
she was working with her iPhone. She charged the device and she thinks that’s
when her iPhone began to misbehave. Overall, her iPhone works as expected.
The problem arises when she navigates into a text field and puts it into edit
mode or navigates into a text field that is already in edit mode. Her iPhone
immediately becomes extremely sluggish. Characters entered from a Bluetooth
keyboard or from the onscreen keyboard sometimes take as long as 5 or 6 seconds
from the time they are entered to the time they show up in the text field.
Trying to navigate from the text field with a left or right flick or using the
left or right arrow keys on the keyboard also takes several seconds or
sometimes does not work at all. Flicking up or down to review the text field
contents by character or word works once or twice and then begins to work very
slowly and eventually does not work at all. Attempting to change the rotor
setting does nothing, works extremely slowly or, in many cases, simply locks up
the iPhone. We removed all items from the App Switcher, powered down the
iPhone, did a soft reset, removed as many items as possible from the Rotor,
removed all devices from the list of paired Bluetooth devices, and numerous
other small possible fixes. Absolutely nothing helped. As far as I’m
concerned, the only thing left to do is a hard reset. I’m hoping to avoid this
so I’m writing to the list to see if anyone might have some ideas we haven’t
tried. As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

I am actually having a similar problem, and mine did not seem to start

It's not clear to me what you mean for sure by a soft reset vs. a hard
reset. You can turn the phone back off and on again; you can reset the phone
by holding the power button and the home button so it reboots, or you can do
a restore. None of those are so difficult or time-consuming that you should
avoid them if she is having this kind of problem. I suppose it's possible
that letting your battery die completely could cause this, though I've had
this happen a few times without negative consequences. I suppose how long
she had to wait to charge it might be a factor but I don't even know for
 sure if this is true.

Hello,

I probably should have put more info on this product in my original post.

1.
DiskAid is for use on both Windows and Mac.

2.
DiskAid is an iOS device management system. Consequently, one must install
and open the application on either a Mac or Windows Desktop computer; just
like iTunes on the Desktop.

3.
When the app is open, simply attach the iOS device in order to have it
detected by the application.

4.
Like many popular applications, DiskAid is both purchased and downloaded
from the developer website. The URL for the DiskAid Store is:
http://www.digidna.net/store

5.
The single user license cost approximately 30 USD.

Sorry for any confusion.

Mark

DiskAid 6.7 with App Management iOS 8 Support

 DiskAid 6.7: App Backups!
Safely rescue space on your iOS device with the new DiskAid 6.7 This
week's release of DiskAid 6.7 adds one of the most requested features:
the ability to backup individual iOS apps and their custom data and
settings to your Mac or PC!
Why is this kind of app management so cool? Because it means you can
finally delete apps you don't use frequently without that dreaded
decision of whether to lose your associated files and saved state.

For gamers, this is especially welcoming since it means valuable
gigabytes can be reclaimed without sacrificing the hours that have
been invested earning achievements and progressing through a game.

But really it's great for anyone who has ever thought they might need
an app again that they no longer use. With DiskAid 6.7, you can save
the app and its associated data as a single .ipa file, and restore it
to your device as it was before just as easily.

DiskAid 6.7 also adds a powerful new device cloning feature that
allows you to make an exact copy of one iOS device to another-no need
for clumsy iTunes backups and restores!

 iOS 8 OS X 10.10

Last Monday at WWDC Apple previewed iOS 8 and we immediately went to
work testing its compatibility with DiskAid 6.7.

After only 5 days we are pretty happy to release DiskAid 6.7.1
 already supporting iOS 8!

We have also been testing DiskAid 6.7 on the beta version of OS X
10.10 Yosemite, also due out in October, and so far haven't yet
 encountered any problems.

 AltConf 2014 Apple's WWDC

DiskAid is super proud to be the Gold Sponsor of AltConf 2014, the
free alternative to Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC)
that took place this week in San Francisco.

AltConf has being held at the Children's Creativity Museum right
across the street from WWDC and included a ton of interesting
sessions and panels. You can watch all replays on AltConf's Youtube
Channel.

Calendar Items Got Lost In Upgrade From iOS 5 to 6

2014-05-07 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

VO Volume Stops At 65%

2014-03-10 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

A few days ago, I ran into the 35% VO volume bug on my iPhone 5S. I did a
reset of my settings after which I went through my various settings and set
them back to their values from before the settings reset. Everything worked
well after the reset. I was able to set my VO volume as high as 90%. Last
night I was listening to TuneIn Radio Pro and I made some volume adjustments
using the on-screen volume control. I tried to adjust the VO volume
relative to the radio volume but was unable to do so. The volume setting on
the rotor would not let me set the VO volume above 65%. Does anyone know
what might be going on and possibly suggest a solution? I really don't want
to go through the whole settings reset process again just to get things back
to normal again. Thanks.

It looks like VO is reading the highlights differently from the standard
text. For the sighted, this makes it easier to tell which text has been
changed, and which text iOS is unsure was translated correctly when using
speech recognition. Either, VO ignores the highlighting, and we do not know
which words iOS is unsure of and what changes have been made, or VO has
pauses / changes so we know which changes have been made and which words iOS
is unsure of, but we get broken speech. I figured this out a couple weeks

differently.

Subject: where will you purchase the iPhone 5s

Hi all. Just curious about what different people will do when it comes
time to purchasing the iPhone 5s. Oh, and before I go on, just a point
to note, the s in the name 5s is lower-case because if it's a capital S
it looks too much like the number 5 visually, so Apple made it a small s
on purpose. So, the correct way of writing it is iPhone 5s. Anyway,
since you cannot pre-order the 5s, will you go to your local phone
carrier store, or to the Apple store? I'm just curious as to whether
people will go this Friday and wait long lines like Black Friday in the
US, or if they will wait a few days until the lines get less.

I'm pretty excited myself because this will be my first time getting a
new phone the day it comes out. In the past I've gotten it when it was
an afterthought, or in the case of the 4s, when it had been out for
about 4 months already. usually I wait in case there are initial
problems found with the first batch of hardware, but this time around
I'm diving in with my eyes closed as the saying goes.

Although all members are welcome to respond, I'm hoping that only people
who are getting the 5s will respond to this thread since I'm not asking
about whether it's a good idea, or if the 4s is better, or if we should
stay with what we have. This is because there are other viphone threads
which have already covered this.

Cheers.

iTunes syncing question

2013-09-05 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

I created a book in iTunes that consists of 30 individual mp3 files. I'm
currently trying to move the book from my iTunes library to my iPhone. I
listened to a podcast about syncing in iTunes that outlined the steps in
detail. I followed the steps exactly but, when I press the apply button to
start the sync, I get the following message in a dialog box:

The iPhone My iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to
erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced
with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the
contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library.

I don't want to erase the contents of my iPhone but I'm not sure what to do.
How do I find out the name of the library with which my iPhone is synced and
how do I change it to another library without damaging my current iPhone
contents? Can anyone recommend a manual that goes into detail on using
iTunes? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

Subject: Re: Some Items Lost During A Backup/Restore

Hi Ed,

Sieghard has already explained some of the distinctions of what gets saved
in a backup. I'll just state that as far as saving specific working
versions of apps, you have to keep a copy of that app's file on your
computer, either by transferring a version of the app into ITunes while that
particular app or version is still available in the App Store (e.g., by
buying the app through iTunes on your computer, or by having previously
set your iTunes preferences so that app purchases automatically download to
your computer.). If the only of an app like Bluetooth X exists as file on
your iPhone or other iOS device, and you made the purchase from that device,
and the app Is no longer in the App Store due to being removed by Apple for
violating their guidelines, then you have to get a copy of that app saved
onto your computer.

In general, you'd do this by connecting your iPhone to your computer and
using the Transfer Purchases option, which copies any app, music, movie,
or book purchase files on your device that are not on your computer into
your iTunes library. This will also replace any old versions of apps with
the latest copy available on your device, and move the older versions to the
Trash. If you want to keep a specific version, savea copy to another
location, or make sure to get the copy that might have been moved into the
Trash.

I'm not sure where the Transfer Purchases option will be located for you
in iTunes, since I'm on a Mac, and have refused to update to iTunes 11.
Under iTunes 10, this option to transfer purchases automatically came up
when you do a sync. If you show the sidebar in iTunes 11 (Coomand+Option+S
on a Mac, or Control+S in Windows to toggle sidebar between show and hide),
you can select your attached iPhone or other device in the sidebar, and
bring up the Context menu(VO+Shift+M or Control+Click on a Mac, or
right-click mouse in Windows). Transfer Purchases from your device should
be one of the options. You should also be able to navigate to the File
menu on your iTunes menu bar , select Devices and choose the Transfer
Purchases option.

There are also some third party software options that will let you copy
individual apps from the connected device to your.iTunes library. I don't
know what works for Windows, since I think someone mentioned that a popular
Windows choice, iExplorer, is not accessible with JAWS or NVDA. However,
PhoneView for the Mac, and some other options are accessible with VoiceOver.
For more details, check my Mac-access list post in the Mail Archives:
• Re: can we save visual voice mails
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access%40mac-access.net/msg18416.html

Finally, I think you can still access previous purchases that are no longer
available in the App Store, but that were not removed for violating
guidelines, as Bluetooth X was (for using private Apple APIs to operate.) I
hope so, for all the people who bought InDaisy, that was expensive and which
is no longer available.

Other apps like Bluetooth X that were removed include its predecessor,
Bluetooth OnOff (appeared April 17, 2012, removed a week later). Bluetooth
X (May 9, 2012) was mentioned on list for those who missed the release of
Bluetooth OnOff. The only app with similar functionality I'm aware of is an
app named Blue Suite ($0.99) by Mirco Bettelini. You could try that one
out.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Sieghard,

I haven't reset my original iPhone yet so doing a sync to my computer with
iTunes is still a possibility. I've only used the most basic functions of
iTunes so I'm not really sure how to do a complete sync of my iPhone. Do
you know of a podcast or manual that would give a step by step description
of how to do the sync? Thanks a lot.

Hi Ed,

First of all, you can't install an app somebody else sends you, so even if
somebody had this app it would not work on your iPhone since all apps, paid
and free, are tied to your specific Apple Id.

I know this advice may come too late, but a backup is not the same as a
sync. Backing up your phone does not back up any music or really any content
for that matter. It backs up your settings which includes information about
which apps you had installed and what your home screen layout was. It will
also back up things like your Favorites, Text Messages and so on. I actually
like to use the encrypted backup option which requires you to set a password
and confirm the password before the backup starts. This backs up even more
settings such as WiFi passwords.

As for music, apps, documents etc. those you have to sync to your computer.
I assume you did not sync your apps? In the case of that Bluetooth app which
I assume is one of these apps which turn on or off Bluetooth with a single
tap that was lost because it's not on the app store any more so the only way
to preserve something like that is to sync your apps with iTunes in which
case a copy of the app is stored locally on your computer. This way you can
put apps back on your phone that are not even there any more.

Was the mmusic you lost bought from iTunes? If so you can redownload it. If
it was synced to your iPhone, then do you still have it on your computer?

Regards,
Sieghard

Some Items Lost During A Backup/Restore

2013-07-17 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

Because of some problems I was having with my iPhone 5, Verizon replaced it
with a new unit. I created a backup of my original iPhone with iTunes and
then restored the backup to the new iPhone. I noticed that a number of
items did not restore to the new iPhone. Some documents I created using
purchased apps got lost, some music did not make it and I lost an app
entirely. To create the backup, I simply went to file devices backup. I
then connected the new iPhone and selected file devices restore. Did I
miss something? Any help is greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, the app I lost
is called Bluetooth X. It's one of my favorite and most used apps. I tried
to find it on the app store but it's no longer there. If anyone can suggest
a similar app or has a copy of Bluetooth X they could send me, I would
greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

Hi all,

Thanks for all the good suggestions for simple games for my older student.
I'll be giving one or two of them a try at the end of the week.

Games For Older User

2013-04-28 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

I'm currently teaching an individual who is well into his seventies how to
use an iPad. The eventual goal is to move him to an iPhone. His wife asked
if there are any simple games he might play on the iPad that would help him
practice his gestures and continue to learn how to review an entire screen
by dragging his finger around it. If you can think of any such games, I
would greatly appreciate hearing about them. Thanks.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

iPhone 5/Plantronics Voyager Pro Plus Problem

2013-03-02 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi all,

I'm using a Plantronics Voyager Pro Plus with my iPhone 5. The problem I'm
having is that the headset seems to go into a sleep state when nothing is
sent to it for a number of seconds. When this happens, I have to drag my
finger around the display to get the headset working again. Usually, a bit
of what is sent to the headset is lost before the headset begins working
again. This is a real problem when I'm using navigation software such as
Navigon or Motion X GPS Drive. When the software issues a turn command, a
good portion of the command is lost before the headset speaks the command.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior and, if so, were you able to
correct it? Do you think the headset is damaged and needs to be replaced?
Thanks.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

RE: iPhone 5/Plantronics Voyager Pro Plus Problem

2013-03-02 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi David,

Thanks for the information. The white noise idea sounds like a good
solution. Typically, when I use my headset, it's for 2 to 4 hours at a
time. I would think the headset batteries would last that long even with
the white noise playing in the bakground. If not, then I'll have to start
thinking about a hardwire solution. Maybe it's time to take a look at the
Aftershockz headphones. Thanks.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

This is normal behaviour, and how Bluetooth earpieces can last more than a
few hours on a charge. You need to have the iPhone send a continuous signal
to the earpiece in order to keep the channel open. Try playing a quiet sound
track in the music player. You can find white noise MP3 tracks on the
internet. This will provide a quiet hiss sound which the announcement will
play over. Be aware that this strategy will greatly reduce the time that the
earpiece will last between charging.

Yep, that's what it does now. In IOS 6 it has stopped retaining focus
information when going back to a previous screen. It only started to
be able to retain this information a few IOS versions ago, I don't
remember which one, but its current behavior has reverted to before
that was enhanced. Probably the best way is to touch somewhere on the
screen that might be close to where you want to be and then explore
for the correct spot or swipe to it from there. No configuration
options are going to put back what you are missing right now.

 Hi all,

I don't recall if this has been discussed but I'm having focus problems
 with
VoiceOver using iOS6. I searched the archives for information but without
any luck. Whenever I move from one screen to another and then back to the
original page, focus is returned to the top of the screen. An example of
this is writing a message and selecting to add an address from the
contacts
list. When returning from the contacts list, focus is moved to the top of
the message screen. This is time consuming and annoying. Is this a
 problem
with iOS6? Have I set some values incorrectly in settings? Any help is
 greatly appreciated.
