Re: Please help, can't figure out how to use the rotor on Iphone
Simple way to do the rotor. I put two fingers with a space between them on the screen. Then I turn the iPhone under my two fingers. After a while doing it this way, I began feeling the movement and now I can do a little of the movement with the phone still. I still need to move the phone, but I understand the gesture. Reggie and Brooks On Nov 5, 2012, at 4:12 PM, Rob Harris bobs...@googlemail.com wrote: I don't think i'd have trouble demonstrating as such, though this is going to depend mostly on the comprehension of the trainee. But you do the gesture on the back of their hand, while it is more or less in situ with the iDevice, then they try and emulate what they feel you do. You could step them through quite a lot as you do a gesture relative to what was heard from VO and the trainee mirrors what you did;and then you get to pause and see if they make the right gesture and reproduce again as necessary and so on. Getting into the right angle to use right hand on right hand for example could be a bit tricky, but this method sounds as plausible as any. Trainer would need a light touch so as to not hamper the trainees movements, but we tend to have a knack of following the movements of a guide lightly so they're not sure you're still there. This way if people want to chime in, they will have a better chance of seeing this thread. Also, it's usually better to post one message per question. Yes, that's more list traffic, but it keeps threads separate. Now as to your questions. Read below. 1. Many people have gotten rid of a home phone line because of cell phone access. This is regardless of whether it's an iPhone or not. What I personally would recommend is buy a $40 ObiTech phone bridge. This is similar to the phone box you use with Vonage right now. However this is a universal one. It works with all voip providers, or if not all of them, it's a whole bunch of them. You can get a free Google Voice number and have it ring both your ObiTech box at home, and your cell phone at the same time. So, no need to forward calls, etc. 2. It's hard to answer which is better because in the end it depends on coverage, which area you are in, and how you feel in a particular day. I use ATT, but if I have a bad customer experience, I might write that they suck, and to go with Verizon. I will say this though, really when it comes down to it, whether you get VZ, ATT, or Sprint, your experiences are going to be similar in regards to the iPhone itself. It will just be a matter of billing, coverage where you live, and customer service in how you are treated. Good luck. -- Raul A. Gallegos As you get older three things happen. I am asking this because I currently have vonage for a home phone and I also have my cell phone witch is my I Phone. So I am asking because maybe I could get by with just using my I Phone for all of my phone needs or. Keep my vonage or get something like the Verizon ho me connect and use that for a home phone. Now for my second question. 2. I know that this maybe mater of preference but. Both Verizon and A T and T have the I Phone. So witch one is better and has the better network? I am currently with Verizon but I have heard that they charge the most out of all the cell companies. And that A T and T have roll over minutes and there plans are a bit cheaper. Also now with the new I Phone 5 is the Verizon lte network that it is on faster then whatever network that A T and T has there IPhone 5 running on or about the same? Have you noticed?
Since I updated to six, I have been noticing that voice over has been somewhat sluggish. If I turn the phone off, and back on, I will clear up all the being sluggish. Also, Fleksy seems much more responsive. With the previous version, I was turning off my phone about once a week. Now I have to turn it off almost every day. What could or might be causing this? Bet it is just my phone. Smiley. Everyone is going to tell me is is not happening to them, I know. Smiles. Sending anyway just in case I am not alone? David, I have a 4S. That is why I am surprised. Just thought of something. I have had to turn off the phone only when totally on the Sprint 3G. At home I am on both network and wifi. Re: external battery, 7000
Thanks so much Sieghard! Hubby cannot see either, but as you said the battery causes the phone to chime and say charging so it is easy to tell. Had a friend look online, and he saw the pics and said the same as you. By the way, happy Thanksgiving Canadians, and know off topic but writing anyway! Smiles. Reggie and Brooks On Oct 6, 2012, at 2:41 AM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Regina, I think all of these external batteries basically work the same. The battery should have a regular USB plug in like you have on a computer or on your iPhone wall charger so any cable you can use to charge your phone from the computer or your wall charger will work fine. The battery works just as if you plug your phone in, it provides power to the phone just as your computer or wall charger does. If your phone is at 90% and you plug it into the battery it will charge it back to 100%, if it is at 2% it will do the same and if you totally run down the battery to the point where your phone shuts down automatically, it will take 2 or 3 or maybe even 4 minutes before it turns back on, but once again, this is the same as when you plug it into the wall charger. You will most likely find that the battery will not charge your phone as fast as the wall charger, but my laptop, for example, also takes longer to charge my iPhone and if you plug it into a laptop that is running on battery it’s basically no different than if it’s plugged into a dedicated external battery. As far as whether the battery is charging the phone or not you can easily see this when you check the status bar, if you are, for example, down to 15% and plug it into the battery, you ccan check the status bar battery indicator. If it says “15%, charging”, then obviously it is getting power from the phone. If it continues to just announce 15% and you don’t hear the sound it makes when you plug it in your battery is most likely dead. Make sure you ask your husband if your battery has an on/off switch and remember which position is on and which is off so you can be sure the battery is turned on. My techie friends need help with battery pack
I took someone's advice and went to at guys and bought the only external battery they had. It is a, all I can remember, seven thousand. I read the manual, and this is where I am. It came with two tips. The tiny one did not fit at all so I took the mini I think it is called, put it on my usb cable of my charger and put the other end in the wall as if I was charging my phone. I checked it in about an hour, and the charger in the wall was very warm. As I was afraid I had done something incorrectly or misunderstood the instructions I stopped and put it away. Does anyone have this external battery? I need to know both how to charge the battery and how to charge the phone from the battery, what tips to use and is it normal for the charger to get so hot. If you wish to contact off list, please feel free, but perhaps someone else could use information as the documentation for me was not enough. Thanks for any help in advance hope trying to do this without guideance did not ruin my battery. Reggie and Brooks -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Apparently she sends no matter what, but if you go back to the home screen you will hear it go. The whoosh must only be present when out of messages. Since I use fleksy for most texts I hear them. What I meant by rebooting the phone was when you ...
hold home and power button to power off. When you turn the phone back on voice over is gone and it even wipes out triple tap home. As far as Siri and texts, she will send them only if I say to send and then go immediately to my home screen when I hear the whoosh. Is I don't go to home screen I just see the message on the screen and hear no whoosh. Is also says on the screen her last words that she will send. I think the screen is freezing or locking right after I tell her to send. I have phone set to not let Siri do anything in a locked screen. Maybe I will change that setting and see if it helps, but it is easy enough for me to go to the home screen immediately or send from Fleksy. Re: Siri Generated Text Messages Bug Discovered in iOS 6.0
Siri just plain is having problems with texts. Have not tried texting in a locked screen, but if you are in Siri she will not send even on home screen. You have to get out of Siri. It may also work the first time you attempt to send a message after powering on the device. However, subsequent attempts with messages containing more than 5 words or so, will time out before the message can be sent. To create the bug, do the following: NOTE 2: I use the center button on the included iPHone wired headset to interact with Siri. 1. Launch Siri and say something like, Send a message to Mark Taylor. Siri will reply with something like, You said, send a message to Mark Taylor. OK. I can send a message to Mark Taylor for you. What would you like it to say? At this point, a text message dialog box is displayed and Siri will say something like, To, Mark Taylor. 2. Initiate the Siri command and say something like, Hi Mark. How is your day? I hope you are well. Siri will respond with something like, You said, Hi Mark. How is your day? I hope you are well. I updated your message. Ready to send it? Reply with cancel or send. Basically, whether in touch typing or standard mode, going to the row of characters below the numbers just gives me clicks. The only way I can produce these is from memory and then, once the key has been tapped and my finger has been removed, I can hear the result of what I've just typed. This also appears to be the cdase on the Emoji keyboard. Effectivfely this means that you cannot slide your finger around to find the punctuation/symbol you need to type. It seems we've found quite a number of bugs today. Perhaps some of us need to get together, compile the list and then send to Support together, to add numbers and weight to what we're saying. However, had to go back to American voice as the Australian voice was muffled like American compact voice. Am I still in contact voice in Australian.? Is is was bright like American, samantha? I would take the Australian voice. Have compact voice off and have turned phone off and on. Any help? Thanks. Re: brand new iphone user, need help
Candy, No this will not get the better of you!! I am 60 years old and like you had never held an Apple device. Big learning curve and much frustration later, I am using it and maintaining it fairly easily. Practice your gestures in setting/general/accessibility/practice and once familiar with them, play and keep playing. If you wish I can send you a great getting started document written by a friend. I also would encourage you to go to the new iPhone users forum running Tuesday by our own Beverly. I have the number and access code or she may post here. Of course you can ask here. Applevis.com is another great resource for podcasts on how to do's. I would also offer to talk if you wish. Email is reggie.alvar...@gmail.com hope this gives encouragement. Email deletion
I an not sure if this was the problem with email, so if I missed the point forgive, please. I opened email, moved to a post several posts down on the page, and deleted. It put me right back on the nest post. The problem comes is you open the thread and want to not read say the first four emails but want to read the fifth. You can open the fifth email, but if tie you then go back to the list of posts is does not focus on the post you just read. I really love the new mail! However, I tend to delete threads I will not understand so I can do that on the opening page. Reggie and Brooks -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Sluggish iPhone voice over
Hello all, Has anyone noticed in the last two days that voice over has become much more sluggish? Is this because of the new version coming this week? I see when I start the number or email that it will show it in a list, but from there I have tried everything I can think of, and it won't change positions. Thanks in advance. Did this email as you explained Sieghard.. Interested to see if it will put in the subject for me. Re: Fleksy
Kathy, When you want to put a new number or address in Fleksy's favorites, just make certain you are at the end of your last entry. What I do is place a comma right after the number or address when I add it. When I back to add another, I am in the correct place. I check this by deleting the comma I put in and then putting it back and spacing after it. Then I can put in my new entry. There is such ambiguity between phone manufactures, carriers and google that programmers are forced to alter their code for each version of the operating system they plan on supporting. HTC, Motorola, Samsung and god knows who else all alter the base code for their particular hardware. This means that no version of Ice cream sandwich is the same as what Google released. App developers don't like to work within these types of boundaries. It's much easier to write apps for IOS as no matter what version of the phone you own the base operating system is the same. As you know, we are committed to develop Fleksy and make it available for more and more users. One of the restrictions we've had so far, is that on iOS, Fleksy cannot replace your system keyboard across the device. We provide as much integration as possible, letting you email, SMS, tweet, and (soon) post to Facebook from within Fleksy. And you can copy and paste to any other app. We are trying to go beyond this: we could provide Fleksy as a keyboard across the device, so you can use it in every single app without the need to have a separate app, or to copy and paste. We've also noticed that Android is becoming more and more accessible for visually impaired users with each update. So, here's a question for the list: If there was a phone that was accessible, and that had Fleksy built in from the start. By built in, we mean that Fleksy could be used as a system keyboard on every app, and that Fleksy would come with the phone, i.e. without having to purchase the app separately. How likely would this be to make you consider buying such a device? Obviously we are talking about a hypothetical scenario, so for now let's assume all other features will be the same as your current device. Would the availability of Fleksy as a system typing mode to use in every app make you consider an accessible Android phone in your next upgrade? Looking forward to your thoughts on this. Fleksy again
Are you just using one index finger? If you are using both index fingers, how do you hold the phone? Tried with thumbs, but disaster! Could do it easily with the two index fingers though. Just cannot find a comfortable way to hold the phone so my index fingers are free to type. By the way, I could not get Fleksy to recognize words at first either. Now I have no trouble. May I suggest that perhaps the difficulty is that the movements of the finger or thumb are too wide. When I made my movements smaller, all of a sudden Fleksy understood me. When typing on an actual keyboard you have keys right under your fingers. Typing on a flat screen gave me the impression in my head I had a large area to work with, and it took practice and more practice to shorten the movements. Now most of the time I am very accurate. If you have already purchased the full version previously, you will automatically be upgraded to the full version. § You no longer have to switch VoiceOver off to type. Please note, you have to first tap once anywhere on the screen before typing, in order to activate the keyboard. This is the way Direct Touch works. § When you launch Fleksy, it is now already in typing mode. You can use the keyboard area to type. To bring up the Fleksy menu, press and hold at the top of the screen, above the keyboard area. § We have re-ordered the app menus based on popular feedback. § You can now remove words from the dictionary. You remove words the same way you add them: type them in manual entry mode, and then, after swiping right, swipe up to remove from the dictionary. § The previous version of Fleksy prevented you from adding certain words in the dictionary – this has now been fixed. § There is now an easy way to add apostrophes to nouns. After writing a word, swipe right for period and you will find the (apostrophe s) shortcut in the suggestions. § We have reorganized how Fleksy formats emails. The word “Fleksy” is not added to the subject line any more. We have also included an option for using the first line of your text as the subject of outgoing e-mails. We know that a lot of participants of this forum had asked for this feature. § Fleksy now supports the Screen Curtain feature when enabled. § Fleksy now speaks in the same language locale as your iPhone if you use the UK or Australian English voice. § Your user dictionary is now stored in iCloud on enabled devices. This means it will automatically be updated across your devices and stay in sync. § The instructions are now stored within Fleksy, so you can access them when you are offline or outside a network cover area. § There is now a “spell words” setting. This spells the last word entered after you have typed it. § We have updated the Twitter button to point to our new Twitter handle: @fleksy. § We have added the underscore to the list of symbols. § And, finally, Fleksy now notifies you it is ready when loading is completed. The update is free for all Fleksy users, and all previous purchasers are automatically upgraded to the full version. For everyone else, Fleksy is now free to download and try. You need to purchase the full version if you want to use the text you type. More information is at http://fleksy.com/2012/08/09/fleksy-major-update-now-free-to-try/ To downloaded, visit our

Thanks Rebecca. Still cannot figure out how to capitalize. Does it announce that the letter is capitalized? Seems that could be easier and so could bringing up the screen to send. Re: Fleksy is now free to try
sieghard, I did it, I Got it to just capitalize the g in the word got. Thank you so much for the help! I will now try to bring up the send screen following your advice. Thanks so much. Reggie and Brooks On Aug 10, 2012, at 1:28 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Reggie, You delete by swiping left. If you are typing the slow way, i.e. by touching and holding the screen until you hear the letter spoken, swiping left will erase each letter you typed this way one at a time. If you are typing the fast way by touching approximately where you think the letter should be and by doing the pattern, then a swipe left will undo what you typed since the last word, e.g. if you want to type “Hello Peter” and you typed Hello correctly and it read it back and then you realize you started out wrong for “peter”, you swipe left once and there is a little swish sound which means you can start over. If you typed Peter and it doesn’t come up and is not in the list of suggestions, just do a swipe left after you reach the end of the suggestions and, if for example the last word in the suggestions was “other” Fleksy would make the swish sound and say “deleted other”. Now you can give it another try. As for capitalization, you have to find the letter you want to capitalize the “slow way”, then once Voiceover announces the letter lift your finger and do a 1-finger swipe up from the bottom towards the top, sometimes and I think it’s mostly if you have typed nothing else yet, Voiceover just repeats the letter and you have to swipe up a second time before it will capitalize it. You said in your message “I have tried moving my finger up on the screen” so I believe you may slide your finger up after you find the letter without lifting it first, you have to do a definite swipe or flick up not a slow slide. I just tried this by typing “iPhone” the slow way, I find the “I” then lift my finger, then I find the “p”, lift my finger and then a single swipe up will say “capital p”. If, however, I type the word “Phone” as my first word and do it the slow way, I have to swipe up twice after I find the “p” because the first time I swipe up it just says “p” and the second time it says “capital p”. If you hear what you just typed, i.e. if the text is read back to you, you are touching too high because this reading back of what you typed is triggered by covering up the proximity sensor and it is right at the very top and just to the left of the slot in the glass where your earpiece Is. If you do want Fleksy to read back what you typed you can either raise the phone to your ear or you can just hover your hand or palm over the top of the phone, you don’t have to actually touch the screen to trigger this. As for activating the menu once you are done typing, try and touch the screen at the level of where the volume up and down buttons are. In fact, you could put a finger over top of them so you feel both the volume up and down, then lift that finger move right just a bit (you don’t have to be in the middle of the screen) and plop it down on the screen just to the right of where the volume buttons are, hold for half a second or so and you should hear the dong followed immediately by Voiceover saying “Alert” followed by the text you typed, as soon as you hear the dong you can lift your finger off the screen, if it is a long message you can touch the screen once with 2 fingers to stop Voiceover from continueing to read. Now you can swipe right and find the option you want, Copy and Clear, email, message etc. If you want to continue and add more text, double tap on the “Cancel” button just above the Home Key, it is the last option in the menu, but quickly found by putting your finger on the Home Key and sliding up just a bit. Re: Talking gps?
Since I don't have much experience with any of these, do you always have to put in an address as a destination? I myself am partial to MapQuest from AoL, but I don't have a lot of experience with other apps. I tried MapQuest, since it was free, and since it's done everything I wanted to, I haven't look at much else, except for YellowPages, which I don't like as much, although I'm still looking at it. I would never think to call someone else who doesn't like MapQuest to be narrow minded though. Choice is good, and it's good that we have different options here so people can find and use what works for them. It's not narrow mindedness if people end up liking different options. Just type in the business name and most of the time I am going to the closest one in the list. Navigone used to be good, but it didn't even get my route right the last time I used it for a route that I really needed it for. Hi, Seconded. If your major complaint with Navigon is the point of interest database, that's sort of like complaining about a car because they don't make it in the color you want. The key to a GPS app is in route navigation and directions. If you enter an address, navigon does a great job of getting you there. I've never had issues with it getting me from point A to point B. If I have a complaint about navigon, it's in the destination entering user interface. That definately requires some practice time. But, despite the other post to the contrary, I've found the POI database fine for my needs, and since it integrates with around me, and I can send POIs directly to navigon from there, finding a point of interest is quite easy. Also, if you can't stand address entry, the third party app called Navigon Now, can make that part simple too. So, if there are other issues with Navigon beyond it didn't have the one point of interest I happened to be looking for, then by all means, bring itt up an dlet's discuss. --Scott Prayer: begging a god to reconsider its plan. Hi Jordan, I think statements like Navigon is crap should always be avoided, Navigon works extremely well for a lot of people and by that I do mean blind or visually impaired people using Voiceover. I used Navigon every day during a vacation on Maui in March and it worked flawlessly every time and the information it had including restaurants and POI's was very accurate. Based on good reviews on here I recently tried Motion X GPS Drive and found it much more difficult to use than Navigon, but I won't say it resembles fecal matter because I am sure that with more practice it's quite usable. I personally prefer paying upfront instead of an annual subscription and as far as I know you also need a data connection for Motion X whereas navigon maps are downloaded to the phone and since I don't necessarily have a data connection when I travel to other countries that is a big advantage. How well a GPS app works is subjective at best because there are quite a few factors involved so it's probably a good idea to put things into perspective by pointing out that while Navigon may not have worked well for you it's not one of the leading GPS apps for no reason. I agree that it could be a lot better both with respect to features as well as Voiceover, but it's very useable and in combination with Sendero LookAround or Ariadne it does a pretty good job especially since Ariadne now can run in the background. Re: word breaker
Right above the letters is a string of dashes or hyphens which from left to right will show you the position of the letters as you tap them.
