RE: scanning apps

2021-05-20 Thread Richard Turner
It claims to.
But again, I would never recommend using an app for a book, at least not
currently, and KNFB Reader in particular as it has many issues since version 3
was released.
I’ve not kept up with it since other apps perform better even though they do
not have column recognition as yet.

And, unless someone has it already, it ain’t worth $100.

If Openbook, then the Pearl camera and Openbook will give better results than
any app on an iPhone at this time.
With Openbook, you can have it separate the facing pages, so you can scan two
pages at once and have them treated as two pages.
Plus, Openbook can deal with columns, where no scanning app can as yet.

I’m not sure Winston is going to implement column recognition any time soon, if
ever.

SuperSense is working on column recognition, which would help in separating
facing pages, but I would not try scanning a book with an iPhone or Android
device without a good stand so you don’t have to continually raise the phone to
the perfect spot each time….

you have text in view is a tone that plays. The louder the tone, the more text.
If you have it on auto-capture, once you are steady at the loudest tone for 2

You want to be 10 to 12 inches above a full 8.5 by 11 document to get the best

Supersense, tells you in words to move farther away, or 1 inch to the left,

is haf price for a lifetime subscription for $49.99. Or there are monthly or

Voice Dream Scanner on the other hand, is $5.99 one time purchase.
They both have great points about them and Supersense is designed to deal with
more objects than just text.
You could also use the free Seeing AI app to scan a single page.
Good luck.

Voice Dream Scanner on the other hand, is $5.99 one time purchase.
They both have great points about them and Supersense is designed to deal with
more objects than just text.
You could also use the free Seeing AI app to scan a single page.
Good luck.

Robin,

I see it.

When Andy said "scanner Deluxe", it sounded more likely to be similar to the
KNFB app that scans printed materials into images.

He could have used a different word to make it more accurate so as to avoid
confusion.

Hi,
I'm not Andy but perhaps I can clarify.
Scanner Deluxe refers to an app that allows the hearing of streams of police
radio communications. the physical devices some use to listen or stream this
audio from are called scanners as they scan the frequencies first responders
broadcast on. It has nothing to do with apps that scan in images of text to
turn into speech output. I hope this helps.

Hello everyone,

I just have a quick question I hope someone can help me with.

I was wondering, is there possibly a better App out there, for finding
police and other type feeds?

I am currently using 50 Radio Pro. I have the paid version. I've had this
App for a few years now.

I like it alright, but it doesn't seem to have many feeds in my area. I
don't know why this is. And it is as though they have removed a couple of
feeds. I have found a few other feeds using Tune-in.

I live outside of Saint Louis. So you would think there would be many.
But I guess not.

Any help, or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

2016-11-07 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
I'm not sure how he could have used different wording as that is the name of
the app to which he was referring. How else could he have posted about it
accurately without using its name?

Either way I'm glad the confusion was dispelled.

2016-11-07 Thread 'ray t. mahorney' via VIPhone
Scanner radio deluxe might serve you better. Both talk to broadcastify.com.
One possibility for the reduced number of feeds, Most of those feeds are
provided by individuals For example, the feed for the W8VPV repeater is
basically a scanner at 60 feet connected to a computer streaming to
broadcastify. What may have happened is that some of these individuals have
had to discontinue their feeds. If on the other hand, the feed is being
provided by a government entity then you're pretty much at the murcy of that
entity and what they decide to stream or not. If you try scanner radio
deluxe, let me know how you get on with it.

Subject: questions regarding police scanning Apps

Hello everyone,

I just have a quick question I hope someone can help me with.

I was wondering, is there possibly a better App out there, for finding
police and other type feeds?

I am currently using 50 Radio Pro. I have the paid version. I've had
this App for a few years now.

I like it alright, but it doesn't seem to have many feeds in my area. I
don't know why this is. And it is as though they have removed a couple
of feeds. I have found a few other feeds using Tune-in.

I live outside of Saint Louis. So you would think there would be many.
But I guess not.

Any help, or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: questions regarding police scanning Apps

2016-11-07 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi Terri.

I can't recommend a good police scanner app, but I can explain why the choices
are decreasing. Within the past few years, many ares have gone digital. In
other words, they're encrypting their transmissions, and you need a special
code to decrypt them. Some places are giving the codes out, but others aren't.
In a way, I can understand the latter thinking, because if using analog
transmissions, the bad guys would know the cops were coming and quit their bad
guy behavior. It's kind of sad, though, because I enjoyed listening to the
police and fire. Both my Grandfathers and an uncle of mine were volunteer fire
fighters, and my Grandparents on my Mom's side were perametics, so it was fun
to hear what was going on. I also had the 10 codes of the local police for
Lexington, Kentucky, where I live, so I could know pretty well what was
happening.

Hope that, if it doesn't help, at least it sheds some light on what's happening.

Kevin Minor, Lexington, KY

2015-12-06 Thread Teresa Christian
Does anyone know a slick way to locate the bar code?

The problem I run into most of the time is not knowing where the bar code is.
Does anyone know how to figure that out? I start digiteyes, then start turning
the item slowly, around and around and up and down and rarely do I end up
locating the bar code.

I still feel that DigitEyes is the best bar code scanning app.

The thing to remember, is to start with the phone against the item you are
scanning, start the app scanning and then slowly pull the phone back and most
of the time, before you get 8 or 10 inches away it has recognized the bar code.

Of course, I'm assuming you are starting from about the place you think the bar
code is located.

If you just want to go by a picture of the item, rather than bar code, I like
CamFind.

Re: best bar code scanning apps?.com - 3 updates in 3 topics

2015-12-06 Thread Richard Turner

Here are some of the scanning tips from the Digit-Eyes web site.
Scanning Tips

Q. Where will I find UPC codes?
A. UPC codes are typically located where humans will not find them. They are
oblong, typically at least one half inch / 1 cm in height and at least three
times as long as they are tall. You will find the bar codes are often located:

on boxes: away from the side that is opened.
on cans with wrapped labels: adjacent to the seam where the labels are joined
on jars with a single label: as far away from the center portion of the label
as possible.
on jars with two labels: on the back label (typically the front label will be
larger and may be more elaborate in shape; back labels are typically smaller
and simpler.)
on packages that are rectangular with small sides: on the longer of the two
small sides.
They will almost always be within 4 inches of the bottom of the object because
that is typically the maximum scan height of a supermarket scanner.
Q. What about soda cans and things that don't have obvious labels?
A. It can be difficult to locate codes on items that are round and that have
continuous wrap labels or where the bar code is part of the printing, as on a
soda can. In this case, it is typically necessary to scan the entire label
surface. We've found it convenient to do this by bracing the bottom of the
phone on a table and putting the can in front of it. When the phone is
scanning, it makes ticking noises. Each time that there is a tick, turn the can
1/4 turn in front of the camera. We have found that it rarely takes all four
turns to get a scan.

Q. Any tricks for scanning UPC / EAN codes?
A. When you are starting out, you should definitely try the practice sheets.
These let you become familiar with the use of the camera.

After getting comfortable with the practice exercises, try a real item and
start with a box. Initially, you will probably find that it is usually easier
to hold the phone steady and turn the item slowly in front of it. One of our
customers reports that he got great results by using a holder from his wife's
plate collection, putting the phone in it and turning the item in front of it.
After you have more a feel for the process, you'll probably want to transition
to holding the phone in your hand, but a hands-free approach can be very useful
when putting the groceries away!

Helpful Hint: If you are having problems with the object, we recommend rotating
it 90 degrees; the bar codes can be scanned from any angle and rotating the
object will cause the autofocus on the camera to reset.

Re: best bar code scanning apps?.com - 3 updates in 3 topics

2015-12-06 Thread Richard Turner

I still feel that DigitEyes is the best bar code scanning app.
The thing to remember, is to start with the phone against the item you are
scanning, start the app scanning and then slowly pull the phone back and most
of the time, before you get 8 or 10 inches away it has recognized the bar code.
Of course, I'm assuming you are starting from about the place you think the bar
code is located.
If you just want to go by a picture of the item, rather than bar code, I like
CamFind.

RE: best bar code scanning apps?.com - 3 updates in 3 topics

2015-12-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Teresa,

If you go to the Digit Eyes website there are some very useful tips regarding
where to look for the barcode on certain types of packaging. It’s not possible
to know 100% of the time exactly where they put it, but these guidelines help.

Does anyone know a slick way to locate the bar code?

The problem I run into most of the time is not knowing where the bar code is.
Does anyone know how to figure that out? I start digiteyes, then start turning
the item slowly, around and around and up and down and rarely do I end up
locating the bar code.

Teresa ☺

Whether it's worth it or not depends on your personal circumstances. If you
can get good results free hand, you probably don't need the StandScan Pro,
but if you struggle with taking good pictures, it's definitely worth it.
After all, the StandScan Pro is considerably cheaper than a flatbed scanner.

Re: scanning apps

2014-02-26 Thread David Chittenden
What an interesting perspective. It is like saying, I bought a Compaq computer
and it was useless, so I now believe no computer will work for me.

Text Detective was designed for blind people. It can only scan about 2/3 of the
page per scan. It works decently well for this coverage so long as the user
follows the instructions for use that are in the app. And, one must have good
lighting.

How can Text Grabber be only $5 to $10? Well, Text Grabber was developed for
sighted people, not for blind people. Therefore, it is targeted to a much
larger market, so can amortise the costs across many many more customers.

I use Text Grabber daily, along with my StandScan Pro to read through my mail
and other printed paperwork. In other words, for less than the cost of a
flatbed scanner, I have the entire OCR solution, on my iPhone, at about the
same quality.

Hello Chris,

Whether it's worth it or not depends on your personal circumstances. If you
can get good results free hand, you probably don't need the StandScan Pro,
but if you struggle with taking good pictures, it's definitely worth it.
After all, the StandScan Pro is considerably cheaper than a flatbed scanner.

Cheers,

RE: scanning apps

2014-02-25 Thread DJ
I have to agree that Text Grabber is the best out there at this time. I use
it all of the time with great success. You must have a steady hand if you
are going to hold the phone when taking the snapshot of the page as with all
pictures, but it sure does work.

Re: scanning apps

2014-02-24 Thread Antonio Guimaraes
I bought text detective and I'm rather disappointed.

It is useless enough to leave me skeptical about any iPHone scanning solution.

Based on results, do any of you think I should reconsider, and give Textgrabber
a try?

It's not too expensive, which is a noter reason to be skeptical. How can this
be developed and sold for $5 and change, and be what we expect it to do?

Some times you do get what you pay for.

2014-02-24 Thread Anne Robertson
TextGrabber and Prizmo both do an excellent job on OCR. If you have a steady
hand and a good understanding of how to ensure that the page is visible to the
app, they can both be used free hand very successfully. Several of us have
posted our results from these apps here to show what can be done. You need good
lighting, and if, like me, you have no light perception, the Light Detector app
is a must as well.

Cheers,

2014-02-24 Thread Teresa Cochran
For me, the process of using OCR apps in iOS has always been a challenge. At
best, I can get a few words, just enough to find out what the object is. I
notice that I've gotten better with practice, but it's very rough going for me.
I don't know how much of my difficulty has to do with never having had sight,
but I'd imagine that generally, it's easier for those who've had sight, because
finding the best visual situation for this task comes more easily to those
who've had sight. Of course, I'm generalizing here, and I may be wrong. after
all, I haven't done a formal study of this issue. :) I am continuing to
practice, and I'm patient, but I have to say, the experience is certainly not
like using a flat-bed scanner with an application such as Kurzweil 1000 or Open
Book.

Hello Teresa,

For someone who's never had sight, the StandScan Pro makes the process of
scanning with the iPhone so much easier as it provides the ideal conditions for
taking a good picture. For the hassle it saves, it's well worth the money.
After all, you get the whole bundle for less than $40 which is cheaper than any
flatbed scanner.

Hello,

I totally agree with Ann. Even though I have light perception, the accuracy of
using either Prizmo or Text Grabber with the StandScan pro will give one the
structure of where to place the phone to get the best results. I used it today
and had no problems scanning over 50 pieces of documents trying to get ready

work out of not having enough light or casting a shadow. If you are seriously
thinking about scanning lots of stuff, this is the way to go. HTH.

like using a flat-bed scanner with an application such as Kurzweil 1000 or Open
Book.

It is useless enough to leave me skeptical about any iPHone scanning solution.

Based on results, do any of you think I should reconsider, and give Textgrabber

It's not too expensive, which is a noter reason to be skeptical. How can this
be developed and sold for $5 and change, and be what we expect it to do?

Hi Lori,

Yes. You can scan a printed document such as a piece of mail and then read
it right on the resulting screen that pops up after it is automaticly
converted into text.

Re: scanning apps

2014-02-20 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Alex,

Text Grabber is another app that I use with best results with a StandScan Pro.
I could be corrected by others, but I believe the StandScan Po web site is
www.standscan.com. I also use Text Detector to sort my mail. From time to time,
Text Grabber will go on sale for $0.99. I do have Prizmo installed and use with
my Stand Scan Pro. The pro version has LED lights that increase the accuracy
with OCRing. I hope this helps.

used with VoiceOver, but many of the processing buttons are just labeled as

button. In addition, the layout of this app is more like the arrangement

of Prizmo before the last version update in terms of the number elements to

navigate through. Unlike Prizmo and TextGrabber, but similar to many OCR
apps, including Text Detective, you must have your text in the proper
orientation in order for the OCR to work. So if you do not have vision, you

will have to try rotating the image that was taken, either with the
processing control buttons in the app, or by taking another picture, and
 then reprocessing the image.

Please understand that the features that make a a good scanning/OCR app for

sighted users may be different from the ones viphone list members would
prioritize. CamScanner+ uses OCR to create searchable PDF files. For many

users, the image format of a document is the primary format they will use,
and they only want it to be a searchable PDF -- meaning that they can type
in some words in the document to pull up the image file. For many
purposes, like travel receipts for business purposes, they have to submit
an actual image of the document.

In any case, CamScanner+ is optimized to provide searchable PDFs with the
OCR (a feature that Prizmo also has), and to optimize the automatic
adjustment of color and background of scanned documents to make the images
more readable. It is not designed to optimize providing a text version of
 the material.

I suspect that we have all tried other scanning apps. Some that have been
used and discussed on list include Perfect OCR and Say Text. Some that
were suggested but addressed as to why they are not suitable for visually
impaired users, although they receive good ratings by sighted users include

Genius Scan. You can search the archives for other examples. The apps
that are most discussed and recommended on list are usually the result of
having tried (many) other app options that do not work well. A large
number (if not most) scanner apps for the iPhone require interactive
adjustment of the image area, which blind users cannot perform

Re: Look Tell organizer, any recent scanning apps

2012-10-07 Thread Russ Kiehne
 VoiceOver's volume will
decrease significantly
once the camera option in the app is activated, you might want to wear
headphones

in order to hear instructions at a normal volume.
Once out of the Settings menu, place the iPhone on the document with the
camera's
lens in the middle of the page, using the side of the document to ensure the
phone
is straight. After lifting the phone 7 to 9 inches from the paper, double
tap the
Text Button. When the next screen loads, activate the Camera button.
Your phone
will vibrate when the camera screen loads; you'll hear the VoiceOver prompt,
Say

'Take Picture' when ready.
Once you take the picture, activate the Use button, which is the last
button at
the bottom of the screen. On the next screen, activate the Next button at
the top
right, which activates the processing screen. Once processed, VoiceOver will
announce
that the document can be edited, and you can read the results by doing a two
finger
swipe down. After you have reviewed the document, activate the Next
button. On
the new screen, there will be several options, including Save,
Translate, and
Copy. Doing a three finger left swipe will bring up additional options,
such as
Mail and the Cloud app. Activating any of these buttons will open up the
appropriate
page. Activating the Done button in the upper right corner of the screen
will close

the screen and bring the app back to its home screen.
Prizmo did best with the letter and the magazine page. Although one scan of
each
did not give all the information and resulted in some gibberish, most of the
information
was read. Prizmo had more trouble with the book, especially with text
closest to

the fold.
TextDetective version 1.0.4
This $1.99 app works on iOS 5 or later and was designed for people with
visual impairments.
The app description states that TextDetective allows you to read, edit, or
copy and
paste the recognized text from the image that you take into other documents
or e-mails,
and to store it in a History tab. While the description states that the app
works
best with the iPhone 4S and is also useable with the iPhone 4 and iPod
Touch, it

cautions iPad users due to the difference in that device's camera placement.
TextDetective is relatively easy to use. The user holds the device in
landscape mode
with the Home button to the left. When the app loads, there are four tabs
on the
bottom of the screen: Scan, History, Tips, and Feedback. By default, the
Scan tab

is selected.
To use the app, align the Home button with the edge of a document, then
lift the
phone up until it's about 8 to10 inches away from the document. Double tap
the Start
Scan button. When TextDetective finds the document, the phone will vibrate.
This
can take a few seconds, especially with the iPhone 4, but VoiceOver will
speak conversion
progress messages as it's happening. Once the app has finished processing
the document,
a new screen will appear with the text. At the top right of the screen is a
button
which allows for reading the entire text or individual segments. Whatever
has been

scanned is automatically saved in the History tab.
The TextDetective app did best with the printed page. Like Prizmo, it also
worked
well with the magazine page, and though it performed better than Prizmo with
books,
it still needed several scans for each page. TextDetective showed the most
difference
between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S in processing speed, with the 4S
giving a

somewhat better scan.
Conclusion
By far, the best app of the three was TextDetective, with its solid
performance and
reasonable price. I do not recommend SayText as it had the least effective
results

by far.

RE: Look Tell organizer, any recent scanning apps

2012-10-07 Thread Richard Turner
I was going to comment to AFB on that article. My experience has been
pretty much the opposite of theirs.
I have gotten SayText to work, but not consistently enough to rely on, but
of the other two, Prizmo out performs TextDetective hands-down for me. It
is too bad all these apps don't have free trial versions so a person could
test to see which one works for them without buying.

Subject: Re: Look Tell organizer, any recent scanning apps

Perhaps the following from Access World will help:
What's on this Page: A Review of the SayText, Prizmo, and TextDetective iOS
Reading Apps Janet Ingber When the K-NFB Reader Mobile was released in
January 2008, it revolutionized how people with visual impairments could
scan and read printed materials using their cell phone camera. The K-NFB
Reader Mobile's software, an Optical Character Recognition
(OCR) program, was developed by Ray Kurzweil and the National Federation of
the Blind.
That software, however, can only be used on a limited number of Nokia cell
phones, which not all carriers support, and although the K-NFB Reader Mobile
is self-voicing (which makes the cell phone fully accessible), a separate
screen reader program must be purchased and installed. The K-NFB Reader,
Nokia phone, and separate screen reader can be a very expensive combination.
Users of iOS devices (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, etc.) now have several
choices for OCR apps. Although these apps do not have all the capabilities
of the pioneering K-NFB Reader Mobile, they are extremely inexpensive, and
no additional screen reader is necessary.
The apps reviewed here are SayText, Prizmo, and TextDetective. SayText and
TextDetective are designed specifically for people with visual impairments.
For this review, each app was tested three times using a printed sheet (a
letter), a glossy page from a magazine, and a book page, on both an iPhone 4
and an iPhone 4S. (The iPhone 4S has a more sophisticated camera than the
iPhone 4, but the slight improvement in performance is not enough to warrant
getting the 4S.) Lighting conditions were the same for all tests.
Getting Started
These apps need good light as they will not work in very dim lighting
conditions.
Finding the correct distance between the document and the camera lens takes
some trial and error, and it's not always the distance that the app
instructions recommend.
Depending on the size of the page, it may take several scans to capture the
entire document. The document needs to be flat, since any wrinkling or folds
will cause the app to read as gibberish. If scanning results come back as a
combination of words and gibberish, try a different scanning distance, make
sure the document is completely flat, and try scanning with more available
light (and be careful not to block the light with your body).
SayText Version 1.3
As described in the iTunes Store, SayText Version 1.3 is a free product
created for users who are blind or visually impaired. It requires iOS 5.0 or
later.
When the app loads, there are four available buttons: Take Picture,
Tutorial,
Settings, and Info. The tutorial is easy to follow, but unfortunately,
the app does not work properly. According to the tutorial, the user must
place the iOS device on the document with the camera facing down, then
slowly lift the device up.
When
the document is in focus, a beep should sound. The camera takes the photo
and then translates the result into text. While the document is processing,
the user can tap the screen to check on progress. Once the document is
converted, you swipe right to hear the text.
During all the testing, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S never made a beep
sound and never snapped a photo. You need to activate the Take Picture
button, which brings up a new screen with a Camera button, and activating
that button causes the camera to take a picture. When the app indicated that
OCR was complete, I attempted to read the text, but all I got was gibberish.
The app did not read the printed page, the glossy magazine page, or the page
from a book. I used sighted assistance to try to get a better image but
still had the same result. My next step was to check the AppleVis website to
determine if other users have the same problem. There are many comments, and
everyone that posted a comment seems to have had the same experience.
SayText is a very disappointing product. According to the instructions, it's
easy to use and gives good results, but we were unable to get the app to
read anything during testing.
Prizmo Version 1.1.7
This $9.99 app works on all iOS devices running iOS 3.1 or later. The iTunes
Store description of the app claims that Prizmo will scan and recognize the
text from your photos of text documents, business cards, bills, and even
whiteboards, and with the use of Cloud technology, you can

Re: Look Tell organizer, any recent scanning apps

2012-10-07 Thread Scott Howell
-operated
shooting for taking the image that you want read.
This app is somewhat complicated to use. When the app loads, there are
 several options
from which to choose, including Settings, Text, and Business Card. In the
 Settings
menu, you should turn off the alignment grid and turn on the speech control
 option,
which allows the user to take a photo by voice rather than by activating the
 button.
This can help with image stabilization. Since VoiceOver's volume will
 decrease significantly
once the camera option in the app is activated, you might want to wear
 headphones
in order to hear instructions at a normal volume.
Once out of the Settings menu, place the iPhone on the document with the
 camera's
lens in the middle of the page, using the side of the document to ensure the
 phone
is straight. After lifting the phone 7 to 9 inches from the paper, double tap
 the
Text Button. When the next screen loads, activate the Camera button. Your
 phone
will vibrate when the camera screen loads; you'll hear the VoiceOver prompt,
 Say
 'Take Picture' when ready.
Once you take the picture, activate the Use button, which is the last
 button at
the bottom of the screen. On the next screen, activate the Next button at
 the top
right, which activates the processing screen. Once processed, VoiceOver will
 announce
that the document can be edited, and you can read the results by doing a two
 finger
swipe down. After you have reviewed the document, activate the Next button.
 On
the new screen, there will be several options, including Save, Translate,
 and
Although one scan of
 each
did not give all the information and resulted in some gibberish, most of the
 information
was read. Prizmo had more trouble with the book, especially with text closest
 to
While the description states that the app
 works
best with the iPhone 4S and is also useable with the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch,
 it
cautions iPad users due to the difference in that device's camera placement.
TextDetective is relatively easy to use. The user holds the device in
 landscape mode
with the Home button to the left. When the app loads, there are four tabs
 on the
bottom of the screen: Scan, History, Tips, and Feedback. By default, the Scan
 tab
 is selected.
Once the app has finished processing the
 document,
a new screen will appear with the text. At the top right of the screen is a
 button
which allows for reading the entire text or individual segments. Whatever has
 been
scanned is automatically saved in the History tab.
The TextDetective app did best with the printed page. Like Prizmo, it also
 worked
well with the magazine page, and though it performed better than Prizmo with
 books,
it still needed several scans for each page. TextDetective showed the most
 difference
between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S in processing speed, with the 4S
 giving a
 somewhat better scan.
 Conclusion
By far, the best app of the three was TextDetective, with its solid
 performance and
reasonable price. I do not recommend SayText as it had the least effective
 results
 by far.

The one that allows you to take a picture of an object and record an audio

However, you want to make sure that you get the object to fill as much of
