RE: Vizwiz Contact info from the website

2014-01-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Julie,

Here is the app store link for VizWiz and it contains answers to your
questions:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vizwiz/id439686043?mt=8

Just for your information, it's really easyto look up an app either on your
iPhone or on the computer. Of course on the phone you wold just open the app
store, tab on the Search tab (second from the right across the bottom) and
then type the app name in the search box at the top of the screen. Make sure
you press Search at the bottom right of the on-screen keyboard because
that will pull up results which may not be in the list of instant search
results which is displayed as you type in the app name.

On the computer all you have to do is open Google and type Vizwiz on
iTunes. Of course you can replace VizWiz with any other app name you want
to look up.

Now use 2, the shortcut for heading level 2, to jump to the search
results.

The first time you usually land on a heading which would look like this:

Ad related to vizwiz on itunes

Of course VizWiz would be replaced by whatever it is you searched for. This
is an ad result and just a generic ad/link to the Apple App Store.

Type 2 again and you come to the second Heading of Level 2 Search Results.

Now switch to 3 as all actual search results are of Heading Level 3 type and
you can just jump through them by repeatedly pressing 3.

Typically the very first result is a link which takes you straight to the
app page. Here is what that looks like and also what some of the other
search results are, this is copied straight from the Google search results:

1. VizWiz on the App Store on iTunes

https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/vizwiz/id439686043?mt=8

Sep 29, 2013 - ... ratings, see screenshots, and learn more about VizWiz on
the App Store. Download VizWiz and enjoy it on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod
touch.

2. VizWiz now available in iTunes store | Media Access Australia

3. VizWiz App Answers Blind Users' Spoken Questions on What's ...

4. VizWiz - App of the Month, August 2011 - TechKnowMore blog - RNIB

Once you activate the iTunes link from the first search result and the app
store page opens you can once again use 1 for headling level 1 to junp
straight to the app and then use the down arrow to read the description,
when it was last updated, what was new in the update and further down the
cost.

Hope this helps,

Sieghard

Hello,

The way VizWiz works is that you take a picture first. The next step is that
you will be prompted to record a question. A new screen will open and you can
toggle the different types of response engines. I usually only select web
workers. The last time I use the app it took about 4 minutes to get a
response. However, at the time, I didn't have any sighted assistance, so the
wait was worth it. HTH.

2014-01-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Eileen,

Which phone do you have? I tried VizWiz last week on my 5S and it could not
understand/record my question. I tried it several times and each time the app
told me I had not recorded a question. I have given the app access to the
microphone and I wonder if maybe this only effects the 5S with the 64 Bit
processor since they did update VizWiz at the end of September and list iO?S 7
compatibility. I also remember another person saying they couldn’t record and
it would be interesting to pin this down and let them know although I somehow
think they must have figured this out by now.

Anyhow, my answer took about 7 hours and I think I read somebody else got a
reply the next day. I used to use VizWiz on my digital thermostat which
controls my in-floor heating, but I tried this with Tap Tap See and got the
correct reply with the current temperature within 20 seconds.

I have a feeling VizWiz may be one of these apps like Daisy Worm or In Daisy
which will just seize to exist at some point. It definitely shows how Tap Tap
See did the right thing and went with a paid model, let’s hope this works for
them and they make enough money to not only keep the service going but to
improve it and add the ability to ask a simple question along with the picture.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: Vizwiz Contact info from the website

2014-01-30 Thread Eric Caron

I agree with all the comments concerning Tap Tap See mentioned in this thread.
My only problem is that without the question I rarely get the correct info I
want from a picture. This is why I am sad to see VizWiz seemingly fade away do
to lack of funding and I believe other resources.

I did receive a response from VizWiz and I'm posting with permission the email
below.

start of message

 Hi Eric,

I'll look into this -- certainly, the amount of time/attention that
we're able to spend on this varies. We do try very hard to make sure
it is working. But, it's a free service, and as such everyone
supporting it has many many other things on their plate. IQ Engines in
particular may not be supported ... they were recently purchased by
Yahoo and (I believe) discontinued their API.

We have been experimenting with various volunteer models for
answering questions, but it's trickier than it would appear at first.
That also only solves the human labor component, not the cost of
development/upkeep/server maintenance. It's not clear how to make the
 latter in particular self-sustaining.

If you, or other users, have thoughts on these long-term issues, I
 would love to consider them.

As for email, I generally try to respond to emails very quickly. But,
I get hundreds of emails a day across different projects, etc., so
sometimes they unfortunately get missed. I'm sorry if I let one slip
 through.

 Thanks, Jeff

Hi Sieghard,

To answer your question, I am using an iPhone4 with iOS 6.1.2. I am one of
those individuals that doesn't like to upgrade when a new operating system is
released. I still have the ability to record a question. At one point, I did
upgrade VizWil, but I was not satisifed with the way the app was working, so I
rolled it back.

workers. The last time I use the app it took about 4 minutes to get a
response. However, at the time, I didn't have any sighted assistance, so the
wait was worth it. It's free. HTH.

I also wrote to support and got a thoughtful and positive response back.

I hope that VizWiz can improve and mature as a app. It seems that they are

Hi Keith,

Can you tell me what kind of phone you used and what operating system?
I'm beginning to wonder if the iPhone 4 or running iOS6 allows VizWiz to work.
I'm using a 4S and a 5S both using iOS 7.04.

also, were you able to record a question, or did you just send a picture?

Hi Betty,

Thanks for this nice note. I was not offended. I wanted to correct the
comment that a vehicle would use only one tire size. There are many
possibilities for a single rim and several rims possible for most vehicles. I
also love the chance to talk about my camper van and it doesn't usually come up
in connection to my iPhone. though in fact VizWiz was especially helpful for
me when double checking fluid containers such as engine oil verses transmission

down the times I had to wait for a sighted person to show up to ask such
questions.

I'm sorry if my earlier message had a uncomfortable tone.

Re: VizWiz

2014-01-22 Thread Eileens Misrahi
Hello Folks,

I just used VizWiz and I am happy to say that I received an answer. I am using
an iPhone 4, iOS 6.1.2, and the version of VizWiz prior to the current version.
It took 4 minutes to receive the first answer. I am not sure if one is using
iOS 7.0.4 and a 64 bit chip on the phone that would make a difference if VizWiz
would behave differently. If others continue to have problems using the app,
then a concertive effort to let the developers know of the issues. HTH
Bast,
Eileen

Sent from my iPhone

On Jan 22, 2014, at 11:27 AM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote:

 Hello,

Somebody asked recently whether VizWiz was still working. I used it yesterday
for the first time on my iPhone 5S to see if I could get a reply about what
the LED display of my digital thermostat for my in-floor heating system said.

First of all I took the picture, then as usual I tapped Record and asked my
question. However, when I tapped to send the picture, the app said that no
question had been recorded. I did allow the app to use the microphone and
tried a few more times both with Apple Earpods plugged in and without using
the iPhone’s built-in microphone and it appears that it doesn’t want to
record the question. Has anybody else experienced this?

Anyhow, I sent the image to webworkers anyways assuming they might get what I
 want.
Now it gets interesting. I sent the picture a few minutes before 11 AM and
then did something else for a minute or 2 waiting for a reply. When none came
I used Tap Tap See and within about 20 seconds received a result which said
“Thermostat 26 Degrees” which is exactly what I wanted.
I forgot about VizWiz until about 4:30 PM (5 and a half hours after I sent
the picture) at which time I received 2 push notifications from VizWiz, here
 is the text:

 1. Where is the question, it is good looking switch
 2. Thermostat 26 degrees Celsius

So, VizWiz apparently still does work, but even if answers came after 10
minutes instead of 5.5 hours the service is pretty useless in many instances
where you probably want an answer immediately which means at least within a
 minute or so.

Of course there is still the issue that at least on my 5S VizWiz also doesn’t
seem to record the question. Let’s hope Tap Tap See comes up with a way to
ask a question, I think even asking a question you have to type into a text
field would be good and probably even better since a recording takes up a lot
more space hence it takes longer to transmit the picture with a recording and
one can always use SIRI to dictate a short question which is probably just as
 good.
 Regards,
 Sieghard

Re: VizWiz

2014-01-22 Thread Eric Caron
Hi listers,

I was the original poster. I tried using VizWiz , latest version, on
both my 4 S and 5S using iOS 7.04 and I could not record a question. I could
not even find where to select web workers or the IQ Engines. options I used to
find along with email and twitter and such.

I miss this app as the ability to ask a question made all the
difference to me.

If anyone has the contact info for the developer I'd love to write to them.

 system said.

First of all I took the picture, then as usual I tapped Record and asked my
question. However, when I tapped to send the picture, the app said that no
question had been recorded. I did allow the app to use the microphone and
tried a few more times both with Apple Earpods plugged in and without using
the iPhone's built-in microphone and it appears that it doesn't want to
record the question. Has anybody else experienced this?

Anyhow, I sent the image to webworkers anyways assuming they might get what
 I want.
Now it gets interesting. I sent the picture a few minutes before 11 AM and
then did something else for a minute or 2 waiting for a reply. When none
came I used Tap Tap See and within about 20 seconds received a result which
said Thermostat 26 Degrees which is exactly what I wanted.

Of course there is still the issue that at least on my 5S VizWiz also
doesn't seem to record the question. Let's hope Tap Tap See comes up with a
way to ask a question, I think even asking a question you have to type into
a text field would be good and probably even better since a recording takes
up a lot more space hence it takes longer to transmit the picture with a
recording and one can always use SIRI to dictate a short question which is
 probably just as good.

Re: Vizwiz is it still working?

2014-01-14 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Betty and others,

I have a 1985 Vanagon Westfalia. It can use rims from 14 to 17 inches
in diameter and can run with ranges starting at 185 and up. Also some came with
alloy wheels and some with steel wheels and they were different sizes. To
match my existing tire I would need to read the tire not just know the auto and
year. VizWiz was a great app for me as I could ask for exactly what I needed
and get a response. It was helpful from reading the backs of stereos to pizza
directions. I did not find other apps answered my questions. Does anyone
still have VizWiz working? Is there another app that has the ability to ask a
question along with sending the picture?.

Eric Caron
Currently with 14 inch rims with 185/70/14 tires and changing to 205/70/14.
learned from sighted help. I miss VizWiz

 Hi listers,

I don't often turn to one of these apps like VizWiz or Tap Tap See,

question. Tap Tap See has been useless to me because the responses
rarely tell me what I need to know. today I was taking a picture of
my Van's tire to ask them to read the writing for me but no matter
 what I did VizWiz would

not work. It acted like it was taking a picture but nothing was
taken. It would not record a question. Is it still working for other
folks? I tried it on both my 5S and 4S.

I can't be bothered with Tap Tap See as I'm sure no matter how often
 I send

the picture with no questions I'll just get back the answer. It is a
wheel. So as the sale I wanted on tires is now over Not having the
correct info from my tires was definitely a frustration.

I'm hoping VizWiz is still working and just a glitch. I even tried
 deleting

and installing the app with no success.

Any tips or info is appreciated.

Re: VizWiz?

2013-03-08 Thread Scott Davert
Hello all.
Yes, Web Workers were enabled on my device, but that's a good
question. (smiles).
As for the developers, I've contacted them a couple of times, once
after my article was published in 2011 about their app. I have
contacted the m previously about this particular issue, and they said
they were aware of it. However, I'm not sure there is much they can
do. This stuff is done on a voluntary basis, right? If so, as the old
saying goes, beggars can't be choosers. I'll give the app another try
when I have a complicated visual delemma that can be solved through
things like this and see what happens.
One of the features I contacted the developers about was the ability
to type my question instead of having to record an audio file. They
said they were going to include that in the next release, but some
complication or other must have gotten in the way of that, as this was
16 months ago.

Take care,
Scott

Hi Scott, web workers are paid a small amount for each query they answer, and

I took a picture of a can of Varathane once and asked What kind of
Varathane is this since I wasn't sure if it was for interior or exterior

Interior Varathane, can't read the rest, give the can a quarter turn

I turned on the AC or the heater. So mostly it was a point of curiosity with
 the app.

Hi, in my recent stay in Austin I was in a hotel and needed to find out
which button setting would put the thermostat to the air conditioning. I
knew I had a 50/50 outcome possible since the button was a 3 position
button. Middle being off, and left being AC and right being heater.
However I didn't know that at the time. I used Vizwiz to ask the
question, which setting is for the air conditioner. Left or right. The
first time I got the response that I was too far from the thermostat. So
I took a closer picture, and eventually I got 5 responses. However all
of them were dead wrong. The responses ranged from white, to 71, to
thermostat. None of which actually answered my question. So I gave it up
as a bad job and flipped the switch to the left, since on mine at home,
left is AC, and sure enough, I gambled right.

Viz Wiz has consistently worked for me to solve complicated visual problems.
Example I wanted to hook up stereo speakers and needed to know which jacks on
my receiver were red positive or black negative. I took the picture of the
back of the receiver and asked the question are the red connectors on the top
or bottom. In about 30 seconds I got my answer that the red ones were on top.
Ive had success with many similar very specific questions. I like Tap Tap See,
but seldom do I just need to know what is in the picture. Usually I need
something more specific and Viz Wiz does that reliably for me.

2013-03-06 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi there. I am replying very late on this thread, but I am still going through
several messages which I had For later replying to. I can of course have one of
the hotel staff members show me everything in the room. However that was not
the point of my message. I merely wanted to use an app to see how well it would
work identify what I was looking for. I travel quite frequently and so am aware
of the layout of most hotel rooms. Also in regards to the thermostat, I knew
that it was a 50/50 hit or miss on whether I turned on the AC or the heater. So
mostly it was a point of curiosity with the app.

Re: VizWiz?

2013-02-28 Thread Raul A. Gallegos

Hi Nimit,

It all depends on the question you record along with your picture. If, for
example, I send a picture of the LCD screen of my thermostat via VizWiz and
do not record a question like What is the temperature shown on this
thermostat display? I may not get an answer or maybe I get an answer like
LCD screen with numbers.
The advantage of VizWiz is that you can send a picture to a web worker and
ask a very specific question regarding the picture. I haven't used Tap Tap
See, but I don't recall reading that you can send a question along with your
picture, can you?

Hello!

I heard there are people who work for it and answer question of the
picture you send unless it's computorized already? Maybe your picture
wasn't so common and the person took a while to get to you? Just a
guesss. I have tried wiz-wiz and I am really confused. Thanks!
The descriptions sometimes don't help me.

Re: VizWiz?

2013-02-27 Thread Tom Lange
Hi,
I haven't tried Vizwiz in ages and will have to take it for a spin some time
soon just to see how it's doing. Tap Tap See is indeed a great little app, and
perhaps a bit less labor-intensive. The last few times I've used it to
identify things like boxes of baking soda, cake mix and other things it's been
spot on. I was particularly impressed when using it side-by-side with an ID
Mate, which could not identify the boxes that I tried scanning. That, quite
frankly, surprised me, but I'm no expert with an ID Mate by any means. Go
figure.

Hi Folks,

With all of the other updates to VizWiz, I have never had an issue with
it. So, I am wondering if anyone else is having this issue. When I go to
open the app, the iPhone makes the usual sounds as though it will open, but
then I am brought back to my OCR folder where I have other related apps in.
Has anyone else experience this after the last update. If not, can someone
give me suggestions to remedy it other than removing it and reinstalling it?

Thanks in advance.
