Re: Where Does the BARD App Store Its Downloads?

2018-10-01 Thread Craig Werner
After updating to iOS 12, the BARD app is reporting as taking up 147 MB, a
very plausible figure considering the number and size of the books I have
downloaded to my iPhone.

Re: Where Does the BARD App Store Its Downloads?

2018-09-27 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Alan and everyone.

I realize what follows may be boring to many since this report will
not help anyone use the BARD app more effectively; but if anyone is
interested in more findings about BARD app storage reporting, here's
the very dry report. I am writing it out of a sense of duty and not
because I believe anyone's lives will be changed for the better for
reading it.

Problem: When I go to "Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage," my
iPhone running iOS 11.4.1 seems to include the correct number of
megabytes the BARD app takes up of total storage. However, with
several books downloaded, if I click on the BARD app's entry, the app
is shown as taking up 5.5 MB and its documents and data a mere 20 KB.

After an email exchange this morning with NLS BARD support, in which
my emails were answered courteously, quickly, and thoughtfully, I
phoned Apple and got the same advice that I did from NLS: re-install
the app if I liked. No other theory as to how to remedy the problem
was given. I reinstalled the app and got the same behavior.

Later in the day, I decided that instead of again deleting the app and
re-installing it, I would offload the app, preserving the documents
and data until such time as I would install the app once more. As
soon as I offloaded it, the correct byte count for the documents and
data of the app was surprisingly shown: something over 600 MB. This
time, though, the total number of gigabytes of storage reported by
the iPhone did not seem to take into account the gigabyte count taken
up by the BARD app. Feeling totally confused, I deleted everything
connected with the BARD app, reinstalled it, and now have the original
scenario: the total storage of the phone seems to reflect the presence
of the BARD app, but when I check out the app itself, the documents
and data count is again only 20 KB. It is important to stress that
the app is working correctly.

The bottom line: It does seem as if there is a communications
disconnect between the BARD app and the phone, but my diagnostic zeal
has been exhausted. I'm copying this information to NLS Support in
case they want to forward it to BARD's developers. When I download
iOS 12, we'll see what happens.

If you are tired of this thread, I don't blame you in the least.

Thanks for reading.

Craig,

That is curious. I would think it should be fairly straightforward for the
iPhone to calculate and properly report how much storage each app is using.
Keep us posted if you learn what's up.

Thank you, Mark, for jumping in.

I admit my question is prompted by curiosity. Knowing the answer won't assure
that I will use the app more skillfully. At any rate, implicit in my question
is another one: Is my experience about the BARD app's low storage content the
same as other people's? Since no one has said this is odd, I'm concluding that
this is normal. I have never before run into a situation where an app's
downloaded files are not included in the app's storage area itself, and I
wonder why the BARD folks made the app act in this way. In the case of the
Audible, Kindle, and iBooks apps, for instance, I'm pretty sure the app's files
are embedded where one might expect them. Oh well, life is too short to ponder
everything. The bottom line is that the BARD app works very well overall, and
I'm glad to have it.

Re: Where Does the BARD App Store Its Downloads?

2018-09-26 Thread Craig Werner
'tis a puzzlement indeed. All I can say is that the size of the app
appears to be correctly reported, but the megabyte count of the books is
not being shown. However, this latter number is reflected in the report of
total bytes used by the phone. I have an iPhone 5 running iOS 10.3, and
the version of BARD I have on that phone reports sensible numbers. I may
reinstall the app on the iPhone SE running iOS 11.4.1 to see if the issue
clears up; or I may write to the app's developers to ask if they have ever
noted this behavior.

This topic sparked my interest & curiosity. When going to settings, general,
iPhone. The Bard Mobile app takes up 5.5MB. The Documents & Data in the app
uses 4.96GB. This makes sense, being I have 46 books downloaded & the average
length of each book is 8-12 hours. Not sure why your numbers are much lower. 樂樂樂

RE: Where Does the BARD App Store Its Downloads?

2018-09-26 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Craig,

Under Settings, General, iPhone Storage, my iPhone 8 is reporting BARD Mobile
is using 1.74GB. I've got 13 audiobooks loaded into BARD Mobile of varying
lengths but if you consider that an hour of BARD audio is a bit less than 10MB
in size, a book of 10 hours would use about 100MB of space which would work out
to 1.3GB in my case. So I'm assuming some of my books are longer than 10 hours
and the math seems to work.

2018-09-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Craig,

You ask an interesting question to which, I think there is no clear answer.
Apple employs its own file system that, for better or worse, is somewhat of a
mystery to most of us.

I suspect that the various app data, such as books for BARD, are stored all
across the storage device in the most efficient configuration possible. In
short, I don't think the actual files live in any one place on the drive. For
example, when I look at the amount of BARD storage space used on my 8 Plus, it
reports 5.5GB; I have over 30 titles downloaded two of which are over 72 hours
of audio, each. Perhaps the OS reserves so much default storage space for
particular app; this is just a guess, of course.

This is why I assert that if one truly wants to wipe the internal storage
completely clean, the phone much be setup as a new device in order to erase all
of the current data and fresh copies of the OS and apps, installed. At
present, one can only accomplish this via iTunes on a computer.

Mark

"Settings -> General -> iPhone Usage," the BARD app fills only 5.5MB

even though two relatively full-length books have been dowloaded.

"Documents and Data" under the app take up only a few kilobytes of

storage.  Where on the iPhone are my two books kept?

Thank you very much for all help.

Craig

I think it must download, because you can play bard books when you do not have
any kind of connection. If it was streaming from somewhere, that shouldn’t be
possible.

I don’t think it actually downloads to your iDevice. I believe that
there may be a sort of temporary cloud storage that you stream from.

Subject: Where Does the BARD App Store Its Downloads?

Greetings to the list.

I am using the BARD app on iOS 11.4.1, and I notice that when I go to
"Settings -> General -> iPhone Usage," the BARD app fills only 5.5MB
even though two relatively full-length books have been dowloaded.
"Documents and Data" under the app take up only a few kilobytes of
storage. Where on the iPhone are my two books kept?

Thank you very much for all help.
