RE: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-21 Thread Lois Butterfield
Hi Siegard,I just got a cordless phone with link to cell. You can link your
IPhone via Bluetooth to this phone system so you can answer your cellphone
with the cordless. You can discontinue your land service and set the system
to cell only. That is what I plan to do after I try this for a while. I
want to make sure the quality of sound is okay before doing so. It even
transfers your ring tones from your cellphone to the cordless, plus has
talking caller ID.

This way, you can leave your cell on the charger while you answer the phone
anywhere.

I hope this wasn't too off topic.

Yup,

Your right. I guess I was just thinking of my own personal use case where,
when I receive a call, and I'm listening to music or other media on my iPad, I
stop it anyway. haha. So just receiving a call, regardless of what device I'm
using to listen to the media, be it radio, computer, or iPad, just the call
alone interrupts my listening.

But of course, this will not be everyones experience.

Yes, I agree. why would anyone use a telephone communications device

Hi Alan,

The iPad Mini as handy as it might be is definitely not a phone replacement.
Fold an eight and a half by 11 size piece of paper in half and you pretty
much have the size of an iPad Mini (it's 7.9 inches long and 5.5 inches
wide). It also weighs over twice as much as an iPhone 4S and close to 3
times as much as an iPhone 5 and it's just not a device you can comfortable
have with you in your pocket or even in a belt case. People may use their
iPhone for all sorts of stuff, but for many it still has to function well as
a mobile phone whether it's for business use or personal use especially now
that a lot of people don't even have a landline any more.

You could do something like Google Voice/Talkatone or forward calls to a Skype
number. However, I have found both of these alternatives unreliable. Sometimes
the calls will ringthrough, but most often I am left a voice message because I

RE: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Eric,

Of course we won't know until we find out around June 11 when Apple is
having their WWDC, but Tim Cook said recently that there will be no new
devices until the fall and typically WWDC in the last couple of years has
been all about the new iOS. I hope Apple will reveal something truly cool
with respect to iOS 7, but I wouldn't hold my breath regarding any news
about a new iPhone, iPad or anything like that.

Sieghard

Where did you see this price? Best price I've seen was on Blind

eventually get either a mini or full sized iPad but am waiting for a bit

Re: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-16 Thread Ricardo Walker
lol,

Yes. But the truth of the matter is, people are watching less TV on their
smart phone than one might think. People turn to tablets, computers, or actual
televisions for prolonged movie/video content. So yes, why would anyone want a
4 inch Tv. The answer is, most people don't. haha.

And from a technological perspective, much isn't too much to ask for now a day.
but, there comes a point where consumers just rebel, and totally dismiss
certain notions. I mean, just look at it from a ergonomic view point. Have
you ever held an iPad for any length of time? Tell you what, after 20 minutes
or so, you will start to notice the weight and mass of the thing. Yes, one can
use headphones or a bt headset to use with it when on calls but, unless you
just plan on being stationary for most calls, an iPad makes a poor mobile phone
in my opinion. So long story short, its doable, but, I don't think very
practical. At least not practical enough for most consumers to use comfortably.

I can see where Magic Jack and/or Talkatone would work with a Bluetooth

Many of the same arguments were made when Samsung came out with the
Note. Now the Note isn't even the largest smart phone out there. Using
the speaker phone option, or a headset, you wouldn't need to hold it
next to your head all of the time to use it as a phone. I wouldn't want
one myself, but others out there might want such a beast. I'm not
arrogant enough to think that the only successful products out there are
the ones I thought made sense myself.

On 05/16/2013 09:51 AM, Ricardo Walker wrote:

You could do something like Google Voice/Talkatone or forward calls to a
Skype number. However, I have found both of these alternatives unreliable.
Sometimes the calls will ringthrough, but most often I am left a voice message
because I did not get a ring.

RE: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

If you get a 3G/LTE model and a data plan you can easily make it into a cell
phone by using an inbound VoIP number and an app like Acrobits or Groundwire
(both are from the company Acrobits). These are full-featured VoIP apps with
the same features as the phone app including call history, contact
integration and in addition you also get call recording. The one difference
is that you can't dial using touch typing on their keypads, somehow I think
it must be Apple that restricts that because I have never seen a keypad
where you can touch type in any VoIP app including Skype.

Regards,

Sieghard

When I stated TV it was obvious I jokingly meant any video content. Ha ha.
People are watching less video content on their phones? Cite your source,
and you don't count as a source--you're just another lister posting an
opinion until you can prove differently. You don't seem to recall but this
discussion centered around the iPad mini--hence the subject line, which is
not all that heavy, and I'm a small thin woman.

Yes, I agree. why would anyone use a telephone communications device of
this nature in any other way? Besides, for those who have lost track of the
discussion, the argument centers around placing cell service feature on an
iPad mini which makes 100% sense to me and anyone else who has the

simple solution doesn't make for mindless list serve arguments, but it is a

Re: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-16 Thread Lauren Simmons
Guys, in reality, the Samsung 4 and the Note 2 really aren't all that big.
My husband and my brother are cell phone fanatics and each own these things.
I can easily put the phone in my purse. They are very thin and light, even
with a protective cover. I kinda thought the Samsung Galaxy 3 and 4 felt a
bit cheaply made, but they've turned out to be quite well built. The Nexus 7
is also not all that big. On the other hand, the current Nexus 10 is
actually way too big and delicate to carry around.

Yes. But the truth of the matter is, people are watching less TV on their
smart phone than one might think. People turn to tablets, computers, or
actual televisions for prolonged movie/video content. So yes, why would
anyone want a 4 inch Tv. The answer is, most people don't. haha.

And from a technological perspective, much isn't too much to ask for now a
day. but, there comes a point where consumers just rebel, and totally
dismiss certain notions. I mean, just look at it from a ergonomic view
point. Have you ever held an iPad for any length of time? Tell you what,
after 20 minutes or so, you will start to notice the weight and mass of
the thing. Yes, one can use headphones or a bt headset to use with it
when on calls but, unless you just plan on being stationary for most
calls, an iPad makes a poor mobile phone in my opinion. So long story
short, its doable, but, I don't think very practical. At least not
practical enough for most consumers to use comfortably.

  Hi Alan,

If you get a 3G/LTE model and a data plan you can easily make it into a cell
phone by using an inbound VoIP number and an app like Acrobits or Groundwire
(both are from the company Acrobits). These are full-featured VoIP apps with
the same features as the phone app including call history, contact integration
and in addition you also get call recording. The one difference is that you
can't dial using touch typing on their keypads, somehow I think it must be
Apple that restricts that because I have never seen a keypad where you can
touch type in any VoIP app including Skype.

right,

I didn't know it was my responsibility to intuit what you mean. I can only go
by what you wrote. When I think of Tv I think of television and movies before
I think of any 30 second video clip one can find on the internet. But either
way, why don't you prove I'm wrong? Keep in mind, I didn't say all video
content or, just video content. I said prolonged video content. to be more
specific, televisions shows, or feature length movies. I guess you didn't read
that part though. And, you brought up TV and 4 inch screens, not I. I wasn't
aware I just had to respond to the parts of your posts that suited you.

Finally, I'm not a thin woman, and I own an iPad mini. Yes, its relatively
light. But, I certainly can not hold my iPad mini 1 handed while on a call for
as long as I can hold an iPhone. Or any phone for that matter. Yes, one can
use there bluetooth ear piece or, headphones like I could have sworn I
mentioned in my other message, but as I pointed out, unless you are on very
short calls or, just plan on being stationary while on your call, the weight
and mass still plays into the effectiveness as an iPad mini as a phone. And
obviously, there are some folks out there that would love the iPad mini as a
phone. You can find someone who likes anything if you look hard enough. I
just don't think its a practical option for most.

you don't count as a source--you're just another lister posting an opinion

centered around the iPad mini--hence the subject line, which is not all that
heavy, and I'm a small thin woman.

 lol,

Yes. But the truth of the matter is, people are watching less TV on their
smart phone than one might think. People turn to tablets, computers, or
actual televisions for prolonged movie/video content. So yes, why would
anyone want a 4 inch Tv. The answer is, most people don't. haha.

And from a technological perspective, much isn't too much to ask for now a
day. but, there comes a point where consumers just rebel, and totally dismiss
certain notions. I mean, just look at it from a ergonomic view point. Have
you ever held an iPad for any length of time? Tell you what, after 20
minutes or so, you will start to notice the weight and mass of the thing.
Yes, one can use headphones or a bt headset to use with it when on calls but,
unless you just plan on being stationary for most calls, an iPad makes a poor
mobile phone in my opinion. So long story short, its doable, but, I don't
think very practical. At least not practical enough for most consumers to
 use comfortably.

Hi,

I'm not sure anyone said videos. Exactly. My words were prolonged video

My point was, people prefer to watch longer video content such as TV shows, and

and your phone is in your hand, of course, its just more expedient to do so.
If you add up all the hours of just video content consumed, I wouldn't be

Understood and agreed. I wasn't just responding to you, but the whole
thread, where it wasn't always clear to me at least what TV and video
was being referred to. As I said, I don't think people are going to want
to watch the Hobbit on their iPhone, but who knows!

BTW, I have seen people watch TV shows and movies on their iPhone/iPods.
My son for example, uses his NetFlicks app to watch TV on his iPod. They
may not always prefer to do it, but sometimes it's the only or the best
option. If people didn't do it or didn't' want to do it then NetFlicks
wouldn't bother with an iPhone app and ABC, Time Warner and other
companies wouldn't have their streaming apps.

As I think I stated before, I'm also not sure at all that there aren't
people out there who want to use their tablets as a phone. I think the
definition of phablet just got revised up to 6 inch devices, so I am not
sure at all that an 8 inch phablet isn't in our future. I say, if
there's a company out there that thinks it'll be successful, let them
put it out there, and we'll see if the market place accepts it or not.

2013-05-16 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi Chris.

Yup. I agree. Video is a major component of the smartphone experience. It
fills a void in our content hungry souls. haha. I guess what I'm saying is,
people watch TV or movies on smartphones because that's probably all they have
at the moment. For example, give your son an iPad, he will probably watch
Netflix on his iPad more than his iPod. Give your son a 42 inch smart HDTV, he
will probably prefer to watch Netflix on that TV than his iPad or iPod. haha.
But, Since we can't walk around with big screen TVs, we use whats handy. Thats
usually phones which most have at arms reach most if not all day.

Re: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-15 Thread Jane
Hi Raul.

I think you will love typing on the iPad Mini compared to the iPhone. Granted,
I haven't had an iPhone ever, but I had an iPod 4Th gen for a while before my
husband inherited it. I don't know how they did it, given the screen size, but
you'll be able to type almost like you do on a full-sized QWERTY

Good luck getting used to it; it probably will not take long, though. :)

Raul,

If you can stretch the budget a bit and want a really nice keyboard case
for the Mini, check out the Logitech Folio Keyboard case for the iPad
mini. I received mine a few days ago and it's fantastic. Logitech has
found a way to give you a full keyboard typing experience while still
keeping the small form factor of the Mini. Amazon has it for $79.99 via
Prime.

I just checked and looks like I ordered mine just in time because they
seem to be out of stock already.

waiting until June, November, whenever for the potential new device. Then,
if the changes are only in the screen and possibly upgrading the processor,
would you think it worth waiting or is the current device sufficient for

Re: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-15 Thread Ricardo Walker
Thats a tough one. You are smack in the middle of the refresh cycle, with the
iPad mini being released last November. I would say, if you are in no great
need of a tablet, you should wait if possible. I say this for 2 reasons, with
the more limited processor and RAM in the mini compared to the iPhone 5/4S, I
think Voiceover users might run into sluggish behavior with the current mini
once IOS 7 but, more likely 8 comes out. Now, I guess this really comes down
to what kind of life span your expecting from a tablet. For most, they will
expect about 2 years out of a phone. I would think a tablet might be closer to
3 years. Although I love my mini, I honestly can't see it lasting to run IOS
9. haha.

The second reason is, you can probably get a really, really, good deal on an
iPad mini when the new one comes out probably in the fall.

Re: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-15 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, I'm getting the 64 gb model. So, I don't think that one is $250.
However that is not a bad price for the 16gb model.

Hey folks. Just thought I'd share with the group that I'm getting an
iPad mini. Uncle Sam was generous this year with the tax return and so I
am able to afford one. It will help me in teaching others since that's
what I do for a living these days. Even though I can easily teach the
iPhone and iPod Touch because I have one, I have felt a bit like a
hypocrite when teaching the iPad since I didn't have one and could only
go by normal iOS usage and from reading things on how few things are
different. Now, I'll be able to teach for real as it were.

I'm also looking to the shifting of doing certain things on the iPad vs
the iPhone. I'm sure that will help my batteries on both devices.

Cheers.

Re: getting an iPad mini

2013-05-15 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi Eric, that is an excellent question. Since I can do this now and
since I'm ok with spending what I did on the current mini, I figured,
why not? Plus I really need it for training purposes. As for waiting, I
am taking that risk that something newer and better will come out in
June, making the current price point for them even less. However even if
something comes out in September/October/November, I don't want to wait
until then just to see what, if anything new and cool will be done with
the iPads. I feel this way about the iPhones as well.

Rick, thanks for that suggestion and link. It happens that I am a proud
Prime member. You are not the first to suggest it. I wish the reviews

Keyboard for tablets? In any case, it's looking good right now, even
more than the Zagg bluetooth keyboard case combo.
