I’ve been hooked on Perry since it came to MeTV and FeTV. Amazing, the number
of actors that appear in both. My favorite confession is by Dabbs Greer. “Yes,
I killed the big gas bag!” Priceless. His appearances include being a

Westerns, INSP Channel, Grit TV, Me TV, Antenna TV, FeTV. They all are airing
old westerns from the 50s/60s. You'd be surprised (or maybe not) at the number
of TAGS actors that show up in many series; Gunsmoke

to Hoyle), there's Tol Avery (Mr. Weaver in The Shoplifter), Jay Novello (That
was Mama! Mr. Mooney), and Leo Gordon (Luke Comstock coming to gun Andy down),
and as a bonus, Diane Brewster (Beaver's first teacher

I love Perry Mason and there's at least one TAGS actor in almost every episode.
A lot of the episodes had our Mr. O'Malley (Hey Chuck!) as the judge. I
thought he went to Detroit, not LA.

A bit of good news- On YouTube I have discovered some informational videos on
the many great character actors
appearing on TAGS- Allan Melvin, Reta Shaw, Burt Mustin and Hal Smith. Done
with much respect
and appreciation by "LandumC" - they are fun and informative!

Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland were mentioned in the episode called
The Rumor, season 4episode 29.
Rock Hudson was mentioned several times and also seen in a photo when
Barney was combing his hair.
Tony Curtis and Dale Robertson are mentioned in Off to Hollywood, season
6episode 7.
I love how Andy mentions Elvis without actually saying his name "That
guy singing on TV and jumping and shaking all over. Sounds like someone's
beating his dog."

Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man, you asked when Ferlin
Husky was mentioned.
In the episode Rafe Hollister Sings.
Barney says 'It's just honey and water. All the big singers use it. Nelson
Eddy, Tex Ritter, Ferlin Husky all of them use it.'

Thanks to all who corrected my error. I rushed my response and didn't think
about the Mayberry mayor being two separate characters. One position I

time the character appeared he was played by Keith Thibodeaux (aka Richard
Keith).

My wife and I watch Matlock every day. Around supper yesterday, I was watching
TAGS when she came in and commented on the fact Andy played such different
characters in the 2 shows. I explained it was the actor of the man.

were more than two actors who've portrayed Floyd?
The first actor to play Floyd was Walter Baldwin, but he couldn't cut it and
was replaced by the real Floyd, Howard McNear after just one episode. There
wasn't a third actor to play Floyd, but a stand-in (double) was used for Howard
Howard Hesseman became doctor Johnny Fever on WKRP. He appered twice on
TAGS, I believe.

I recall once seeing an interview with Ron Howard in which he was asked how he
made the transition from child actor to adult actor, a very rare feat in
Hollywood. His reply was that most child actors are never taught the art of

I was up early this morning watching a couple episodes of I Love Lucy, and

real ones because even though i recognize the names i cant allways put it

The first person who popped into my mind, as far as multiple roles, would be
Allan Melvin, who was credited with playing various heavies throughout the
series. Not sure how many without consulting my TAGS books, but he's
definitely in the running!

I wanted to submit a trivia question that had me thinking (yes with my
bucket on my head).
What actor/actress played the most different characters both credited and
uncredited on TAGS.
This is with the exception of Tom Jacobs who appeared in just about every
episode in the first few

showing up on other TV shows.
But I think this is probably a record, or at least ties for one.
Last night my wife and I watched a Bonanza episode titled The Trail Gang.
On this episode of Bonanza, there are THREE actors
Off the top of my head for TAGS actors on 'Matlock', I can think of Betty Lynn,
Pat Hingle, William Schallert, Jack Dodson, Arlene Golonka, Amzie Strickland,
Bo Hopkins, Aneta Corsaut, and Don Knotts. (Everett Greenbaum- the prolific
TAGS writer-played Judge Katz.)

sharing with us. When you feel ready to do so again, would you please tell us
about the wonderful actor, Jay Novello, if you have that info. He was in radio
making this imagination have great adventures in my own living
Thanks to Joe, Allan and Richard for the page on Joe Hamilton. Also, thanks to
Tom Kessel for getting more interest started in the character actors from
TAGS. As great as Andy Griffith and Don Knotts were, the show would have been
greatly lacking without the Howard McNear's, Hal Smith's, Joe
Howard, the insurance salesman (a different name, I'm sure) wasn't all that
different than Howard, the town clerk. Both were businesslike and competent.
I'd hire either of them.

I know that we've done comparisons of TAGS actors on Gomer Pyle, Dick
Van Dyke, Lucy and obviously Mayberry RFD...but has anyone ever tallied

I noticed some more TAGS actors on other shows over the weekend. Aunt Bee's
medicine man was on The Wild, Wild West along with that college kid , the
blonde that was in the show when Andy was on trial for malfeasance. Also saw
