No, Mayberry hadn't even been invented yet when Howard McNear made that
appearance on "Lucy." It's entirely possible, however, there were people who
worked on both shows who were friends
I once read an interview with Andy Griifith and he said what made
Floyd so funny to them, is because Howard McNear wasn't acting when he
portrayed Floyd-he was ACTUALLY like that.

I agree! It would be awesome to see Jack Benny on an episode of TAGS. Seeing
him get a ticket for speeding or jay-walking would be priceless.
I don't think I've ever seen Jack in a scene with Don Knotts. Does anyone know
if they ever acted together?

Not only did early radio and t.v. have an influence on TAGS, some of TAGS's

HistoryBuff, you are so right!
I always loved Floyd as a character - especially in the "Gay Deceiver" episode.
But as Howard McNear, I admire and love the man who had such professionalism
and courage to continue to contribute so much to our favorite show.

Dear Mayberry Folks,
I think we should not talk about Howard McNear's disability due to his stroke;
picking it apart step by step. Frankly, I don't think it is very nice.
We should remember what a dear man Howard and his character were. He was a

I may be a lone voice here, but I think Howard McNear did a darn fine job right
through his final TAGS episode. It bothers me to hear so much talk of how sad
and how poor his speech had become. Everything is relative, and maybe we should

That's a good question! You know, the guy who played Asa (and Fred?) did sound
quite a bit like Howard McNear. That's one of the most hilarious
scenes...almost as funny as the "Attaboy, Luther!" and "Attaboy, Judge!" from
"The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.&
I was watching "If I Had a Quarter-Million" and when Barney calls to
Fred in the hotel ("Fred!"), it sure sounds a lot like Howard McNear's
voice. Floyd was in the episode after all. Maybe Floyd had a brother
named Fred who worked at the hotel?

Tom Kessel mentioned "The Big Circus" with Howard McNear. Dave and I love

Hello all,
While browsing at our local library a few days ago I ran across a set of
audio tapes of classic radio shows. They looked interesting so I checked them
out. One episode of a show called Suspense featured DeForrest Kelly from Star
