With all the talk about cousins, I was under the impression and maybe
falsely that in the south, people sometimes refer to their friends by
calling them cousin in an endearing way. And even if they aren't related.
Well don't understand it, I sure don't understand it. Of course I don't fix

I know a lady that calls everyone her cousin. That goes for sisters of
in-laws, third cousin's uncle's wife, or husband's sister's daughter.
Whomever. We decided she is related to everyone in town.
And, wasn't Otis kin to Mr. Foley?

Growing up in the south we counted cousins1,2,3,4,5,6, Perhaps Barney and
Andy were third cousins which was considered close enough to call close
cousins, ( for us anyway) which could have given them a common grandmother
on Andy's mother's side which also would have changed the last name
Pam asked:
I was watching the first episode yesterday and I noticed how Barney referred to
Andy as his cousin. How are they cousins? Does anyone know?

Which one of Andy's and Barney's parents were kin (making Andy and Barney
cousins)? Well, for sure, Andy's father and Barney's father could not have
been brothers. If they were brothers, Andy and Barney would have had the same
last name. So it must have been brother-sister. Many, many time
Andy and Barney would have to be cousins on Andy's mother's side because in the
episode Aunt Bee's Invisible Beau Barney makes the remark, If Aunt Bee were
my aunt, I'd sure be more concerned about the situation (or something like
that). So since Aunt Bee is not Barney's aunt, Andy's mother
and/or uncles, and
therefore their children would be Opie's cousins.
Now here's another trivia question. In three early episodes, Andy and Barney
are said to be cousins. Assuming that they are first cousins, which of Andy's
parents is the sibling of which of Barney's parents? There are various clues
I have friends I've known for 50 years, and when the grandkids are around I

My first day in the first grade, I met a boy I'll call Roger. We became

she told me that Roger and I were distant cousins, somewhere

Thelma Lou (Janet), you're right, down here in Dixie we do use the word cousin
pretty loosely. If there's even a hint two folks might be related (say their
grandparents were all from the same county) there's a good chance those two
will jokingly call each other cousin.

Andy refered to Barney as his cousin 2 or 3 times early on, never after the
first season. But over the years, I have put on my thinking cap and I have
come to a few conclusions. Andy or Barney neither one said that they were
first cousins, but let's assume they were.

I surely don't mean to argue or dispute the conclusions of Paul, trained
noticer and fact-finder extraordinaire, but I myself imagine that Barney and
Ange just refer to themselves as cousins like lot of folks in small towns
do. They make reference in one episode about knowing one another since
in just the first few
episodes so maybe the writers decided they shouldn't actually be kin related
so they let it drop. We don't hear about them being related in later
seasons.

Now for my next question. How are Barney and Andy cousins? Aunt Bee

Aunt Bee, but so does everyone else in town. Does anyone know the answer? I
sure don't.
