Post Office References

2020-07-07 Thread Sandra Gore
I am sure this has been discussed before, but has there ever been an episode
that showed the inside of the Post Office? I have noticed that there are a lot
of episodes that mention the Post Office. Maybe that could be a challenge. List
episodes that mention the Post Office. Also, has anyone ever wondered how the
mail got delivered? I have seen episodes where Opie brings in a letter to Andy
at the courthouse before going off to school, Andy drops off a package for
Barney at the courthouse in the evening. I think I remember seeing a post man
in the episode with Mr. Wheeler, but I am not sure. Any thoughts?

I love how they incorporated references from the crew and actors' real

Myers, an assistant director on TAGS for that link. And in the last B/W episode
with Jerry Van Dyke, I have always loved the location Andy sends him to for the
job of school crossing guard. "Jerry, you go down to the corner of Rockford and
Haymore" And we all KNOW where that is. . Of course there's the Snappy
Lunch, Floyd's Barber Shop, actual businesses in Mt. Airy.

All these references...don't that just clutch ya?!?

Mayberry references

2019-10-06 Thread Janine L Johnson
Yesterday I experienced two Mayberry references in my tv watching. When
viewing that old movie Picnic, I heard the crowd at the event singing
Juanita in the background. Then later on the Lawrence Welk show, Arthur
Duncan tap-danced to the song the town choir sang that included the
words Voices Long Hushed (I don't know the title). So it was a nostalgic
day all around!!

A couple days before that I met a contractor who used to live in
Charlotte NC and the company he works for bought polyurethane materials
from Mt. Airy; he'd been there many times and professed his admiration
for the whole Mayberry concept; it was like having a reunion!

I was attending a local college Homecoming parade yesterday when I had a
perfect opportunity to infuse a quote from Barney.  The Homecoming parade was
very well attended and traffic (pedestrian and vehicular) was quite heavy
afterwards.  Many of the pedestrians were standing in the street after the
parade, so the vehicle traffic could not proceed.  I told a person working on

tell them..."Okay everybody!  Cease and disperse!"  We both had a good laugh

Biblical References

All the discussion about Biblical names in Mayberry brings to mind
something else regarding the Bible that the men folk of Mayberry would
really frown upon. I also doubt if Reverend Tucker would dare give a sermon

The bible very explicitly talks about how the men folk should help out with
the cooking. In fact an entire book of the Bible talks about how the
husbands and fathers in families should make the coffee.

It is the book of Hebrews.

Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 12, Issue 136, Message 6, moulage about improper references

2011-05-29 Thread Gary A. Johnson
I'm no lurker of this list, I watch, listen and read and then on those
observations, comment when I'm so moved.  Three weeks ago the reference to
turning air conditioning up/down was posted.  I Laughed Internally Loud (LIL)
when Paul Mulik mentioned the water heater reference below, something for which
I'm annoyed.  I know plumbers who squint when customers call to have their hot
water heater replaced.

My peeve since around the 5th grade is when good folk talk about buying a
home.
You don't buy a home.  If you do, you've been suckered into a realtor's
illusion
of what a wonderful place you can have, just for the mere buying price of $...

Since Paul endured his tragedy last Sunday, not even a week ago, he didn't lose
a home, he said he lost a house.  He lost a lot of what was in the house, but
as
he simply and adroitly stated, But that's just STUFF, and stuff in
unimportant.  I can always get more stuff later.  His home is still intact.
It's the same kind of spirit we find when we watch our show.  Home, faith,
love are rich words; you can't describe them simply, as something you just
nail together, happen upon or ride like you would Blackie.

In Barney, the Realtor, only once was the word home said and that was when
Andy welcomed the Sims the second time around.  Yet another way in the last 60
years marketing has developed in trying to influence us to part with our money
by selling a feeling.  If I'm selling, maybe that ain't so bad but Opie said
You mean that kids should be honest but grown-ups don't have to be?.  Thanks
to our show, we're reminded of values we cherish.

Glad that's no longer layin' on my chest...

Hear, hear!? That comment of Andy's has always annoyed me too.? If your
thermostat is set at say, 76, and you want it colder, you turn it DOWN, not
UP.?
Maybe years and years ago air conditioners were different?

Reminds me of car windows.? Have you ever wondered why we say roll down the
window?? You aren't rolling anything, the car window is a solid piece of
glass.? But 100 years ago, car windows (and before that, carriage windows) were
like window shades.? You rolled them down to close them, and rolled them up to
open them -- now it's backwards.

One more pet peeve: that big tank of water in your house is a water heater, not
a hot water heater.? You don't need to heat hot water, it's already hot!

Paul Mulik

It has always bugged me that people say turn up the A/C when

While not specifically mentioning Halloween, there are more episodes which
refer to it. One is at the end of Mayberry Goes Hollywood, when the townsfolk
are told to get out of those trick-or-treat outfits, and one other is in The

comical hat and tie, saying he's dressed for trick-or-treats. Seems like Opie
and Joey also mentioned the custom when they saw Barney wearing a dress in The

Halloween References

2009-10-31 Thread Mike
HI Gang!!!

There is another Halloween reference that I thought of when I first saw the
question and I waited to see if anyone mentioned it. It is the BOOKIE
BARBER episode when Barney puts on the ladies disguise to go place his bet.
When he steps out of the courthouse Opie and a friend walk by and tease him.
Opie says whatcha dressed up for Barney, TRICK OR TREAT

Oh, another observation for Tom. He mentioned Jenny the telephone operator
on the Lassie show being similar to Sarah as not seen. In fact she was
seen in many episodes. There was one episode where it was her birthday and
nobody seemed to notice so the townsfolk arranged a surprise by all of them
calling her at the same time to sing to her and then they went to her house
with gifts. That episode was on not long ago on the WHT channel. Often on
the show Lassie, Jeff or later Timmy would stop by her house to visit.
Another time when his dad needed help and Timmy couldn't get through because
of the party line gossips (similar to Maude and Cora), he sent Lassie to
Jenny's house with a note.

Re: A couple of Mayberry references

2006-11-20 Thread Dixonhayes
Even though they don't make TV like they used to, I still watch a lot of
modern day television. But you can imagine my surprise when I saw Desperate
Housewives last night, and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) was trying to convince a
skeptical police detective that a guy across the street was up to no good. She
eventually got frustrated and called him...you guessed it...Barney Fife.
That's definitely one place I never expected to hear a Mayberry reference.
(There *is* a Mayfield reference on Wisteria Lane, though: the Cleaver House is
in
the neighborhood.)

Did I mention the Mayberry reference in the movie trailer for the big screen
Reno 911: Miami? The deputy called Junior quips that riding the streets of
Reno is a lot like Mayberry, except everyone's on meth and prostitution is
legal.

Southern References on Andy

2006-08-14 Thread Joseph R. McSparin
There has been a lot of talk on all the things missing from TAGS that
wouldn't have been authentic Southern. If you think about the south in the
60's it was not our proudest era. The show never touched on race relations
either. I think they wanted the show to appeal to everyone. It was located
in North Carolina but they weren't trying to beat that part of the show into
the ground. I think Andy Griffith had a much more balanced view of the
south in the relation to our northern friends that is missing today.
Southerners today seemed to try to hard to make sure everyone knows there
from the south and we do things differently. Texas unfortunately seems to
be the worst about this and that is my home state. Even in Texas the
traditions between west Texans and east Texans are different and phrases are
different. I live in Fredericksburg and things here are way different than
the next town to the north which is Llano. There are several Llanoisms that
are not said here in Fredericksburg. I imagine all over the south that is
the case. There may have even been places in the south where sweet tea was
call called iced tea and coke was called pop.
