Another great program with a good amount of Mayberry folk - Tales of Wells
Fargo.
Just a few seen, "Thelma Lou; Brisco as both good and bad guys; John Masters;
Col. Harvey; The Man in a Hurry; Rev. Breen."
Most memorable was Gunsmoke with Ron Howard and James Best. James gave up his
life to save the lives of Matt and Ron. Hold On to Hope.Welford

In this part of Oklahoma, our cable system carries Antenna TV.I
don't know if you get it where you are, but at 9 P.M. central time, they show
old reruns of The Johnny Carson Show. On Monday night they showed the one
from November 19, 1980.In one of the early segments, Johnny was talking
about things that have names that very few people know. For instance, the
plastic tip on shoe laces is called an aglet. Then he asked if anyone knew
what they called the plaster of paris that law enforcement uses to pick up
footprints.A woman in the audience yelled out "Moulage".Johnny said
"Right, how did you know that?" The woman yelled out "I watch the Andy
Griffith Show".Fans are everywhere, even in 1980.

{Spam?} Gunsmoke on TAGS

2023-10-27 Thread m white
TAGS fans,
If you're interested in hearing the Gunsmoke radio episode where John Dehner
plays a seller of patent medicine (much like his Colonel Harvey character on
TAGS), look for the episode from Nov 14, 1953 titled "Professor Lute Bone".
There are several places on-line where you can listen to or even download
Gunsmoke episodes. Howard McNear has a good part in the episode as Doc and, of
course, Parley Baer is Chester.

TAGS fans,
Was listening to a "Gunsmoke" radio drama from 1953. Doc (Howard McNear) was
all upset when Matt got back into Dodge because there was a man peddling a
miracle elixir cure that contained opium. The "Professor" peddling the miracle
cure was played by John Dehner, who of course was still peddling miracle cures
a hundred years or so later in Mayberry as Colonel Harvey! Let's just say
Mayberry was much more friendly to him than Dodge.
Then, in the next episode, Matt went up against an army deserter and suspected
murderer played by James Best, aka the Guitar Player Jim Lindsey.
And having listened now to the first two seasons of Gunsmoke on radio, Howard
McNear is listed as one of the stars but John Dehner, who is on more episodes,
is only ever listed as a guest star.

Too funny…story about what if Don Knotts had shown up on Dick Van Dyke Show
instead of Danny Thomas? If you’ve never seen “It may look like a walnut”
episode on The DVD Show, the rest of this will go right over your head (quote
Barney).

Danny Thomas Popped up on the "Dick Van Dyke Show’s Classic "Walnut" Episode on
ME TV Well, what if Barney Fife had shown up Instead?
Incredible as that sounds, this blurb from the September 22, 1962 edition of
the syndicated "TV Scout" newspaper column contains the tantalizing suggestion
that Carl Reiner may have at least toyed with the idea of involving both Don
Knotts AND Andy Griffith in an earlier draft of his classic sci-fi parody. I
suspect it was a fleeting notion that was soon forgotten. Or perhaps last
minute schedule issues forced an eleventh hour rethink that prompted Danny
Thomas to step into the role? Either way, breathes there a fan of either series
who wouldn't pay a considerable sum to see Deputy Barney go toe to toe with Rob
Petrie, armed only with a sack of walnuts!
Here's the text of that item as it appeared in newspapers on September 22, 1962:
TV SCOUT September 22, 1962
The cast of The Dick Van Dyke Show is talking about a particularly wild episode
Carl Reiner has written for the show’s second season.
“According to what I have heard,” Mary Tyler Moore told TV Scout, “Dick has a
dream in which everyone looks like a walnut and talks like Andy Griffith or Don
Knotts. We’ll either win an Emmy for the show, or they’ll put Carl Away
Permanently.”

This past Friday I had the honor and privilege of doing my Mayberry

had been 20 months since I last presented. This presentation was the 95th

told us that he had been organizing senior events at churches for the past
fifteen years, and this was the largest crowd he has had. So I think that
speaks volumes about the interest that seniors have in TAGS and Mayberry.
The group was so engaging, and we had so much fun. They loved it when I
brought out two bottles of Colonel Harvey's Indian Elixir ( one empty ) and
I accused our assistant pastor of spiking the apple cider. This morning was
our coffee group, and this group continued Friday's enthusiasm with many
questions and comments for me. Such fun.

I’ve been hooked on Perry since it came to MeTV and FeTV. Amazing, the number
of actors that appear in both. My favorite confession is by Dabbs Greer. “Yes,
I killed the big gas bag!” Priceless. His appearances include being a
murderer, victim and an innocently accused. He pulls off a drunk act that could
easily rival Otis Campbell on a bad night.

Bavier is in one, and bless her heart, she’s not accused or the killer, unlike
when she’s in a western. That toughened up “warden” style in her really shines
as a bad gal. Ruta Lee is in several as well as Sue Ane Langdon and Julie
Adams. Julie starts out being sent to prison to await execution (Perry loses)
and is quite afraid of Wednesdays, 10AM to be exact, as most take place at that
time and day. Perry pulls off his usual tricks, shutting down “Immaterial,
incompetent and irrelevant” objections. Guess when she’s released.. Yep.,. A
Wed. at 10AM.

TAGS CHARACTERS on other shows

2020-12-09 Thread Michael Eury
I always enjoy spotting TAGS actors on other series, and enjoy reading
folks' comments here when they spot them too. It's hard to see, say, Denver
Pyle on PERRY MASON and not think, "Hey, there's Briscoe Darling!"

But we're talking about the actors, not the characters themselves, so that
got me "thankin'" (without a bucket over my head):

How many times did TAGS *characters* (Sheriff Taylor, Deputy Fife, Opie,
etc.) actually appear on other TV shows?

Off the top of my head: We start with Andy and Opie on THE DANNY THOMAS
SHOW (the TAGS pilot). Then Goober, Aunt Bee, and Opie guest-starred on
GOMER PYLE, USMC (did I miss any Mayberry guest?). And it's been a while
since I saw HEE HAW, but didn't George Lindsey play Goober there from time
to time?

Then there were parodies of TAGS characters, like Don Knotts as the lawman
of "Juneberry" when he guest-starred on THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MOVIES Saturday
morning cartoon.

Just goes to show you the far-reaching influence of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW
and Mayberry's beloved citizens?

Can y'all think of any others?

>From the Mayberry-like New Bern, NC,

I happened to watch an episode of "The Twilight Zone" the other night and saw 8

(season 4/episode 12) from 1963. It starred our very own Howard Morris (Ernest

from Ernest T.). It is interesting that his name in the episode is very close
to the NC governor who came to Mayberry in "The Cannon" episode, whose name was
George C. Handley.

Other TAGS characters appearing include:

Jack Albertson (cousin Bradford J. Taylor)
Mark Miller (temporary deputy Bob Rogers)
Ben Astar (Mr. Vasilievich the Russian at the summit meeting)
James Millhollin (Arnold Finch the money counterfeiter)
Joyce Jameson (Skippy the fun girl)
Robert Ball (Mr. Oldfield the Bargain Supermarket store manager)
Molly Dodd (Nate Bracey's wife in "Class Reunion")

And speaking of "The Twilight Zone," can anyone tell me how many times it was
mentioned on TAGS and which episode(s)?

Guns on TAGS

2020-07-21 Thread Joe
Elizabeth B. asked last week about the episodes where guns are prominent.
She mentioned the one where Andy points a gun at Goober in anger. This
pointing of guns at people is something that has always surprised me on
TAGS. The very first "commandment" of gun safety is to assume that every
gun is loaded, and to never point a gun at anyone. Yet there are several
episodes where guns are pointed directly at people.

Besides Elizabeth's example, there's the one where Uncle Ollie is in the
courthouse, takes a rifle, and points it at Andy. And in "Andy the
Matchmaker", Barney points his gun directly at Andy's face, and then
directly at a prisoner. I know there are other examples, but these two come
to mind right away.

A little surprising - and to me, different than the ongoing gag of Barney
accidentally firing his revolver into the floor.

In High Noon in Mayberry, when Andy is listening to the footsteps leading to
the door. The doorbell buzzer tone was timed by someone - probably Paul (the
real Mayberry guru) Mulik, I don't remember how long the tone is held but long
enough to be counted as a "silent moment".

PS - Anyone notice how often Leo Gordon (Luke Comstock) appears in TV Westerns?
From good guy to bad guy he's everywhere, practically in every single western
series made for TV. Also, Mr. McBeeve (Karl Swenson) appears often enough to
rival Leo's appearances. Mostly Karl is sporting a beard and hard to recognize
until he speaks.

Considering TAGS premeired in 1960 and B.H. didn't premerie until 1962, there
were several seasons before the famous phrase was used. Holywood had plenty of
time to come up with incorporating it as a friendly gesture to busines patrons
long before the rednecks turned city folk waved at the camera.

And before any of you start using it here, it's plural, NEVER singlular...the
contraction of "You all". A poet wrote this, not me. All you folks from other
parts, both city folks and rural. Come listen here, I got the word and the word

The scene in the Christmas episode where Opie's hair is full of static has
always made me laugh.
Opie is also pulling his gloves off by using his teeth just like a little
kid.

Woohoo Tuttle's is back. JL-327 is the tag number for the squad car.

Matthew McConaughey's new commercial for Lincoln does have a reference to
TAGS.
The theme song for TAGS is playing, plus he is fishing. Ice-fishing, but
still fishing.
I saw the commercial while watching the Winter Classic, ice-hockey, on New
Year's day.

At one time they say Andy's favorite dish is leg of lamb.
Then in another episode it is fried chicken.

Hope everyone had a good holiday.

Have a Mayberry kind of day.

Elizabeth, I think that might turn me off of apples too. A little goes a
long way and too much can kill an appetite for good. I'll email you the
recipe :)

~

And for anyone wondering about Matthew's comment - he's the new owner of a
couple of my TAGS buildings. Yes, they do look beautiful all lit up. You
almost expect to see Andy and Barney moving about inside.

Speaking of the inside of Mayberry businesses - We've seen many scenes of
the outside of Wally's, including the attached repair garage but do we ever
really see the inside of the gas station? Like Gomer behind the counter.
Anyone recall inside shots?

TAGS Christmas Episode

2019-12-22 Thread LGillum
The house settled in peace before the friendly fire.  Room lights were
softened to mellow nuances, punctuated by miniature points of
incandescence across sparkling rows of evergreen garlands along the
fireplace mantel.  Our Christmas tree twinkled majestically and
magically, brighter than ever, with a comforting angel presiding
overhead.   Telephones were silenced and the dog was not allowed to
bark.   All eyes were now focused on Channel 248, MeTV.   A gentle
tranquility spread over the domain, and there they were -- our Mayberry
friends and family -- sharing Christmas joy and love with Scrooge Ben
Weaver.   Santa appeared in Barney's unlikely image, kindling fervent
imaginations and memories from my own distant childhood.  Emotions
swelled as Miss Ellie and Andy sang their simple but angelic rendition
of "Away in a Manger."   And lo, it was suddenly Christmas in Mayberry.
And consequently, thankfully, thoughtfully, Christmas had arrived in my
little corner of the world.    And lo, it is Christmas once again.   God
bless us all, everyone.

Top 5 TAGS moments

2019-10-14 Thread Joe
Matt,

Thanks for starting the discussion about the Top 5 emotional TAGS moments -
hard to disagree with yours, or any of the others mentioned. It just goes
to show, once again, how great writing and acting made TAGS such a classic,
memorable show.

One of my favorites is the end of "Opie's Hobo Friend", first when Opie
asks Buddy Ebsen, his hobo friend, if he really stole Aunt Bee's purse -
then left behind the fishing lure that Buddy had given him. The look on
Opie's face, and Buddy's avoiding looking at Opie, or answering him, are
moving scenes.

Then, when Andy lets Buddy go to catch the train, and they look at each
other without saying much directly - that is some great acting too.

Top TAGS Moments

2019-10-12 Thread Harriet Browder
Me too, Matt. Those are precious moments.

The end of "Opie the Birdman" is one of my favorites, when he releases all
three. My mom was the lady in the neighborhood whom kids would bring baby
birds to that had fallen out of the nest or a cat got mama. We had probably
a couple dozen or so wild birds of differing types over the years taking up
residence in an old parakeet cage on a coffee table. One day when I was
about 5 I forgot a recovering cardinal was on my shoulder and I walked
outside. Of course he found freedom and that was the end of that but I cried
for a long time about losing "My baby bird" when my mom wouldn't climb the
tree to bring him back.

Matthew,I agree with your list, but I'd add a 1a: From "The Cow Thief" when
Barney brings up another crazy idea that another Mayberry mayor had, Andy
hiring him as his deputy.  Somehow, that just brings home the deep friendship
and loyalty between the two. I always get a catch in my throat when I watch
that scene!

My top 5 TAGS moments that get to me

2019-10-11 Thread Matthew Anderson
Here are my top 5 moments from the show that make me tear up a little or
get me a little emotional.

1.Andy on Trial-When Barney defends Andy by saying "This is a small town."

2.The Song Festers-When Gomer sees Barney softly singing the song inside
the vacant .
 performance room.

3. Barney and the Cave Rescue-When Thelma Lou and Helen say that Barney is
quite a guy after he becomes the hero in the rescue.

4.Man in a Hurry-(my favorite episode by the way)-when Malcolm Tucker
starts to leave after his
car is fixed and he looks at the faces of all those that are saying
goodbye. Also the end shot of
him falling asleep with the peeled apple core in his hand.

5. Floyd the Gay Deceiver-When Floyd watches the lady drive away and
admires her so much.
Andy in turn sees how much this means to Floyd.

One additional-The Christmas Story-Ben Weaver singing Away in a Manger from
the outside
 looking in.
