Throw web standards to the winds and it will be just that much more
work to clean back up when you want to support a new device you didn't
expect would come on the market.

I added a notes to

[Bug 18832] New: Alternative sitenotice accessibility for users with limited JavaScript support

2009-05-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18832

Summary: Alternative sitenotice accessibility for users with
limited JavaScript support
 Product: Wikimedia
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Keywords: accessibility
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Site requests
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: jida...@jidanni.org

I hereby file this _long term wishlist_ placeholder bug in the hopes
that you will _someday_ make the most important message of Wikipedia,
the message that you put on the top of the page, on every page, agree
with
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Accessibility#Users_with_limited_CSS.2FJavaScript_support

It doesn't matter how you implement it, just be sure to give the rest of
the users some hint that there is something they should be aware of,
that there is something happening.

You could even have a noscript that won't go away until they click
in their preferences that I am aware I should subscribe to [some
announcement list or whatever].

Otherwise throughout the year there is not one peep for us of all your
activities, your Wikimainias, your fundraisers, etc. Other users know
of all the great parties, whilst we are back at the dorm wondering
where everybody is.

Well the lock-wait-timeout has got nothing to do with the slaves, it's just a
traffic jam on the master. It should still be possible to read stuff if
necessary: it manages to render the rest of the skin ok. Of course, that might
not be the case on systems with a single database, but even then, as you say,
the message should be memcached.

OK, I verified that
Note: As of August 20, 2008 new tables created by using the Wikipedia
table button include border=1 and so they do not have this problem.
on
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Table#Viewing_tables_in_email_and_web_pages_outside_Wikipedia
is true.

Perhaps a bot could be made to repair the earlier bad tables.

But how could it tell which tables were intentionally without borders.

You see all the regret that is caused by not following standards, and
now there is no easy way to back out nor stop shipping MediaWiki with
the dangerous borders in the table CSS.

All we can say is if a user encounters a table that he cannot read,
(assuming he can even tell it was supposed to be a table in the first
place), he should feel free to add a border, unless he encounters a
!--no border on purpose! -- comment.

Perhaps add a warning in skins/common/shared.css

Closing this bug.

Oh but we are following standards, just not the same type as you. We mostly
follow the W3C standards where it's recommended that page content only should
be in the HTML/PHP ect files and styling should be seperated and stored in a
seperate file using CSS.

Show me one HTML tables tutorial that says it is cool to put border=
only in CSS. Anyway, never mind that. Instead lets turn to how to
clean up the pre 8/2008 damage.

Wait a second. Couldn't there be a bot that marches through Wikipedia,
and every time it encounters class wikitable not followed by a border
statement, it could add border=1, fully confident that as it is a
class wikitable, its author intends to have borders. One could always put a
border=0
or whatever to avoid the bot, but that would be a very devious class
wikitable table.

Or they could simply sst a switch that does that by default unless a user
specifies something specific, which is what they did. I don't think new
devices will ever ba a problem, because a new text-based browser will recognize
media=tty and thus allow us to style CSS specifically for it.

[Bug 17806] Specific log for revision deletions

I agree with Cenarium here. Deleting a page has effects other than the
appearance in the deletion log -- red links appear, diff links fail to work,
etc. RevisionDelete, on the other hand, is far more silent -- you can only
tell the action has been taken by viewing the individual revision or by viewing
the log. Therefore the log is far more important for transparency and
prevention of abuse. These (important) functions would be helped by a separate
log, as normal deletions are of such volume that revision deletions will be
swamped.

--- Comment #3 from FT2 ft2.w...@gmail.com 2009-05-18 09:02:49 UTC ---
But removal of data (by any means) is only ever a problem if something is
hidden that shouldn't have been hidden, and something is only hidden (in this
sense) at a point where a user would have seen it but for the action taken.

(ie, a redaction of (say) an edit summary that nobody has ever looked at anyway
isn't making any difference; it's a potential problem only at the point someone
looks at the record and /would/ have seen it but now cannot/will not.)

With RevDel, at that point the user can always (without fail) know that
material has been hidden and any user who should be able to check it was
correctly hidden, can do so.

Additional observation -- The logic you're suggesting also has a major flaw.
It's fine for full page deletion. But the delete log also has revision deletion
by normal admin delete (full delete + restore all but N revisions). Those are
far more silent, create no redlinks, etc, and yet no separate log has ever
been suggested as essential for those.

--- Comment #5 from Sam Korn sam.k...@gmail.com 2009-05-18 09:14:41 UTC ---
FT2 is arguing that oversight of the use of this tool should be entirely
reactive. I disagree -- it should be possible to perform proactive oversight.

The argument about deletion-selective undeletion is, I think, somewhat
specious. It would have been impossible to log those events without a new
functionality that does the whole action at once -- which is what
RevisionDelete is. The need for the delete-undelete method has been obviated
by the superior RevisionDelete system; my argument is that that system can be
further improved by the provision of a separate log.

I don't see any benefits of the combined log; there are significant benefits to
a separate log.

What do you know, the same patchfile worked on Modern.php
# patch Modern.php patchfile
patching file Modern.php
Hunk #1 succeeded at 112 with fuzz 2 (offset -25 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 137 (offset -25 lines).

CologneBlue doesn't array content_actions in the first place, so it's
already an even playing field, for better or worse. Same for Standard
and Nostalgia.

Chick, MySkin, Simple all inherit from MonoBook

Be very careful that you are sure that the strong and em I am
using here are the best choices for the job. As the em will then
become the basis for treating all the redlinks in the entire wiki,
upon the day we decide that we should go further and do something to
distinguish them for those whose browsers can't see red, etc., for not
only those links around the edges of the page we are dealing with
today, but for all the page content too.

* Need to change rollbacklink in language files to rollback {{PLURAL:$1|1

* Since function buildRollbackLink() now may return false, we need to account

proposed patch

Maybe this patch would help. It also adds how many unreaded messages you have
in the notification.

Adding Title::getPreviousRevisionIDAtOffset() is of no use, since we've got
Revision::getPrevious() already. Also, there's only one entry per user in the
user_newtalk table AFAIK, so returning the number of entries is useless as well
in that case.

Also, instead of using the 'newmessage' and 'newmessages' messages, you should
use .

Currently the sysops can assign the group abusefilter. This should allow them
full access to the controls. Is this not working properly then? Also are all
other conflicts resolved? (I am really not sure what this bug is lacking.)

The requested changes have been made and pushed live to the cluster. If there
are any questions or concerns, please let me know. Normally I would require
some kind of vote page for this, but Brion reassigned it to me directly so I
assume the changes are ok to make.

Dear Rob, This bug is to **request** the Abusefilter on nl-Wikipedia, with the
settings as requested in the description I wrote. Currently nl-wikipedia does
not have the abusefilter.

In the request, we explicitly do not want sysops to be able to assign the the
group abusefilters, we want bureaucrats to be able to do that.

There are no other conflicts, this request is a community consensus.

[Bug 18836] New: Special:Log to include useful groupings of logs

2009-05-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary: Special:Log to include useful groupings of logs

 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Special pages
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ft2.w...@gmail.com

As the number of features grows, the list of logs at Special:Log has also
grown. It currently includes some 18 logs with some omitted (oversight) and
others proposed for addition (eg bug 17806). This availability of data is good
but has a difficult side; users checking out editing issues now have to check
several logs on any given point, to be sure they are seeing the full story.

This comes to a head with deletion where a deletion might be in any of the
delete, suppress, oversight, or (proposed) revdel, logs. Or indeed have
actually been a page move, perhaps with move log redaction or username
suppression.

I would like to suggest that the dropdown list of logs be enhanced, to help
handle this.

Here are 2 ways this might be done in the interface. In the first, the dropdown
box is still one long list, but has groups highlighted in the list. In the
second, there is a dropdown for log category and then a second box to select
the log (or all) within that category.

As an aside, also simplify to all logs; if the user can't see a log, then
just don't have the log listed or show results from it.

Adding Title::getPreviousRevisionIDAtOffset() is of no use, since we've got
Revision::getPrevious() already. Also, there's only one entry per user in the
user_newtalk table AFAIK, so returning the number of entries is useless as

There is an entry for every edit for user's talk page. At least that's what in
user_newtalk in my local db. So, there will be one entry or more, so i don't
think that Revision::getPrevious() would help me that much.

Also, instead of using the 'newmessage' and 'newmessages' messages, you should
use .

This could be done, but after reviewing the patch to see if it can be committed
to the trunk or thrown in the trash :).

Those two aren't related. My point is that you're duplicating code from
Revision::getPrevious() to Title::getPreviousRevisionIDAtOffset() for no good
reason. To get the previous revision ID for a certain revision ID you should
really just create a Revision object for it (if you don't have one already)

[Bug 18838] New: Invalid id and name generated for Russian header element

2009-05-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18838

Summary: Invalid id and name generated for Russian header element
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
 URL: http://ru.wikifur.com/
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: minor
 Priority: Normal
Component: Page rendering
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: greenrea...@hotmail.com

Some pages with MediaWiki-rendered headers fail to validate using the W3C
validator service, because the names and IDs created are invalid. For example:
a name=.D0.A1.D1.82.D0.B0.D1.82.D1.8C.D0.B8
id=.D0.A1.D1.82.D0.B0.D1.82.D1.8C.D0.B8/ah2 span class=mw-headline
Статьи /span/h2

These generated attributes are not even correct in HTML, which specifies that:
'ID and NAME tokens must begin with a letter ([A-Za-z]) and may be followed by
any number of letters, digits ([0-9]), hyphens (-), underscores (_), colons
(:), and periods (.).'
http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/types.html#type-id

One possible solution is to add a standard letter prefix to headers when the
first character is outside the range [A-Za-z]. Stripping the first . is not a
solution, as hexadecimal number strings may start with a decimal number (e.g.
82 in the above string).

This is due to image thumbnailing of very large non-JPEG images frequently
breaking and taking down the whole site's thumbnailing service. In the future
we'd like to have better thumbnailing of huge images but this is dependent on
new infrastructure.

I'm pretty sure we deliberately don't use the site-customized messages in the
DB error since by definition if our DB access is broken it may not be safe to
pull from the DB. You don't necessarily know what the problem was or what
further attempts to access the backend might cause. Probably not worth the
effort of poking at it, but we can LATER it for prettification.

The LIMIT=1 was added in r9211 in 2005...

Revision::fetchAllRevisions() appears to be unused, and well it should be
unused as it would work very poorly on large pages. :)

Probably best fix is to kill the bad function.

Suggest enabling this feature by default. It should be useful on most sites and
not too expensive except for the largest ones.

For DefaultSettings.php:

/**
* Show rollback link as rollback 3 edits instead of just rollback, to

* if too expensive for larger wikis.

$wgShowRollbackEditCount = true;

As noted in CR on r50635, this is duplicated code -- a check for three
different items is now duplicated into at least three places, making it likely
that they'll get out of sync in future development. This should be refactored
into a single function which can be called and updated consistently in the
future.

The check and report code is duplicated in four places, which always makes me

Perhaps the check should be centralized, if it's common to all our submissions?

Should the number listed be exact or approximate?

If exact, the query is going to more expensive.

If approximate, then how to reflect that the count is an estimate? Setting the
count to 10+ may break localization and apparently breaks .

[Bug 18839] New: Misleading text/layout in RevisionDelete

2009-05-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18839

 Summary: Misleading text/layout in RevisionDelete
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: Deleting
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ft2.w...@gmail.com

w:Special:Undelete/User:DingmanDelaware has the text of 2 edits removed
using RevDeleted (defamation) with Suppress data from administrators
selected.

1/ The way the revisions are listed under Page History is misleading or
confusing for oversighters:
 (del/undel) (diff) sTIMESTAMP/s . . USER
since it would look the same whether or not admins could view the material.

2/ The revision and diff are headed by a note (This page revision has been
removed from the public archives. As an administrator you can view it...). The
note suggests access is available to any admin.

The problem in both cases is an oversighter can't be quickly sure if the
revision is visible to admins or suppressed (it would look the same whether or
not administrators could view it).

But HideUser is also related, more so to 'oversight' than to blocking, which
is where it currently goes.

Yes, HideUser is a revision deletion feature.

Which is a tad confusing, unless one knows that ahead of time. However, I'm not
sure what would be better without something long that wouldn't fit. Marking
this as invalid since the links aren't the same.

I mean can you be more specific about what you put where to get the effect:
it sounds to me like you put a line
in wiktext I have:

** Home|Home
** Start|Start
** Navigation|Navigation
** Übersicht|Uebersicht
** Übersicht|Übersicht
** Staff|Staff

in html I have
div class='pBody'
 ul
 li id=n-Homea href=/index.php/HomeHome/a/li
 li id=n-Starta href=/index.php/StartStart/a/li
 li id=n-Navigationa href=/index.php/NavigationNavigation/a/li
 li id=n-Uebersichta
href=/index.php/%C3%9CbersichtUebersicht/a/li
 li id=n-.C3.9Cbersichta
href=/index.php/%C3%9CbersichtÜbersicht/a/li
 li id=n-Staffa href=/index.php/StaffStaff/a/li

I added the line '** Übersicht|Übersicht' just to reproduce the bug.

in MediaWiki:Sidebar, and you fixed it by replacing the Ü with Ue. Is
that right?
Yes

thx

When he is not traveling, we can hammer this out. Sorry for the delay.

[Bug 15274] Make google:foo bar use + or %20 for href, not an underline after parsing; further do not capitalize

2009-05-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #5 from Splarka h...@goldrush.com 2009-05-18 21:25:49 UTC ---
Accordingly the fix would seem to be to have the software stop translating
spaces into underscores, but to leave them as spaces when searching.

Interwikis are meant for wikis, converting these to spaces for all interwikis
would break the valid usages. m:Spam blacklist would link to
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Spam+blacklist which isn't correct. Having just
certain interwikis not do it would be creating something different than
interwiki, like interwebsite. I think the solution is to remove broken
interwikis like google and the toolserver.

Or, you can trick the code into plus-delimiting with fullurl (not any easier
than just an external link though):

[{{fullurl:google:|q={{urlencode:{} {}]

Ok, this should be working now. I was confused until I realized I stupidly
confused this ticket with a similar ticket for nlwikibooks, and thus half
enabled abuse filter for each project.

Its all fixed, it should work. I have not enabled any actual filters yet.
