[Bug 25972] WikiEditor crashes on Pasting

--- Comment #4 from ad...@juniorwiki.org 2011-01-12 09:03:20 UTC ---
I understand: there were four loving people who were not too keen on caring
about their work? Do I get that right?

Honestly, thanks for pointing me to the right direction, although the problem
is not to be solved. And sad to hear that the work spent on stabilizing still
leads to some problems, at least for some users. I turned the toc off, now the
browser doesn't crash anymore. I'm lowering priority to normal.

But two problems still exist. The first is that when pasting the editor adds
lots of white-spaces, about 2 per line. And the second is that all the breaks
within the pasted text get lost, no matter what origin it comes from
(notepad++, wiki). When pasted into the WikiEditor, there will be only one
(huge) section.

If you had another useful hint to get along with that, I would be grateful.

Isn't this issue limited to the Main page ? The main page probably has some
special casing for the title. A MediaWiki message taking precedence ?

[Bug 26692] New: Properties should be parsed by SMW before being used as input for other extensions

2011-01-12 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26692

Summary: Properties should be parsed by SMW before being used
as input for other extensions
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Semantic MediaWiki
AssignedTo: mar...@semantic-mediawiki.org
ReportedBy: cre...@gmail.com
CC: jeroen_ded...@yahoo.com

Extensions using parser function hooks receive the raw wikitext.

To reproduce:

Wiki page: SampleAudioFilePage:

{{TestDoc
|HasAudioFile
}}

Wiki page: Template:TestDoc:

{{#widget:Html5media|url={{{HasAudioFile}}} }} (Widget extension)
player{{{HasAudioFile}}}/player (Player extension)

Result of viewing SampleAudioFilePage:

Extensions fail to locate asset and report an error. At the code level, the
extension's hooked function will contain the raw template wikitext
{{{HasAudioFile}}} instead of the expected page value sample.mp3.

Expected results:

The value sample.mp3 should be passed as the extension's input.

Where are you copying the content from? We built a copy-paste matrix at one
point, identifying the behavior of copying from various sources on various
platforms to various browsers. There were lots of issues around copying from
rich text editors like Wordpad, Microsoft Word, etc. and into some but not all
browsers. I don't recall firefox being the most stubborn of these, but you may
have hit on a problem combination. Also, pasting is much more reliable with the
Navigable Table of Contents module turned off (with the textarea rather than
iframe implementation).

[Bug 26663] Request for selecting a portion of media for playback

--- Comment #2 from Michael Dale d...@ucsc.edu 2011-01-12 18:06:22 UTC ---
We did originally work on getting oggz_chop ( server side video segmentation)
integrated on Wikimedia but ultimately were not successful in integration
because of scalability concerns. We were successful in helping get it
integrated at InternetArchive.org see a blog post I wrote about the feature a
while back http://metavid.org/blog/?p=191

What can easily add to the Timed Media Handler is http based seeks. This would
seek to the start time then stop at the end time ( but the browser would buffer
more than it needs since there is presently no way in the HTML5 spec to stop
the video from buffering ). But it would be a good start, and depending on how
the temporal url standard develops and the amount of time and interest we can
upgrade the http based seek system to better handle start / end times.

Will update this bug once I have the feature in the TimedMediaHandler code

 Seems to WFM on trunk...

So it's a bit weird whether it's a 1.16 issue (will be fixed with release of
1.17), or a WMF site config issue..
I know this behavior to be hard-coded, and I remember seeing the revision that
fixed it (although I don't remember exactly where in the code or the rev that
fixed it).

Closing WFM.

[Bug 26381] Special:BannerController breaks all JS on live site

--- Comment #6 from Lupo lupo.bugzi...@gmail.com 2011-01-12 21:30:55 UTC ---
JavaScript crash in FF 3.6.4. Observed while visiting the Commons in
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100611
Firefox/3.6.4, may possibly also occur in other browsers.

The crash occurs during $j(document).ready() and prevents later document-ready
handlers from running at all.

FF error console reports:

uncaught exception: [Exception... Component returned failure code: 0x805e000a
[nsIXMLHttpRequest.open] nsresult: 0x805e000a (unknown) location: JS
frame :: http://bits.wikimedia.org/skins-1.5/common/jquery.min.js?283-19 ::
anonymous :: line 383 data: no]

This appears to be caused by the call on lines 54-58 in
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:BannerController

var request = $.ajax( {
url: bannerListURL,
dataType: 'json',
success: $.centralNotice.fn.chooseBanner
} );

The bannerListURL at the time of the call is

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:BannerListLoadercache=/cn.jslanguage=enproject=commonscountry=

and returns

[]

which is not a JSON object but an empty array. Maybe that's got something to do
with this. Can't verify myself since I cannot step though minified jquery code;
I did get to this $.ajax() call with single-stepping, though.
$.centralNotice.fn.chooseBanner is never called; the exception is therefore
raised earlier inside the $.ajax() call.

The error appears not to depend on the skin, at least it occurs in both
monobook and in vector.

Visit
api.php?action=threadactionmethod=talkpage_new_threadthreadaction=inlineeditformtoken=%2B%5Cformat=json
(requires POST, I think, so to test this type $.post('/w/api.php?.'); in
the Firebug console) and you'll get ta fatal error. This request normally has a
talkpage= parameter, and when it's present everything works just fine.

These requests are sometimes generated when clicking the New section tab on a
talk page (could only reproduce when logged out on prototype.wikimedia.org/d-en

to have no mechanism to either check it's sending correctly formed request or
to handle errors.

Some methods, such as wfProfileIn(), wfProfileOut() don't really add much to a
lot of the call graphs, and end up making them a lot more complex

Being able to blacklist methods from inclusion would be really useful

Currently when you visit an article page you can only see if any discussion was
started or not. It would be more efficient if I could see whether any new
replays or topics where made since my last visit to the talk page (if I'm
logged in) and it could be indicated with a star or something. Note that this
is something most reasonable dashboard has.

As I'm aware the above might be very resource consuming and maybe not the most
import thing... The main thing I'm proposing here is an indicator of how many
unanswered topics are there on the talk page. This info could be easily cached
and update upon creation of a new topic and reply to the topic. It could be
displayed as a number in brackets on the talk tab (with a span title saying
what this number mean).

[Bug 26701] New: Passing URLs to templates via #show or #ask causes formatting problems

formatting problems
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Semantic MediaWiki
AssignedTo: mar...@semantic-mediawiki.org
ReportedBy: dan.bol...@gmail.com
CC: yaro...@gmail.com, jeroen_ded...@yahoo.com

Assuming you have a simple template called 'url' with the following wikitext:

* [{{{2}}} {{{1}}}]

Calling the template within an ask works fine. e.g.

{{#ask: [[Some pages]] | ?Some url type property
 | format=template | template=url }}

However, a very similar 'explicit' call fails to be formatted correctly. e.g.
on 'Some page':

{{url | {{PAGENAME}}
 | {{#show: {{PAGENAME}} | ?Some url type property | link=none }} }}

fails to render correctly.

Presumably the url string returned by the #show is being picked up and 'linked'
by MediaWiki before it reaches the formatting within the template.

[Bug 23343] Allow blocking open proxies based on X-Forwarded-For header

--- Comment #8 from Marcin Cieślak marcin.cies...@gmail.com 2011-01-13
01:37:58 UTC ---
The way I understand this bug is that XFF IP addresses should be checked for
blocking *irrespective* the trusted XFF list.

In August 2010 checkusers saw example of the email spammer that used 19
different IP addresses plus 4 /24 networks and 1 /network full of proxies. But
he only had
4 different IP addresses in his XFF headers from a single /16 range of the
dynmic IP provider.

Many of those proxies where some located on some dynamic DSL loatons of unknown
provenience, so that marking them as trusted would be a recipe for disaster.
We don't know whether they allow for private IP addresses, we don't know if
they allow fake XFF to be passsed over etc.

Besides I don't believe that TrustedXFF list could (and should) be edited and
deployed so quickly to fight abuse like this.

This feature could possibly be enabled by default - there is little damage if
someone fakes their XFF header and happens to use a blocked IP address, so be
it.

It could become problematic with RFC1918 addresses - for example a
non-wikimedia wiki that wishes to block some local user 192.168.0.0/24 would be
effectively be blocking all poor RFC1918 souls behind some proxies on the whole
Internet.

It seems very important for subcategories to be listed on parent category
pages. Isn't it just as important to list parent category(ies) on subcategory
pages? To be clear, there is always a list of subcategories on parent category
pages. When I click on a subcategory, there is nothing on that page to connect
it back to its parent category(ies). Without such a list, it seems impossible
to tell if a category is a subcategory of a higher-level category or more than
one higher-level category. Wouldn't it be very useful to have the
parent-category information ready at hand by listing parent(s) on subcategory
pages?

While first of all you should be using quickUserCan('create') not
quickUserCan('createtalk'). (The permission is called createtalk, but you're
checking if the user can create not that they can createtalk)

Secondly, it is expected you check both edit and create, not just create.
neither userCan( 'create' ) nor quickUserCan( 'create' ) check if you can edit,
only if you can create the page. Arguably thats a little counter-intuitive, but
thats the way it currently is.

For reference to anyone else reading this, the relevant edit that i reverted

No, I'm only interested in the talk pages, as you see further down:
if(!$sktemplate-mTitle-quickUserCan('createtalk')){
  foreach(array_keys($links['namespaces']) as $ns){
if(strpos($ns,'talk')!==false){
On the manual page you say
Note: Revoking the 'edit' right already prevents affected users from creating
 new pages and talk pages.
(which doesn't tell the user the exact code you mean too, by the way.)
However quickUserCan('createtalk') says otherwise.
 Secondly, it is expected...
One cannot know what is expected. One only reads the manual page.

Considering that a non-talk namespace is allowed to have talk in its name, and
a talk namespace might not have talk in its name (Especially for non-english
namespace names), thats not the correct check. but thats off topic.

No, I'm only interested in the talk pages, as you see further down
yes i knew that. I suppose you could use createtalk instead of create and a
check that the title is a talk page, but everything in core seems to do
userCan( 'create' ).

On the manual page you say
Note: Revoking the 'edit' right already prevents affected users from
creating new pages and talk pages.

While i didn't say that, someone else did, but the sentence is correct.

However quickUserCan('createtalk') says otherwise.

like its supposed to. The sentence never said quickUserCheck('createtalk') will
return false if user doesn't have edit rights. It said you can't create a talk
page if you don't have edit rights. There is a very large difference.
(Furthermore, that manual page is for people running mediawiki installs, not
people writing php code, so talking about internals on that specific manual
page would be inappropriate).
-

Last of all, what are you requesting be changed/be done? This bug lacks a
problem statement.

This would
seek to the start time then stop at the end time ( but the browser would
 buffer
more than it needs since there is presently no way in the HTML5 spec to stop
the video from buffering ). But it would be a good start, and depending on how
the temporal url standard develops and the amount of time and interest we can
upgrade the http based seek system to better handle start / end times.

Will update this bug once I have the feature in the TimedMediaHandler code

Thanks Michael. As an example of a way that this modification could help in
verification on Wikisource (as seen, for example
http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Babes_in_the_Wood), I've put together a page
which features a silent film http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Daydreams. The time
location seen on the left could link to the portion which is defined by the
start and end times, and allow for Wikisource to validate either text which
appears on screen or for the transcription of the audio.

[Bug 26381] Special:BannerController breaks all JS on live site

Dragonfly debug info

Here's what I've discovered. Everything seems to be loaded, but jQuery is a
roast. Errors look different at different times (at the moment of reporting the
BannerController error was first in the list, so I decided that it is to be
blamed). Sometimes, there are no errors and JS works, but most of time it's
completely screwed up.

LocalSettings.php file which exhibits the problem

In the hope of making progress on this bug: here is a (slightly redacted for
passwords and such) version of LocalSettings.php, with which I can reliably
reproduce the bug. I tested without any extensions, and the bug is still there.
Any ideas what could cause the bug?
