[Bug 60468] Make Special:ActiveUsers controllable by a configuration variable
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60468 --- Comment #5 from MZMcBride --- I should have replied more directly initially. Let me try again. (In reply to comment #0) > https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/107988 unconditionally disabled > Special:ActiveUsers for all miser mode wikis, including all the small > Wikimedia projects who knows how many thousands small wikis where the special > page causes no problems. "Unconditionally" seems like a strange wording choice here. It's behind the $wgMiserMode configuration variable now, as far as I can tell. That's not unconditional, that's the opposite. By default, $wgMiserMode is false, so any small wiki will presumably be completely unaffected by this change, I think. Am I misunderstanding or mistaken? Wikimedia wikis are affected because all Wikimedia wikis set $wgMiserMode to true, regardless of wiki size. A bit of searching reminded me of bug 46098, of course. (In reply to comment #4) > (In reply to comment #3) >> Until Special:ActiveUsers' performance problems can be addressed, putting it >> behind $wgMiserMode as a temporary measure seems acceptable. > > Who said "temporary"? Is someone working on making it more efficient? There should be a bug about making Special:ActiveUsers efficient enough (similar to bug 10593). There should also be a bug about ultimately killing $wgMiserMode. I consider it a hack. I don't think we should encourage second-class features. We should either support the features fully in core, kill them, or put them into an extension. I'm not sure either of these bugs exist yet. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. Who said "temporary"? Is someone working on making it more efficient? Also, I don't think it will ever get efficient enough for the English Wikipedia and until it affects en.wiki it's liable to be killed any time for everyone, as we've seen. > For small and > medium Wikimedia wikis, we should simply disable $wgMiserMode. :-) Thoughts > on > that? Aye, indefinite ones or very long ones probably wouldn't need to be specified. Copying what I said on Bug 60437 over to here (sorry about it winding up over there initially): The expiry time should not be displayed if it's set to indefinite. This may also apply if it's set to a sufficiently long duration (for instance if it expires after 6 months, that may well be plenty that it doesn't really matter anymore), though what the boundary would be, or if this is indeed that case, is more up in the air. It is most important to specify the duration where it is shorter, such as of a week (wikitech), 30 days (wikipedia), etc. There, the logins will be expiring quite frequently, and for the users, quite unexpectedly: if they told it to keep them logged in, it will appear to them that they are being logged out after they specifically told it to not log them out, because that's what it said. > For Facebook, the main cookie expires in one month if it's checked, similar > to our current behavior. Hey, just because Facebook does something, that doesn't mean it's a good idea. I mean, yeah, I doubt it causes them any real problems, but we can still do better. (In reply to comment #47) You're wrong. Stating that things are completely obvious does not make you not wrong. Interestingly, if you revert again, you'll be past three reverts on this bug. The right thing for a label description is _clarity_. Clarity is not necessarily comprehensive detail, but providing the user: - What essential information they need to make decisions, and no more - What they expect, which is largely shaped by their experiences on other sites Since it is completely obvious that you don't need to know the time period to make a decision, and literally no one has been able to provide a relevant example of another site that follows the practice being recommended, it makes no sense to revert back to the historic practice of declaring what is obviously superfluous information. Providing this information is a good example of "implementation model" rather than "mental model", meaning shaping the user interface to exactly match how the system functions behind the scenes, rather than what the user expects and needs.[1][2] To make myself crystal clear here: I am not arguing we should be shaping core to what English Wikipedia needs. Excessively detailed copy and unnecessary logic to include the value of the cookie expiration is a bad user experience for any MediaWiki installation. 1. http://www.uxpassion.com/blog/strategy-concepts/implementation-mental-representation-models-ux-user-experience 2. http://www.sfs.uni-tuebingen.de/~cculy/courses/S2012/visDesignEval/presentations/Chapter_2_Daniil_Sorokin.pdf -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 40240] "view source" on Main_Page should be an edit to the sandbox
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40240 Quim Gil changed: What|Removed |Added CC||jared.zimmerman@wikimedia.o ||rg Version|1.21.0 |1.23-git --- Comment #8 from Quim Gil --- Or Edit [lock icon] as an optional substitute of "View source" in all cases (not only the homepage)? For most users this message is clearer than "View source". It also makes a permanent position for an "Edit" option, that users will see sometimes with a lock icon added, only when they don't have permissions to edit. The lock icon would add a visual cue that is already used to identify protected pages, and would avoid any changes in the current workflow or strings. No redirect to sandbox, no new translations needed. Just wondering, do we have any (SVG based) lock icon being used in the MediaWiki UI? Otherwise see e.g. http://thenounproject.com/term/lock/30188/ or the many alternatives in the public domain. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54730 Quim Gil changed: What|Removed |Added Version|1.22.0 |1.23-git --- Comment #8 from Quim Gil --- (In reply to comment #4) > I remember for sure that it's proved the watch star attracts a significant > number of new registrations, though they have a lower conversion to active > users (they're mostly passive). Ok, this argument makes sense and seems to be baked with data. No objections. Still, MediaWiki admins might still prefer to have real registered users watching certain pages in their wikis as opposed to nothing. More real registered user (not spammers) watching pages eventually lead to more readers, and more readers eventually lead to more page visits (a licit goal for many sites) and perhaps more edits (even if it's only a small percentage, regular sites will do anything to increase legitimate contributions. Therefore, I agree that this feature is perhaps not a silver bullet for exceptionally popular sites like en.wiki, but it might already be useful for the less popular Wikimedia sites that are craving to increase readership, and it would be definitely useful for many (most?) 3rd party MediaWikis. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. Given that over 80% of all oversights (including a lot of weird edge cases) happened on enwiki, it would be useful for it to be kept intact, at least for a period, so that QA checks can be made. Not that there's likely to be a problem, simply that it would be impossible to tell if there is without the original logs for comparison. Also, I'm assuming that this will fix the old attribution glitch.
