Hi Yann

This is a really useful resource. Who is looking after it now, and how is it
being funded? I don’t know who ‘Ray’ is.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Bangladesh has completed its local registration in Bangladesh

2014-06-10 Thread Tonmoy Khan
Dear All,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Wikimedia Bangladesh (WMBD) has
successfully completed its local registration in Bangladesh. Our
application for registration was approved by the Registrar of Joint Stock
Companies & Firms - Bangladesh on 9th June, 2014 and I have collected the
certificate of registration today (10th June, 2014).

Wikimedia Bangladesh has been registered under the Societies Registration
Act of Bangladesh & our official name is Wikimedia Bangladesh Foundation.

The registration process was a very long and demanding one, but our
perseverance and determination finally prevailed. It has become very
difficult to get registration of a society/foundation in Bangladesh as the
incumbents have to have security clearance from the National Security
Intelligence (NSI) of Bangladesh, which is very difficult to get if not
impossible. In the course of dealing with the registration process of WMBD,
I learned that less than 5 applications for registration as societies get
approved out of every 100. We submitted our application in May 2012 and it
took us a little over two years to get the security clearance from NSI &
complete all the bureaucratic process!

It gives us a great sense of achievement that we could uphold the Wikimedia
movement volunteerism spirit with passion, integrity and professionalism
despite being a small volunteer community. The pending registration issue
could not hold us from doing outreach activities locally & taking in the
greater Wikimedia Movement. We organized some excellent programs, workshops
& meet-ups with our limited resources during this time period. This effort
successfully brought in good number of new contributors to Bengali
Wikipedia & increased the article count. Volunteers from WMBD/Bangladesh
are also actively participating in the international Wikimedia movement by
taking part in discussions, conferences & as committee members in different
Wikimedia committees.

We, as a chapter, want to make small but steady steps towards sustainable
progress in fostering the Wikimedia movement in Bangladesh so that we can
make the sum of all human knowledge accessible to the people of this region.

Cheers

Congratulations for your achievement and thank you, Ali, and thanks to
everyone in WMBD that made this possible. After hearing this I will
complain a little less (just a little!) about Italian bureaucracy =P.

I'm looking forward to hearing more exciting news from Bangladesh in the

Yes, it took a long time to get the approval. But we waited with patience
and it is completed now. It is a big milestone for us and now it will be a
lot easier to take the next steps and prepare a perfect future plan.

[Wikimedia-l] "Statement on Wikipedia from participating communications firms"

2014-06-10 Thread William Beutler
Hi, everybody. Longtime lurker, first time writing to the list—the first in
a few years at least.

You may have seen some news coverage today about an initiative from a group
of public relations, marketing, and communications agencies offering a
statement, posted as a user essay on Wikipedia, stating in a public way
their intention to follow Wikipedia's rules—especially regarding WP:COI—to
educate themselves more about Wikipedia, and educate their colleagues and
clients in turn.

   - Here's the statement on Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Statement_on_Wikipedia_from_participating_communications_firms#Participating_agencies
   - Here's a good treatment of the subject from PR Week:

http://www.prweek.com/article/1297798/pr-firms-outline-wikipedia-compliance-joint-statement
   - Here's a good blog post from Phil Gomes (User:Philgomes) about his
   agency's participation in it:
   http://www.edelman.com/post/todays-multi-agency-wikipedia-statement/

This is a project I've led for a few months now, following a meeting in DC
in February, bringing together a number of big agency representatives with
individuals from the Wikipedia community, and some with academic
backgrounds. These included User:Ocaasi, User:Harej, and User:Fuzheado.
Some who watch this list may well have been invited as well, and while I'd
love to have had a bigger group, the conversation that day was very good,
and has led us to this point.

We're also very mindful that this was only one step—as User:Pigsonthewing
has reminded me, not the first such step—but I think it could be a good
one. U.S. agencies going on the record as pledging to follow Wikipedia's
rules is a new thing, and we hope can renew this conversation.

Following this message you'll find the statement in full, and a list of all
agencies (and other organizations) signed to it, as well as names +
usernames of the representative from each.

Cheers,
Bill (User:WWB / User:WWB Too)

*Statement on Wikipedia from participating communications firms*

On behalf of our firms, we recognize Wikipedia's unique and important role
as a public knowledge resource. We also acknowledge that the prior actions
of some in our industry have led to a challenging relationship with the
community of Wikipedia editors.

Our firms believe that it is in the best interest of our industry, and
Wikipedia users at large, that Wikipedia fulfill its mission of developing
an accurate and objective online encyclopedia. Therefore, it is wise for
communications professionals to follow Wikipedia policies as part of
ethical engagement practices.

We therefore publicly state and commit, on behalf of our respective firms,
to the best of our ability, to abide by the following principles:

   - To seek to better understand the fundamental principles guiding
   Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
   - To act in accordance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines,
particularly those related to "conflict of interest."
   - To abide by the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use.
   - To the extent we become aware of potential violations of Wikipedia
policies by our respective firms, to investigate the matter and seek
corrective action, as appropriate and consistent with our policies.
   - Beyond our own firms, to take steps to publicize our views and counsel
our clients and peers to conduct themselves accordingly.
   - We also seek opportunities for a productive and transparent dialogue
with Wikipedia editors, inasmuch as we can provide accurate, up-to-date,
and verifiable information that helps Wikipedia better achieve its goals.

A significant improvement in relations between our two communities may not
occur quickly or easily, but it is our intention to do what we can to
create a long-term positive change and contribute toward Wikipedia's
continued success.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Bangladesh has completed its local registration in Bangladesh

2014-06-10 Thread Lane Rasberry
Hello,

Ali is being modest.

Not only is Wikimedia Bangladesh among only the 5% who got NGO
registration, but they are also among the 1% to do it without paying anyone
a bribe. I have heard that they were asked for money many times to make
things go more quickly. Perhaps people outside the region do not know, but
there are a lot of desks that all want to stamp the registration papers
before giving the final approval. For a foreign-affiliated Internet
technology organization mostly run by younger people who have a
relationship to a major Internet property to be able to get a registration
without paying any bribe is probably unprecedented in the history of South
Asia. Getting a registration is something to be proud of, but getting it
completely honestly means that a lot of extra work went into the
registration just to keep a good reputation.

I am thrilled with the good example this sets and not only is having the
registration a wonderful thing for the Wikimedia community, but also this
shows an excellent precedent for all Bangladeshi community activists
because they have a bright example in Wikimedia Bangladesh that paying a
bribe is not necessary to get an NGO registration. This is really something
to publicize, stress, and note as a point of pride. No one should forget
this as it really takes a lot of sacrifices to do this without bribing and
in terms of cost, it actually is cheaper to save time and pay the bribes.

I hope that this encourages other organizations in Bangladesh to also file
their own NGO paperwork and accomplish whatever they feel ought to be done.

Congratulations a thousand times!

yours,

Wow. Thank you, Lane, for spelling out the difficulty of making this
happen. It really places this accomplishment in context. It sounds like it
is more than a free knowledge win, it's also a win for Bangladesh civil

Well done all! What an accomplishment. Wow. Congratulations.

IME this is from the decent PR people who are really nice, do in fact
know what Wikipedia is and love it too, even if they're the sort of
people who think infographics are excellent things. They're not too
happy with the spammy types either.

(The most effective way I've found to get the point about "bright
line" being a pretty good idea is to point to all the examples of the
media *absolutely crucifying* people or companies for anything within
a mile of a conflict of interest. That's *not* the sort of thing a
decent PR wants on their track record.)

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] FDC Advisory Group recommendations

2014-06-10 Thread Anasuya Sengupta
Dear friends and colleagues,

As you know, the FDC Advisory Group met in Frankfurt at the end of May to
discuss the past two years of the FDC pilot process and to deliberate on
its future. You will be glad to know that they unanimously agreed to advise
the WMF Executive Director (ED) that the FDC process should continue, with
some suggested modifications and improvements.

Please find the main recommendations and thoughts from the Advisory Group
here.[1] The Advisory Group (AG) also decided to share an appendix with the
range of thoughts and opinions it had on some key modifications or changes
to the FDC; you will find that there was considerable diversity of opinion
with some of these ideas, but the AG felt it might be useful for Lila to
see the range!

As you know, the next steps will now be for Lila, as ED, to consult with
WMF staff and to decide with the Board on the future of the FDC. We hope
this decision will be shared with you by the end of July.

Once again, I'd like to thank all the FDC AG members for their
extraordinary work setting up the FDC and for their work on these
recommendations. As the Framework outlines, the FDC AG will formally
disband in September 2014.

The inaugural members of the AG were Richard Ames/Ariconte, Ting Chen
(former member of WMF Board), Jan-Bart de Vreede (WMF
Board), Thomas d'Souza Buckup/TSB, Peter Ekman/Smallbones, Sue Gardner (WMF
ED), Ali Haidar Khan/Tonmoy (WMBN), Crystal Hayling Philanthropy
Advisor), Christophe Henner (WMFR), Sydney Poore/FloNight, Kathy Reich
(Packard Foundation), Pavel Richter ( WMDE), Osmar Valdebenito/B1mbo (WMAR)
and Stu West (WMF Board). With Ali and Sydney on the current FDC, they were
no longer part of the AG meeting in Frankfurt, though their thoughts were
considered as part of the FDC feedback to the Advisory Group; Kathy Reich
and Thomas Buckup were also unable to attend. However, Bishakha Datta and
Patricio Lorente as the two Board representatives on the FDC, joined the AG
for its deliberations, as did I, replacing Barry Newstead.

Please don't hesitate to add your comments and suggestions on the
discussion page of the Recommendations.

Warmly,
Anasuya

[Wikimedia-l] Thoughts on the affiliate-selected Board seats process

2014-06-10 Thread Chris Keating
I have jotted down a few notes on the recent process for the selection by
movement affiliates of Foundation board members. As you might recall, the
result of this year's process was announced last week.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Affiliate-selected_Board_seats

Please join in if you have any comments! The more observations that are
made now, from whatever quarter, while the process is relatively fresh in
peoples' minds, the better :-)

Thanks Lane, for your kind words. Yes, we took a firm stance against
corruption and at some point the options became 3 months vs indefinite
number of years. We choose to walk the hard path and finally was able win
this battle. It will be a great inspiration for us in future days.

Thank you all for your encouragement. We really appreciate it.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Bangladesh has completed its local registration in Bangladesh

2014-06-10 Thread Josh Lim
On behalf of Wikimedia Philippines, allow me to extend my sincere
congratulations to Wikimedia Bangladesh for completing its registration
process! We know how hard it is to navigate through the bureaucracy, but this
shows that all turns out for the better in the end. We look forward to seeing
great things from you guys now that you have this status. :)

Warm regards,

Josh

Congrats, Andy!

Coincidentally, as part of my day job, I was just looking into how we treat
ORCIDs and other author ID schemes in Wikidata. One thing I discovered
poking around by hand is that it is quite difficult to match up who has
ORCIDs (not every researcher) with who has a Wikipedia article (also not
every researcher). I think it would be great to use ORCID's API to search
for article subjects who might have ORCIDs (though I think that list would
have to be confirmed/matched by hand, because of lots of ambiguity around
similar names in ORCID if there's no other information -- maybe a task for
another Wikidata game :) )

Anyway, I'd be happy to chat offlist or somewhere else about it, but I am
glad to see they're reaching out to Wikipedia and that you're involved!

cheers,
Phoebe

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia Announcements] Israel’s Ministry of Education & Wikimedia Israel Agree On New, Unique Initiative

Subject: [Wikimedia Announcements] Israel’s Ministry of Education &
Wikimedia Israel Agree On New, Unique Initiative
To: wikimediaannounc...@lists.wikimedia.org

(Posted also on the Wikimedia Blog:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/06/10/israels-ministry-of-education-wikimedia-israel-agree-on-new-unique-initiative/
)

An agreement was met in a meeting between Rabbi Shai Piron, Israel’s
Education Minister, Jan-Bart de Vreede, Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation
Board of Trustees, Itzik Edri, Chair of the Wikimedia Israel Board and
Michal Lester, Executive Director of Wikimedia Israel, regarding a shared
cooperation with Wikimedia Israel in the framework of the ministry’s school
curricula in the coming years. Through the planned cooperation, history,
geography and science teachers will receive special professional training
to instruct students on how to contribute to new or incomplete Wikipedia
articles for which information is lacking or inadequate.

The Education Ministry will also examine the possibility of integrating
Wikipedia writing assignments in the teaching of research and community
involvement. They will also consider having students who speak additional
languages (primarily English and Russian) write Wikipedia articles about
Israel in those particular languages.

Education Minister Rabbi Shai Piron said, “It is important to us that the
education system in Israel leads in innovation and cooperating with
Wikipedia is a wonderful opportunity to think outside the box and enable
students in Israel to do things that make a difference from which others
can also benefit.”

Jan-Bart de Vreede, Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees
said, “Israel is today among the leading countries in the integration of
Wikipedia in the education system and academia. I hope our joint work model
will also serve as an example to other education systems around the world.”

In the framework of cooperation that is already in place between Wikimedia
Israel and the Ministry of education, several pilot projects are being
conducted. The projects involve teacher training in good Wikipedia usage,
article composition, Wikipedia article writing by gifted high school
students and the teaching of proper Wikipedia usage to elementary
schoolchildren. It is worth mentioning that through cooperation with
academics in a variety of universities and colleges throughout Israel,
hundreds of articles are written each year by students in courses. Thus
students write Wikipedia articles as part of their degrees, sometimes even
in lieu of exams or final papers. The Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv
University recently conducted a special 2-credit course on the subject of
Wikipedia and medicine.

Survey results published last week as part of Wikipedia Academy 2014 Israel
revealed that 84% of the Israeli public relies heavily on Wikipedia and 74%
say that it provides all the information they need. Over one third of the
population expressed interest in learning to write for Wikipedia.
