Hi Gad,

Sorry my response is a bit delayed.

Sure, it would be great to talk on the phone some time, or to perhaps
we can meet at one of the regular Free Culture meetings at NYU.

When is a good time for you?

[Wikimedia NYC] Wikis Take Manhattan Saturday October 10

2009-09-18 Thread Pharos
Hi folks,

Wikis Take Manhattan 2009 is a planned scavenger hunt and free content
photography contest coordinated with Columbia University and New York
University students and The Open Planning Project, aimed at
illustrating Wikipedia and Streetswiki articles covering the wondrous
sights of the isle of Manhattan, and all across the Five Boroughs of
New York City

Scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2009, this event will be a sequel
to last spring's Wikipedia Takes Manhattan (WTM-1) and last fall's
Wikis Take Manhattan (WTM-2) event.

Everyone will meet up and check in at one of the two starting points
located at Columbia and The Open Planning Project, and after an
afternoon of subways, street rambles, photography and free culture
goodness, the night will conclude with a party back at The Open
Planning Project's fantastic new event space nestled between Chinatown
and SoHo.

The day will be sponsored by Free Culture @ Columbia, the Columbia
University chapter of Students for Free Culture, in cooperation with
the NYU chapter Free Culture @ NYU, The Open Planning Project,
Wikimedia New York City and Wikipedia volunteers.

All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in
teams of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a
digital camera and a love of the city).

[Wikimedia NYC] Wikimedia NYC Meeting Sunday November 15

Our next meeting for Wikimedia NYC is Sunday November 15 at Columbia University.

This is a meeting for volunteers to the projects of the non-profit

One big topic of discussion, out of many, will be preparing for our

here!) and at the Brooklyn Public Library.

Other topics will include the particular problems posed by Wikipedia
articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements such as
the article 'Controversies related to prevalence of Jews in leadership
roles in Hollywood', and discussing other issues relevant to Wikipedia
and the other Wikimedia projects.

We welcome all guests. If you support open education and free

[Wikimedia NYC] Open Education League of New York

2009-12-11 Thread Pharos
Greetings to Wikipedians and Wikimedians, and especially to new
friends from the recent CUNY IT Conference,

I would like to invite folks to participate in our Open Education
League of New York list and umbrella group, something that emerged
out of Open Everything NYC conference earlier this year.

http://groups.google.com/group/open-education-league-ny

http://nyc.openeverything.us/

One of the initial ideas we had in the discussions at Open Everything
NYC was that as we saw so many people raise these topics at that
conference and as we form a real Open Education community in this
area, and there are quite a few folks coming at this goal from
disparate projects and areas of experience, it would be a good way of
connecting for us start regular conversations and perhaps to actually
meet up once a month or so.

There was some discussion of whether we should hold meetings
independently or perhaps piggyback on another group like the Drupal
meetup, and it is probably too early to say now what a permanent
solution would look like (and I hope we'll have some good suggestions
coming).

But this can also be an interesting forum for online conversations
about Open Education topics and local experiences ranging from the
creation of Open Educational Resources to medium-scale scanning
projects of old books and periodicals.

Thanks,
Richard

[Wikimedia NYC] Bring Wikimania 2011 to NYC

2010-04-08 Thread Pharos
Hi folks,

Please sign our petition to bring the international Wikimania 2011
conference to NYC:

http://wikimanianyc.org/

Having this event in NYC will allow it to take advantage of our city's
strong open source and open knowlege copmmunities in the technology
and cultural sectors, to strengthen these communities, and to result
in a truly high-profile Wikimania before the eyes of the world.

With efforts like the planned Wiki World's Fair that can engage the
city as a whole, this occasion represents an unequalled opportunity of
broad public outreach for the wiki and free culture movements on both
a local and an international basis in this very global city.

Clearly, there is no better place to celebrate Wikipedia's 10th year
than will be found at the crunchy core of the Big Apple.

[Wikimedia NYC] April 13: WikiWednesday Salon and Mini-Video Opportunity

2016-04-06 Thread Pharos
Hi Wiki-Yorkers,

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community on April 13 for our
monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing
workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.

Special this month, a Mini-Video opportunity for individuals to share their
Wikipedia experiences (during pre-meeting, 6-7pm, and in side-office during
regular meetup):

A videographer will be present to record 1-3 minute Mini-Videos of folks
saying anything about their Wikipedia-related projects, whether an
edit-a-thon they joined (Art+Feminism or others), an article they edited,
or a class project they were a part of.

(Videos will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and YouTube. With the time we
have, anyone may present a video. Rehearse your talk before you come. You
may share an experience, give a lesson, make a presentation, or say what
you like. The audience might be anyone searching for videos of Wikipedians
talking about Wikipedia. This will be an amateur effort.)

We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter,
and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new
participants.

We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement
and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing
free knowledge projects.

We will also follow up on plans for recent (Art+Feminism!) and upcoming
edit-a-thons, and other outreach activities.

After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video
games in the gallery!

We will also decide on our chapter's votes for the global Wikimedia
Foundation board at this meeting:

campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latin American arts and culture
and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

http://www.meetup.com/WikimediaNYC/

The Museum of Modern Art and Fundacion Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps
de Cisneros are uniting with international allies to focus on the lives and
works of Latin American artists, architects and designers.

With keystone events scheduled for October 22 in New York City and other
cities throughout the month (Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Caracas, & others),
the campaign aims to further similar goals to Art+Feminism.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia
editing experience required. Introductory training on the basics of
Wikipedia editing will be given throughout the edit-a-thon. Please bring

Wiki page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/MetAsianMonth_2019

The Met will host a Wikipedia edit-a-thon to build global access to
information about Asian art. The Met's collection of Asian art is one of
the largest and most comprehensive in the world, and the Museum aims to
share it through Wikimedia platforms.

This November is the fifth annual Wikipedia Asian Month. At this

others, will edit and contribute to Wikipedia articles, as well as cite and
source information about Asian art. Asia Art Archive will host a sister
event in Hong Kong next week.

The Met will provide a starter set of objects for participants to write

and links to our Japanese Illustrated Books Digital Collection. We will
also provide a brief introduction about The Met's collection of Asian art
and some of the treasures it holds.

[Wikimedia NYC] Saturday: Met Museum Wiki-thon + tour + cake!

2020-01-24 Thread Pharos
An update for tomorrow, spend the rainy day inside with art and open
knowledge, with a wiki-cake finale:

Join us at The Met for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon focused on the history, art,
and culture of America—and the understanding that each of us brings to
America. America's past and evolution is a complex tapestry of cultures,
from Indigenous peoples to settlers, enslaved peoples, pioneers, and
immigrants. Each culture, together with the growing pains of war, industry,
and expansion, has provided a rich history of our past in the objects that
artists and artisans created.

---When & Where---
Date: Saturday, January 25, 2020
Time: 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education
Metropolitan Museum of Art (81st Street entrance), 1000 Fifth Avenue

We have a special tour of the American Wing at 1pm, and we'll end the day
with wiki-cake, and briefly sing in Wikipedia's new year!

And maybe some of us will head out to a bar afterward for an informal
Wikipedia Night.

[Wikimedia NYC] WikiSeder 7pm livestream

2020-04-13 Thread Pharos
I would like to invite everyone to join Wikimedia NYC and friends in
drinking four cups of wine (or other beverage of your choice) to Free
Knowledge, tonight at 7pm!

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiSeder

The WikiSeder is a secular celebration of wiki wisdom and free culture in
the age of the quarantini. As we pass through our current plague, let us
come together from our lockdowns to retell stories of liberation and crisis
overcome through fellowship and information-sharing.

All are very welcome, this is not meant as a religious or exclusive thing.
There is an American tradition since the 1960s of interfaith and secular
seders highlighting social causes, and I hope WikiSeder can be in this
tradition.

Whether you're marking Passover, Easter, the upcoming Ramadan, or just
Spring, you're welcome to virtually join us and share comments as we
proceed through the evening, and share the role and relevance of
Wikipedia/Wikimedia in overcoming crises past and present, by furthering
the cause of a world that can know itself a little better.

We'll do this as a livestream video episode on the Wikipedia Weekly Network
podcast, so it will be public and go live on Youtube and other platforms at
7pm tonight -

We'll be able to see your comments on the various platforms and respond to
them in real-time, so we encourage interaction in that way.

[Wikimedia NYC] Sep 20: Wikimedia NYC Members' Meeting / Annual Election

2023-09-07 Thread Pharos
Please join Wikimedia NYC for our Members’ Meeting <
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Election_2023> on
September 20, 2023. The Members' Meeting is similar to other WikiWednesday
meetups, except that its primary function is to elect a new Board of
Directors.

We will elect five or so board seats. After being elected, those elected
can potentially appoint more seats.

If you've been active in the chapter and looking for ways to deepen your
engagement, consider putting yourself forward! If you know someone who you
think would be a good fit for the Wikimedia NYC Board, encourage them to
self-nominate, too! The deadline to nominate yourself is September 13.

Voting (open to all chapter members) will be via a secure third party
service, and will be possible both online and in-person, in a period
starting a couple of days before. Your email address will be required to
vote in order to validate members, but your vote itself will be anonymous.

The meetup page
 has some
additional information for prospective candidates.

Please respond directly to this email if you have any questions about the
election or running for chapter board.

Thanks,
Richard
