Santhosh,

I had spoken with one of the tablet manufacturers with Jessie. The current
Akash OS is indeed Android based so Indic language support is
poor/unavailable.

Debian based tablets are being discussed but the manufacturer indicated
that it was at least a year+ down the line.

With best regards,
Alolita

[Wikimediaindia-l] [Android] Picture of the Day Wallpaper

2011-12-01 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
Heya all,
I was searching the Android Market, when I stumbled upon this app:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.practicalapps.android.wallpaper.wikimedia
It's called Picture of the Day Wallpaper
From the market page:

Beautiful daily photos from Wikimedia Commons scroll across your desktop.

Live Wallpaper which displays the Picture Of The Day posted by Wikimedia
Commons, an public domain media file repository
(commons.wikimedia.orghttp://www.google.com/url?q=http://commons.wikimedia.orgusg=AFQjCNFNTovbfl8ZcrbSTJNc32s9TzrcXA
).

Each day a different glorious image from the Wikimedia Commons image
library is automatically downloaded and added to the scrolling rotation of
the last six images.

A convenient shortcut to the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Day webpage
is provided on the initial application and preferences screens. A
preference setting is also provided to control the image scroll speed and
position of the image title.

To install this animated wallpaper, launch the application icon or
long-click on your phone's desktop, then select Wallpapers, then select
Live wallpapers.

*All images are credited to NASA (NASA.gov)*
That last line worries me a bit. Are all photos credited to NASA,
irrespective of who uploaded it?
OR
Are all photos of the Day by NASA, thereby giving others no chance for a
front page visit?

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia and marketing

2011-12-01 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
Heya all,
My friend who works as a Social Media analyst, sent this to me:

An exerpt:

The volume of content is growing, but the active contributors to maintain,
update and police those articles is shrinking. As this trend continues,
vandalism, bias, outdated information and blatant factual errors will run
even more rampant.

Marketers are the most motivated to maintain Wikis on subjects important to
them and invest the time in providing quality, well-verified content. We
can fill this gap* if we can learn to support Wikipedia’s encyclopedic
goals and follow the rules*.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Supporting the languages of India

2011-12-01 Thread Ravishankar
Hi All,

What many of us are sharing here are personal experiences, anecdotes from
one section of the community pyramid that Gerard mentioned. This can only
lead to inaccurate inferences about Indic languages. So, let's do some
objective analysis:

Based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literacy_in_India , India's literacy
rate is 74.04% in 2011.

As I have no practical experience of education systems in other states, let
me take the example of Tamilnadu which has a literacy rate of 80.3%. The
19.7% illiteracy rate is a social issue and let's ignore it for this
analysis. This example can very well be related with other states and India
as a whole.

Tamilnadu had three educations systems mainly:

* *State board ( Majority of the students are enrolled in this and most
pursue education through Tamil as a medium of instruction*. *Even for
English medium students, learning Tamil as a language is mandatory for 10+2
years* ). Most of the government schools and government aided schools fall
under this category. You can refer
www.ssa.tn.nic.in/Docu/GenEduStat.pdffor the number of schools in
Tamilnadu operating under government,
government aid and private sector. Except for few cities, government
schools are the majority.

* Matriculation, ICSE and other boards ( Medium of instruction is English
but most study Tamil as a language for 10+2 years). From this year, this
system is abolished and merged with state board's uniform syllabus.

* CBSE - Only a minority of schools are in this system. Medium of
instruction is English and a good number of people do study Tamil as a
language for 10 years.

So, all these people can read, write, understand and speak Tamil and are
functionally literate in their mother languages. Even if you assume that
some studied other languages instead of Tamil in matriculation or CBSE
syllabus, it is still a minority and can't exceed 10% by any means.
*
If you take the case of Srilanka, where Tamil is also an official language,
99% of the native Tamils complete their study in government schools with
Tamil as their medium of instruction. So, they are almost 100% literate in
their mother languages. *

I am sure that similar trends and statistics can be observed for other
Indic languages.

Ashwin,

Thanks for the
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Graham%27s_Hierarchy_of_Disagreement1.svglink.
As you can see from the stats above, I do refute the central point
here as it is totally wrong. Being offended by it is my personal expression
and doesn't lack civility or make judgments about the one who posted the
inferences. If we do not raise our concern for valid issues, India will
continue to be seen as a country of snake charmers.

Shiju,

I am aware that mother language illiteracy is a raising problem in Indian
cities. But, as Bala said it is a social problem and out of Wikimedia's
mission. *Indic language projects are for the people and by the people who
primarily gain and share knowledge in those languages* and their percentage
is huge. Gaining readership / contribution from the minority English
comfortable audience should not be a priority and it will not be worth the
effort.

The problem mentioned by many Indic language Wikipedians is a bit
different. Since, many of the present day internet accessing Wikipedians do
have a city / middle class / English educated background, they are at loss
to write about different subjects in an encyclopedic quality. But, that
doesn't mean that they are proficient in English writing either as you can
witness from IEP. This is something to do with the quality and policy of
higher education in our country. But, this doesn't mean by anyway that
Indians are functionally illiterate in their own languages to the extend of
not knowing to read and write.

Gerard,

Here are some scenarios:

* People who know English and an Indic language well, know about Indic
language projects and still contribute in only one language. Nothing much
can be done to motivate them to switch the contributions. If they decide to
do it by themselves, it is huge WIN.

* People who know English and an Indic language well but do not know about
Indic language projects. It should be our highest priority to spread
awareness about Indic language projects to these people because they can
bring great experience from English Wikipedia. We do have the privilege of
having few contributors like them and their roles are phenomenal in shaping
the community.

* People who know only the Indic languages very well but do not know about
Wikipedia. It should also be our highest priority to spread awareness about
Wikipedia to these people. The moment they know that such a thing exists,
they will jump on it because people are so hungry for knowledge in their
own language. If you would like to know how we know this: We did a 3 day
long Tamil Internet workshop practically for thousands of people during a
language conference last year. People were so happy to know that they could
read, write, search in their own languages.

Hi all,

Just a word of caution here.

Lift and ship approach will be a disaster. So any article that goes into
Kiwix, must be reviewed / tagged for legal compliance (Maps, others!), be
of decent quality and avoid controversial topics(Caste topics Hell no). We
must also check for copyvio images etc. It requires fair amount of
reviewing on the content side. When it comes to Indic, spell check,
language quality also matters. Just sharing some points we considered to
bring a quality offline version of Tamil. We were taken by scale of content
copyediting work that such an offline project requires. I am sure
WikiProject:India on enwp has no more volunteers than any Indic
wikipedia(atleast comparable to Tamil) and I seriously don't think we can
do justice for something like this in 60 days.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Mullaperiyar Dam article on English Wikipedia - Collaboration sought

2011-12-01 Thread Pradeep Mohandas

hi,

A few of the interesting articles written about the Dam were by Major (later
Colonel) John Pennycuick, considered the Chief Engineer of the Dam. He wrote
about his for the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1897. The edition can be
found here.[1] The edition contains chapters on the Diversion of the Periyar
and The Periyar Tunnel followed by discussion and correspondences on the
same. I really wish we did more stuff like this in 2011, but that is a
different discussion.

Interestingly, these articles - dated to 1897 (!!!) are pay-walled. Each of the
article I mentioned above costs GBP 18!

Help is needed on trying to get these articles so that they can inform the
Wikipedia article now under Collaboration of the Month. I am hoping to write to
the UK Wikimedia Chapter and the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK to see if
copies of these can be obtained. Does anyone on-list see any possibility of
getting a copy otherwise?

I have been doing FOSS promotion for about 11 years now

now know there is something called Linux and open source, nothing much
has changed in all these years.

You can at least teach to the students and may be they can accept a
few things, but teaching FOSS (or anything for that matter) to
teachers is a nightmare. You can get about 1-2 % teachers max. from
whom you can get some positive response.

Well, I can go on and on and on on this topic.

Fewer things have changed from 2007 to now.

1. Internet penetration has increased, atleast lot many people have
broadband now, but still things have to improve.
2. Facebook. (the timepass/hanging out the author mentions happens online
now.)
3. GNU/Linux or open source are not completely new terms for atleast city
students, most of them would have heard, many more students *use*
opensource (be it ubuntu / android etc), but collaboration / contribution
still needs awareness.
4. The number of rock stars like Yuvi at college level who are aware of the
outside world, has increased. But proportionately they are still like
Wikipedia editors : Wikipedia readers.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] An Offline Wikipedia for the Aakaash Tablet?

2011-12-01 Thread Jessie Wild
Hey Everyone!

I am so excited about the content of this email chain! There have been huge
advances in the offline work for India of late.

Quick background: I know many of you know, and Hisham mentioned it earlier,
but I am involved with the offline WIkipedia projects around the world for
WMF, so I have an ok idea about what options are available and who uses our
information (like OLPC or SOS Children's Village or Camara).

For this work, I think it's _imperative_ to get a high-quality, Indic
version available for mass-distribution. But while the full,
all-encompassing offline version might take 6-7 months to develop, there
are bite-sized pieces we can concretely work on so we can start at least
pushing some information out. For example, if we focus on Geography
first, we could perhaps get a really good Geography package set-up and
ready to go by the next pilot, in order to at least get a package out there
- something to have a presence within the distributions. The storage space
on the Aakash tablet and other low-cost devices is minimal, so a limited
content package is actually fine, in many ways.

In the meantime, we can be working on more and more additions, which could
be distributed in-mass as time unfolds. Then people could basically have a
library of content available for their perusal.

Thoughts on this? It helps prevent a complete gap in time for our
execution: we have an AWESOME encyclopedia already available (that's why we
have almost 500M people reading it every month!), and it would be really
sad, I think, to sit on such a resource! One good place to start in terms
of identifying content is to leverage the list of articles use for
the Malayalam Offline edition - that probably would get us a good step of
the way there in terms of which articles are India-relevant and worthy of
inclusion.

I have a lot more I can say about this, but will stop myself here for now :)

[Wikimediaindia-l] Sharing insights and experiences from Indian language wiki communities - Nepali

2011-12-01 Thread Shiju Alex
Dear All,

Today I am sharing the experience of the Nepali Wiki community.

As part of my discussion with Indic language Wikipedians I spoke with
Nepali wikipedians also (Rajesh pandey, Bhawani Gautham, and Saroj Dhakal).
You know all of them since they are active in India list also. Please read
their experiences with the Nepali Wiki projects here.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_India_Programs/Indic_Languages/Nepali/Discussions/2011

Nepali with more than 16 million speakers world wide, has more than 3
million speakers in India. Nepali is one of the 22 scheduled languages of
india. The speakers of Nepali are distributed across India, even though a
more concentration of speakers of Nepali language is in North Eastern
India.

From the English Wikipedia article about Nepali language:

In India, there are a large number of Nepali-speaking people. There are an
estimated 500,000 Nepali speakers in Sikkim (where Nepali is the official
state language.) In Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts of West Bengal,
there are about 1,400,000 Nepali speakers. In North-East India (states of
Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal
Pradesh), there are several million Nepali speakers. A considerable number
of Nepali-speaking people are also present in many Indian cities such as
Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

At the recently concluded WikiConference a Nepali Wikipedian, Saroj Dhakal,
gave us a wonderful overview of Nepali Wikiprojects. I just noticed that
most of the active contributors of Nepali wikipedia are staying in India.

Kindly read the experience of Nepali Wikipedians at

 Err.. Ravi, correction.
In ISCE and ISC systems, people study a second language for only 8 years
minimum, unless the school chooses to have it in 1st and 2nd.
I personally opted to study Hindi as a second one [NOT in TN] for 10yrs in
 ISCE.
In ISC, only English is compulsory, same for CBSE in the +1 and +2 stages.
ONLY State Boards, across the country make it mandatory for a second
 language for all 12yrs.
