[Wikimediaindia-l] Two more volunteers for coordinating WikiProject India
I would like to inform the broad community of more glad tidings - we have two more volunteers who have agreed to coordinate WikiProjects. These are: * Wikipedia:WikiProject Transport in India - User:Rsrikanth05 * Volunteer coordinator for the Newsletter of WikiProject India - User:Prad2609 (who doesn't really like titles) :). We welcome them to their new responsibilities and they are now proud members of a select club indeed - people who have publicly volunteered to look after an area of responsibility on WikiProject India. Please welcome them on their talk pages and not on the list(s). We would like to remind readers that we are constantly looking for editors to help with the various departments and task forces. There are more than seventy more areas needing looking after. And if the project you are interested in already has one, welcome to it - we need lots of dedicated voluntees per department or task force not just one. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Telugu article count crosses 50, 000
Congratulations, Telugu Wikipedians! This is an important milestone and you deserve all the warmest best wishes. May I suggest a community meetup to celebrate this? A landmark like this can provide acceleration to your community - and could be the catalyst for more collaboration (WikiProjects, etc.) and outreach. A meetup must celebrate but can also look forward and initiate increased community building. It can also be an opportunity to attract Telugu media coverage which will get new users and recognise existing editors. As always, do reach out if you need any support on any of this. I would like to publicly say that I have erred in naming Noopur here. I did not mean to cast any aspersion on her and her good work and track record. I thought that since she is a publicly known figure with responsibilities and good work done in so many spheres - GLAM, Delhi community and now in India Programs, that it would be an example of an already dedicated person whereas I preferred someone new who was not already committed. I now see that I was wrong to name a specific person. The text can be misconstrued as a negative by those who dont know Noopur or her qualities. Also Noopur never aspired to the post. Hey Ashwin! I don't think anyone who is active on this list will misunderstand your mail. :) We've had discussions before on how a lot of positions cause confusion and I also want someone who can dedicate enough time and attention to work on this project. So, no hard feelings on my part. I also saw your Wikipatrika Meta suggestion (going OT here). Since I will be taking that up, my hands are really full anyway. Anyway, I'd want to be the backup in case you need any short term help. I am grateful for your considerate explanation though :) In the meanwhile, we have a list of women Wikipedians. This outreach event was held in 2 and 3 of March and was attended by around 300 participants. It was first big-level program of Wikimedia Bangladesh and it was outside of the Dhaka (the capital) to focus on country-wide outreach. We called it an unconference to give it a less formal look and to make the appearance more welcoming. This two days event was inaugurated by the Chittagong City Mayor and and in the last it was attended by the Since and Technology minister of Bangladesh Government. It was also attended by some other popular public figures, writers, and university professors, and media personalties. During the unconference we had events like workshops, photo exhibition, cultural program, seminars, article writing contest, etc. We had several teams from the schools, colleges, and universities in Chittagong as team participants. The unconference was hosted by Chittagong campus of Independent University, Bangladesh. You can see the some of the images of the events in the Commons category [4]. Because of the presence of the popular public figures and government officials, the event got a significant amount of media coverage in national print and electronic media. We also even had billboards in the city's main crossings to let people know about Bangla Wikipedia which was the main purpose of this event and current strategic priority of Wikimedia Bangladesh. Wikimedia Bangladesh wants to thank everyone who supported us. We want to thank our sponsors and donors who helped us to arrange this big event. We want thank Wikimedia Foundation director Sue Gardner for her nice video speech that we screened in the inaugural ceremony. Sure, everyone is welcome to join any public lists, and that is why they are public! So welcome to join Wikimedia Bangladesh list. :-) Just to let you know guys, like Wikimedia India list, we don't use English much there. Because Bangla is the only official language in Bangladesh, and people from every corner of Bangladesh understand Bangla perfectly well. So you will get most of the e-mails in Bangla, but of course English is not forbidden. We do get e-mails in English too. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] India Programs-Fortnightly IRC: Thursday March 15th @ 9pm IST (Indic Languages) Thursday March 29th @9pm IST (Outreach Communication) (#wikimedia-office)
Gentle reminder. Do join in. hisham On Mar 11, 2012, at 6:41 AM, Hisham wrote: Hi Folks One of the essential things that India Program needs to constantly work out is keeping the community informed of the work that we are doing - so that this work is clearer but also to help cross-pollinate ideas amongst a wider set of community members who might not have been engaged on specific village pump / talk page discussion or involved in particular activities (e.g. outreach events) or wikiprojects. We used to have a monthly IRC with the community and India Program. (For those who are not familiar with IRC, it is an Internet messaging system similar to a regular chat room. It's very simple to use and you can join in by clicking on the following link: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#wikimedia-office.) I have been remiss in conducting these for the past few months - and I'd like to make amends by restarting, with a couple of modifications. a) I'd like to propose fortnightly instead of monthly. (I was wary of doing it any more frequently than monthly earlier because I didn't know if there would be enough on the plate to discuss. I have changed my mind now - because there is too much to discuss to cover in a single monthly session.) I'd like to propose that we do it in the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month at 9pm IST (which is GMT + 0530) - THOUGH NOT THIS MONTH - BECAUSE I HAVE MISSED THE TIMELINE. Just for March, we will do it on March 15th and March 29th (both at 9pm IST which is GMT + 0530) b) I'd like to propose that we do it focussed on specific work streams instead of general. The reason I say this is that - as with many community meet-ups, folks will give time to attend a meet-up or participate in an IRC only if there is a topic of relevance to them. To that extent, we could do one IRC on Indic languages and one on Outreach Communications. I'd start both the IRCs with a re-cap of India Programs activities for the fortnight (or so) prior to the IRC and forward from the IRC - and then we could talk about either Indic langauges or Outreach Communications. The March 15th one will be focussed on Indic Languages and the one on March 29th will be on Outreach Communications. ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

Just go to the Grants program page above, and click the Translate this page link near the top. Thanks in advance for your help! I appreciate it greatly. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: Please help makes our grants program more accessible!
Can people now submit grant proposals in their own language? I think they could, but the people who will eventually decide about the grant may not know the language. Although I see GAC members cover some languages. In my personal opinion, to help everyone in this matter maybe it is better to keep things in English. But the information pages on grants and its process should be translated to other languages so people from different languages can understand the procedure very well. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Foundation-l] Bangla Wikipedia Unconference 2012 in Chittagong
I subscribed to Bangaladesh list.! :) Ade. On 15 March 2012 08:01, Tanvir Rahman wikitan...@gmail.com wrote: Nothing prevents Indian editors from subscribing to that list. If I'm not wrong, WikiTanvir is already subscribed to this list. There may be others also whom I do not know. /me nods with Ashwin here.
