[WISPA] Mikrotik and 5 & 10 Mhz

2006-02-07 Thread JNA
I just installed the new 2.9.12 packages and noticed an issue with the
ability to use the 5 and 10 mhz option. I have two sets of cards in the
machines:

(Atheros AR5212) & (Atheros AR5213) - The AR5213 shows the options to use 5
& 10 mhz however my AR5212 cards do not have this option? Is there a reason
the 5212's do not have that option?

Thanks,
John

Tom,

We are doing this. We have the base set to ap bridge, with dynamic wds
enabled using nstream and polling. Backhaul on the towers using wds station
WDS with dynamic wds enabled using nstream and polling. We then have an omni
off the routerboard and the Ethernet connected to a trango 900 base via
cross over. It is working as a full bridge and our clients get dhcp from the
gateway server at the other end with no problem. I think this is what you
are looking at doing and If so it is working for us.

Re:[WISPA]Farmers Wanting full Farm Coverage

2006-02-07 Thread James McKinion
We have had two commercial cotton farms in Mississippi under complete wireless
local area network coverage for about 3 years in a current demonstration
project for precision agriculture applications. The farm in eastern
Mississippi has about 1600 acres of contiguous farmland with gently rolling
land. We used Alvarion BreezeAccess II equipment with an omni antenna at
thebase station to communicate to three repeater station located at the edges
of the farm. Directional panel antennas connected to BreezeAccess II 2.4 GHz
radios which then went to Breezecomm radios connected to 120 degree sector
antennas which broadcast into the farm to the equipment in the fields. THe
farm equipment was equipped with Breezecom radios attached to omni antennas.
All of these radios are frequency hopping spread spectrum radios. These have a
range of about 2.5 miles talking from sector antennas to omnis. Wifi will onlu
have a range of 1500 feet talking to omnis. An omni antenna is the only cost
effective practical device to put on a tractor, combine or truck. The other
reason we chose Alvarion is that their radios automatically handle mobility.
That is, they can automatically hand over communcation from sector to sector as
boudaries are crossed with loosing connection or packets of data. This system
has a user data rate of 2 Mbps. The base station has a Starband satellite link
to the Internet. We have also used DirecWay satellite links.

The other farm is located in the Mississippi Dellta and is set up similarly
with the exception being that the communication from the base station to the 9
repeater stations is handled using the Waverider 900 MHz radios. This farm
consists of over 12000 acrs of cotton farmland separated by various tree lines
and is roughly oval shaped with the major axis being 12 miles from side to side
with the farm headquarters situated in the middle. We needed the 900 MHz
radios to penetrate the trre lines to reach the Breezecom repeaters with 120
degree sector antennas to provide field coverage. THe siganl from the base
station reaches almost 10 miles so the entire farm is covered by the base
station. However, you must use yagi antenna precisely aimed to get reception.
Thus, the use of the repeater station using Alvarion Breezecom as before.

I can sen you a copy of the research paper we published if this is of further
interest to you.

Re: [WISPA] taxes and ideas

2006-02-07 Thread John Thomas
Here is a novel idea, how about those that benefit from this list,
digging into their pockets and paying their WISPA dues? I am not even a
WISP yet, and have paid and receive benefits.

Let me just add some ideas:

1) Follow what the DBS industry does: they get their customers
involved in making noise to Congress. Mailers, email notices, website
buttons, and online forms.

I understand that ISPs do not like to involve their customers for fear
that the customers will think you are dying and leave. If handled
appropriately, this need not be a worry.

II4A hired a lobbyist to write 7 template letters to be faxed to
Congress (www.ii4a.org/letters/).

2) Making noise in DC is expensive and time consuming. And diplomacy
is not something the ISP industry is noted for.

You need bucks. Start with a PayPal donation button. Put it
everywhere. Collect some dough to speak for the consumers who like
their 3rd Pipe bandwidth.

3) Come up with a realistic plan for the taxes. The gov't wants money.
Instead of saying NO TAXES, give them an alternative plan of action.
How could they collect additional money? PLay the DC game of compromise.

4) WISPA needs money. May I suggest taking this General list and
making it a subscription? Maybe $9.95 per month or $100 for the year?

5) You might want to set up a WISPA Meeting at ISPCON in May or at the
ISP Expo in Dallas in June.

(If you want help setting this up, let me know).

Those are my double-caffeine inspired thoughts this morning.

PLEASE STAMP OUT THIS URBAN RUMOR BEFORE IT SPREADS!

Not that I blame Robert, but I wish reporters would read things a little
more

carefully.

Ribbono d'almah kulah, the modem tax of the 21st Century.

The President's budget message explicitly refers to unauctioned LICENSED
spectrum. Nor does it impose a tax or fee, but authorize the FCC to do
so.

This is an anual event here in the U.S. The administration has wanted to
impose
spectrum user fees on broadcasters. This has a snowball's chance on
Mercury of
passing. So this year, instead of saying "broadcasters" it included all
users
of unauctioned licensed spectrum, with a justification that a user fee
will
cause the licensee to internalize the cost of not using the spectrum and
spur
the licensee to maximize the value of the resource. Because, as we all
know,
maximizing economic value MUST BE the highest best use of spectrum. Just
ask

any fireman.

Now, dependng on how it actually got drafted, it COULD give the FCC
authority to
impose some kind of user fee on "unlicensed" spectrum. This would very
much

depend on actual statutory language.

Harold

Quoting Robert Horvitz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

http://rcrnews.com/news.cms?newsId=25545

by Jeffrey Silva, RCR Wireless News, 6 February:

"The proposal, contained in the president's 2007 budget plan and
projected to raise $3.6 billion during the decade, is believed to
be aimed at unlicensed frequencies used for Wi-Fi and other
applications. It's unclear whether the 'user fee' tax would be paid
by equipment vendors or end users.

" 'Spectrum assignment policy has not kept pace with the changing
market. Service providers using different technologies to deliver a
similar product can face different spectrum license acquisition
costs,' the budget stated. 'The lack of parity in spectrum
assignment creates incentives that can diminish the overall utility
of the spectrum...' "

[WISPA] Unlicensed Spectrum Taxes

2006-02-07 Thread warped.terranova.net

Bush proposes tax on Wi-Fi, unlicensed spectrum

By Jeffrey Silva
Feb 6, 2006

WASHINGTON-President Bush, facing a huge budget deficit, today proposed
squeezing more money from the nation's airwaves by supporting legislative
changes that would allow the Federal Communications Commission to set "user
fees" on "un-auctioned" radio spectrum.

The proposal, contained in the president's 2007 budget plan and projected to
raise $3.6 billion during the decade, is believed to be aimed at unlicensed
frequencies used for Wi-Fi and other applications.

It's unclear whether the "user fee" tax would be paid by equipment vendors
or end users.

"Spectrum assignment policy has not kept pace with the changing market.
Service providers using different technologies to deliver a similar product
can face different spectrum license acquisition costs," the budget stated.
"The lack of parity in spectrum assignment creates incentives that can
diminish the overall utility of the spectrum."

Bush's $2.77 trillion spending package proposes $302 million for the FCC in
fiscal 2007. Most of the agency's budget would be underwritten by regulatory
fees.

Bush again called for the elimination of the Telecommunications Development
Fund, describing it as "a poorly performing venture capital enterprise
financed by interest earned on spectrum auctions." The TDF was included in
the 1996 telecom act, whose ten year anniversary is Wednesday.

As most WISP operators know, there's no better way to test than on a
live network. Similarly, while there was a 'test' of the voting software
a few months back, there's no better way to make Weird Things happen
than to use it for real. I apologize for any glitches in the voting

[WISPA] taxes and ideas

2006-02-07 Thread Peter R.

Let me just add some ideas:

1) Follow what the DBS industry does: they get their customers involved
in making noise to Congress. Mailers, email notices, website buttons,
and online forms.

And diplomacy is
not something the ISP industry is noted for.

You need bucks. Start with a PayPal donation button. Put it everywhere.
Collect some dough to speak for the consumers who like their 3rd Pipe
bandwidth.

3) Come up with a realistic plan for the taxes. The gov't wants money.
Instead of saying NO TAXES, give them an alternative plan of action. How
could they collect additional money? PLay the DC game of compromise.

4) WISPA needs money. May I suggest taking this General list and making
it a subscription? Maybe $9.95 per month or $100 for the year?

5) You might want to set up a WISPA Meeting at ISPCON in May or at the
ISP Expo in Dallas in June.

(If you want help setting this up, let me know).

Those are my double-caffeine inspired thoughts this morning.

Re: [WISPA] Good news and bad news today

2006-02-07 Thread Bob Moldashel
SureAlot of municipalities say go away. It's that easy.

Some take it on a case by case basis. But overall the attitude is if
you are not a "utility" as outlined by the PSC (Public Service
Commission) you are pretty much out of luck.

Again..it varies by state but here the last thing they want to do is
deal with the stress that the utilities will dump on them

[WISPA] Mikrotik Bridging w-Nstreme

2006-02-07 Thread Tom DeReggi
When using Mikrotik, if I want to do a true bridging configuration (like an
ehternet Switch), if I set AP mode on one side and Client mode on the other,
it does not work because default 802.11 clients do not support bridging. To
solve this, without using Nstreme, we used WDS mode. One side set to
AP-bridge/WDS and the other side WDS-slave. In this configuration we can
VLAN, bridge complete networks and full range of Mac Addresses, and support
PtMP configs, etc.

However, I would like to use Nstreme, and that is where I get confused on
configuration.

For PTP, Mikrotik suggests setting one side as "Bridge Mode" w/ Nstreme
enabled, and the other side Client mode w/ Nstreme enabled.
Under this configuration, is it a true bridge, as I desire? (Pass multiple
Macs and stuff).

If so, is there any reason to use Nstreme w/WDS anymore, if just doing a PtP
backaul link between cell sites?
MIkrotik states if WDS-station mode is used on one side of link, WDS will
work with Nstreme.

In WDS-station mode w/Nstreme, does it also infact act as a true bridge?

However, it appears their may be is a flaw in config options, in the sense
that there is no way to get NStreme to work in PTMP modes as a True bridge,
as that would require WDS-AP and WDS-Slave which is not a supported config.
Am I correct on this? Or when NStreme is used, can I safely use WDS-station,
and be a true bridge?

[WISPA] Amazing 5Ghz link

2006-02-07 Thread Matt Larsen - Lists
Tonight I switched a customer from 2.4Ghz to 5.8Ghz, and have some
amazing results.

Going from a TR5amp AP hooked to a 16db H-pol Tranzeo antenna to a 5a24f
(integrated antenna), I have a -79 signal and four LEDS on the back - at
14.6 miles! The firmware upgrade from 88R to 2.01 increased the signal
strength from -83 to -79.

Looks like I severely underestimated the coverage I was going to get
with this system. I was only figuring about 8 miles. :^)
