Re: [WISPA] Who is using Towercoverage.com ?

Curious, I believe Towercoverage uses a form of Radio Mobile to create
their maps. I have some experience with Radio Mobile, but does their
coverage maps support dual-pol or slant for that matter? Would it make any
difference in the in the outcome of the map?

Re: [WISPA] 3650 Omni

2014-04-08 Thread Eric Muehleisen
Doesn't answer your question but, we've use splitters and sector antennas
to get around the use of omni's. There are a couple of advantages to sector
design. Downtilt being the most important. However, it does cost more tower
rent and cable management can be a pain. We've used it with great success.

looking for areas that we can break up APs and get some RF separation. I
ran into a competitor on the extreme north side of one of our competitors
that has a customer using a M365 power bridge. From their registration on
FCC the closest sites they have registered are over 20 miles away. Can this
be done PtMP on 3650? I have a BH link doing 24 miles on Rockets but havent
tried anything this distance PtMP. I assume they have a closer site that's
not fully registered on the FCC site as of yet.

Anyways, just curious if omni was real effective. Just more or less
looking for areas to throw on 15 to 20 subs to break down some overloaded

Re: [WISPA] Dual Frequency AP Radio

2014-02-13 Thread Eric Muehleisen
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but there are several AP's that
support dual-band operation inside an integrated unit. Ruckus and Ubiquity
have integrated units that broadcast 2.4 and 5.7 simultaneously using the
same or different SSID.

 Good Morning,

I believe I know the answer to this already, however my managers wanted
me to ask. Has anyone ever heard of an access point that has two
different frequencies (ie. 2.4 and 5.8) and each of their antennas
integrated all into a single unit? The thought process behind this being
to save on tower space and load.

This isn't referring to a full duplex configuration used for ptp links
where one frequency transmits while the other frequency listens. This
would be for PTMP between the tower and CPE units.

Hard to tell, noise floor is noise floor which keeps creeping up -
we all know things work better when its quiet. This used to worry
me a lot when I saw it coming, but then I realized it was already
there and I had no idea until I just happened to scan on some radios

I figure a high gain antenna on a tower with a good directional CPE

-Eric

On Tue, Oct 25, 2011 at 8:39 AM, Chuck Hogg ch...@shelbybb.com wrote:

I thought I would post back on here what we did and our results.
 These are preliminary.

 Equipment:
 1 x 320AP

 Configuration with only one sector:
Power set to 19.9dB (per the manual for legal power settings)
AP set to -65 power leveling
Client signals at the AP were -65 (or thereabouts, this fluctuates
from -65 to -70) for all clients.
Client receive levels ranged from -61 to -75.

 Equipment:
 1 x 320AP
 4 x 16.5dB 90 degree sectors
 2 x 4 way splitters from L-Com

 Configuration with only one sector:
Power set to full 25dB (per the manual for legal power settings,
 assuming a -6.5dB of loss)
AP set to -65 power leveling
Client signals at the AP were -65 (or thereabouts, this fluctuates
from -65 to -70) for all clients.
Client receive levels ranged from -64 to -78.

So essentially by adding a 4 way splitter the clients receive levels
increased by about 3.5-4dB. Tower receive levels were unchanged, as
most of the clients were power leveled down. Only one client is
transmitting at full power now. That client is also the highest
signal on both sides. Most client transmit levels are also running at
a higher power now as well.

 Conclusion:
 I think that running 1 x 320AP x 4 sectors through splitters is a
little aggressive. If the majority of your clients are going to have
decent signal levels, then I see no problems with it. However, I
think that our current situation is a little on the edge. I think
that if you are looking for an inexpensive way to use 320AP's, I would
recommend this solution. I think that this solution has a higher net
gain over using an 8dB omni. My results show that it is pretty
consistent on being about a total loss of about 8dB using a 4 way
splitter. You can overcome 6.1dB of that loss in turning up the
transmit power of the radios. Your net loss is about 2.5-3dB,
however you are able to focus the sectors a little better.

In the long run on future deployments, we will likely use 2 AP's and 4
sectors with 4x2way splitters (MIMO). Once they reach capacity, we'll
 add additional AP's.

 Regards,
 Chuck

We have a pretty large 320 network (200 SM's) and just recently had to
move to 3.5mhz channel sizes because of self-interference between
sectors. The ABAB channel plan will not scale well and you will suffer
high packet loss as a result. Once your cluster hits around 20-30 SM's
 you'll begin to see it.

Moving to a ABCD channel plan has resolved many issues and packet loss
is very minimal now. Customer experience has greatly improved. We have
subscribers at 9 miles so moving to 5mhz channel size is not an option
until the extended range firmware is released. Obviously, once this
software is released and the product gains upper 25mhz approval we can
then run ABCD channel plan in 10mhz. Until then, we're stuck.

3.5mhz channel (75% downlink) will give you 13mb/s in MIMO B. Next
modulation down is around 6mb/s, which is what most SM's link up at.

and have been installing them where we need additional capacity. So
if we have a loaded 900AP (these are already sectorized as that is the
first step we take in adding capacity), we'll take a 320 AP sector and
face it in the same direction as the loaded 900AP, and then convert
customers onto it. Currently, 3 is the maximum number of APs we have
on a single tower. Also, none of our APs are currently GPS-synced,
but we our installations seem to be far enough apart and/or with
enough downtilt, and we have been paying close attention to our
frequency selections, that it hasn't been an issue. I've been waiting
for Last Mile Gear's CTM-2 or was thinking about buying PacketFlux
 SyncInjectors, pending Forrest's comments.

Is the 3.65 solution based on RedMAX or AN-80 ?

We are primarily a PPPoE shop and run a bridged system for that reason.
Each AP has it's own VLAN bridged back to the core. We've done this for
many years without a single issue.

We have different service offerings like VOIP, PPPoE, DHCP, PTPVPN and

Approx. 3,500 wireless subs and 32 tower sites. Our wireless network has

My only point is that I do recommend a routed network vs. bridged. But,
a bridged network can work very well if designed properly.

That makes MIMO and beamforming available at 3.65 GHz, I guess.

What UBNT has shown is that one can go inexpensive alternatives and make
 them good products.
The equivalent in WiMAX is PureWave Networks; their base station can do
MIMO and beamforming and doesn't require an ASN-GW, which was the higher
CAPEX for a small 802.16e deployment until they came along.

Being 16e means you can have 10 MHz channels (best there is in the WiMAX

asian CPEs instead of the vendor lock-in that happens in 16d.

An ASN gateway sits between the Radio Access Network (where there are
only tunnels from the base station to the ASN GW) and the Core
Services Network, where the traffic seen is the user traffic. You can
see a better explation with diagrams in:

 http://www.tutorialspoint.com/wimax/wimax_network_model.htm

ASN gateways are usually expensive, as are the BSC (Base Station
Controllers) that have a similar role in cellular networks. What Pure
Wave is doing is something that was once know as Profile B where the
base station could work without an ASN gateway. Navini gear before
Cisco also worked like this, which is very similar to what an Wi-Fi
 Access-Point usually does.

In larger networks ASN gateways are essential to scaling the network
and the ones I've tested were pretty good. I just don't want to pay
 the price of them.

[WISPA] EBS Licensing

2010-01-21 Thread Eric Muehleisen
I need some information as to how Clear (Clearwire) is fulfilling their
subleasing requirements in the EBS band.

The rules state the following:

1. There must be a minimum of 20 hours per 6 MHz channel per week of
educational use of EBS spectrum.
2. For analog facilities, EBS licensees must retain a right to recapture
an additional amount of 20 more hours per channel per week capacity for
educational purposes.
3. For digital facilities, the EBS licensee must reserve at least 5% of
its transmission capacity for educational purposes.

Can anyone tell me how Clear is fulfilling these rules?

The EBS band consists of 4 6mhz chunks. 5% is around 1mhz. That's easily
achievable I guess. I'm more concerned about rule #1. I can't see Clear
providing Educational Services to these schools. I smell a loophole
somewhere.

Re: [WISPA] DHCP options

2009-10-08 Thread Eric Muehleisen
This has DHCP option 82 written all over it. It's very popular in a
DOCSIS environment. I assume the Alvarion equipment doesn't support
option 82. If this is the case you could do it via an option 82 capable
switch. The switch could tell you what port, MAC, IP, etc.

Good luck.

Okay hard part, without the use of Mac addresses how can we tell which
customers are what and log this into a database. Is there a way to
 control this via the radio?

We don't want to use PPPoE so that option is out, we currently provide
Static IP numbers for everybody but would like to get away from this in

Re: [WISPA] Defective Microtik

Scott,
So do you solder or ground the shielded end at any point or just ground
the drain wire only?

-Eric

Scott Reed wrote:
From way back when I was an electrical engineering student, ground one
end. Or ground every 10 to 20 feet along the run. Otherwise you have
the potential for a ground loop, which means you have current running
through the shield and then through the tower. That can induce it's own
 noise into the cable.

Here is the key: Single Point Ground.
The idea is to do your best to keep everything at the same voltage
potential. So everything comes back to one place.

So, while Jayson is right to a point about creating an antenna, the
solution is different than he suggests. You want to have the drain wire
do what it's name says, drain the stray signals to ground. For some
installations, using the metal connector on one end works. That is,
assuming that the board ground in directly connected to the single point
ground. My personal preference is to directly connect the drain wire to
the ground point, but the key is that you have one ground point and no
current flowing through the ground wires.

 Jayson Baker wrote:

If you don't ground both ends you're creating a huge antenna to pick up
static and drain it right into your board/POE.
Always use shielded connectors on both ends, and ground both ends.

install lets cal this the radio side use plastic connector and inside use
grounded one with tall the other lightning goodies. What is the consensus
on this while we are on topic :)

Re: [WISPA] Default a AN80i?

2009-07-26 Thread Eric Muehleisen
Sorry,

1. Power-off the AN-80i PoE power adapter. Remove the network Ethernet
cable and connect your computer directly to the PoE power adapter
'INPUT' (Ethernet port requires Cat 5e cross-over cable).

2. Open a command prompt window on the PC and enter the command:

telnet 192.168.25.2 Do not press Enter key at this time

3. Power-on the AN-80i PoE power adapter for over 30 seconds.

4. Power-off the AN-80i PoE power adapter for 7 seconds.

5. Power-on the AN-80i PoE power adapter, wait 15 seconds, and then
press the Enter key on the PC (to start the Telnet session). The Telnet
session must connect to the AN-80i within 10 to 30 seconds from when the
AN-80i starts the second time.

6. When prompted, login using 'admin' as the user name and 'admin' as
password.

7. Use the following commands to save a new IP address:

 ipaddr IP Address Enter

save config Enter

If required, use the 'user' command to enter new username and password
information or the 'save' command to reset all parameters to factory
default settings.

8. Power-off the AN-80i, restore the network connections, and restore power

For Terrain data, set up RM to automatically grab the correct terrain

 - Open RM
 - Options

 - Internet ftp directory - other - Enter the following ftp appending
 your region at the end
 ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version2/SRTM1/

 To determine your region:
 ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version2/SRTM1/Region_definition.jpg

 Check ZIP

So if you are region 2 your FTP address will look like:

Let me know when you have this set up.

As far as payment, you can do PayPal without an account - just send it

 Chuck,

I think someone (read - as in very many) have stretched the truth with
your survey. I could be wrong, (not the first time) but according to
 your
poll the 43 WISPs have an average of 1153.418 subscribers each!

It appears that 27 of the 43 WISPs used Canopy and those 27 ISPs
 count for
a total of 1162.3 subs each while the total of the rest of the WISPs
combined (16) have an average of 1138.3 subscribers

I guess there could be some really huge WISPs out here that
 participated in
the survey that I am not aware of.

 Cool survey THANKS!!

 Mac

If you want to win my undying affection, get a couple dozen vendors to

I'd consult the vendor you got your equipment from. They should be able
to help you get your deployment off the ground. If you'd like I could
provide (offline) you with some screenshots of a basic setup.

Re: [WISPA] 3.65 SUO initial config

2008-08-30 Thread Eric Muehleisen
John runs the Redmax AN-100U which is limited to 23dbm transmit power.
However, the AN-100UX is limited to 36dbm. With a sector antenna at the
base station running 27-28dbm transmit power you could easily do 2+
miles NLOS with 64QAM/16QAM which would give you about 11mb/s down and
4mb/s up @ 60% downlink ratio.

FYI...In our experience the omni setup really hurts with the AP hearing
the SU's. The uplink modulation degrades substantially vs. a sector setup.

I would say that 3.65 is it's a blend of 900mhz and 2.4ghz in terms of
penetrability.

Ping, CPU utilization, PPS. Basically anything that has an SNMP OID.

Re: [WISPA] pppoe server, Redback capability of other solutions?

2008-02-07 Thread Eric Muehleisen
Redback is untouchable in terms of PPPoE aggregation. Cisco is really
the only other Router out there that is of Redback's caliber. We
currently terminate close to 15,000 subscribers using a Redback SE 400.
Attached is our current CPU usage.

I'm in the process of moving over to another upstream provider. I'm
working with them closely to get service to my county PUD system that
uses pppoe tunnels for virtually all end user connections. ( I know
that I can get a vlan, but the cost is prohibitive at the moment)

So, I'm their first beta tester in my area and they have this used
Redback router. First there were problems that were to be solved with
a firmware upgrade, now they have a hardware failure without a spare.
I'm not familiar with this router at all, but discussed it with their
 sysadmin.

Apparently the need is for something that can handle 2000 sessions and
has full 100Mbps NICs and can support that speed. I'm not a pppoe
expert, but would a decent PC, with 4/8GB of RAM and mikrotik SW
installed handle something like this??? Butch? or other MT experts?
Or is this requirement way out of the MT league?

For my own reasons, I want to get them going, promptly! Any
 suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

2008-01-25 Thread Eric Muehleisen
I'm sorry guys. Price was not discussed. A quote will be delivered to me
shortly. I will post cost as soon as I see it. I'm hoping early next week.

I do have a sales order for one Redline RedMAX base station with outdoor
CPE if anyone is interested...offlist.

FYI...I'm not in any shape or form affiliated with Airspan or Redline.
We are an Internet Service Provider serving the greater Midwestern Kansas.

If Redline's 15 mbit throughput per 7.5 MHz is correct and is similar to

 throughput.

I'm working on an Enterprise level service, so it seems like Redline's

 IIRC,

3.65 ghz rules allow 1 watt EIRP per each mhz of bandwidth, thus a 7.5
Mhz Radio would be allowed 7.5 Watts of EIRP, 10 Mhz radio would be 10
 Watts EIRP ...

Redline cert does not reflect this... don't know why

Airspan certification does get really close to it

Mind me but 10 Watts EIRP if allot (about 40 db)

Vendors should seek maybe 15 or 20 mhz channels

As much as I like seeing One Ring's name over and over I figured I
switch the subject line to match the tread.

Mike's comments below are accurate with regard to Redline's equipment.
However, it should be noted that Redline was not able to get their gear
certified at the full power output allowable for 3.65. It is for this
reason that Redline does not believe its gear will work in rural
markets. Remember, 3.65 was originally supposed to be for the rural
market, which means either Redline went wrong somewhere or the FCC did.
Additionally, Redline has not sought to get its indoor CPE certified for

3.65 because of the power issue. That means urban operators are not able

to offer self-install options that would greater speed up the rollout
 process.

I believe WISPA should be working with the 3.65 radio vendors and the
FCC to get things fixed such that there will be a greater opportunity
for operators to provide services using 3.65.

Nope. I have it with Moto 900 Mhz AP's. Will completely lock it down to
where it takes a minute or longer just to access it by telnet to reboot
it. I can login to Mikrotik and kill all P2P connections and immediately
access the 900 Mhz AP after the connections clear.

Doug,
I will second Forrest's comments. We have been running VOIP on Canopy
for several years now will great success. The key is setting the high
priority queues and DiffServ settings. We also tagged VOIP traffic in a
high priority DHCP VLAN. We've found that PPPoE encapsulation really
struggles with VOIP. Are you using PPPoE?

transmitting 1-3 miles over a salt water ¾ mile wide river.

On the canopy side: Two things:

1) The secret of making canopy work at extended ranges is buying
cyclone AP's from last mile gear. http://www.lastmilegear.com. I
regularly get 10+ miles LOS with a reflector at 5.7, and 20+ miles LOS
with a reflector at 2.4. Without the cyclone APs you can get roughly
half that. The one thing you may have missed is that canopy is
multipath sensitive, so moving the SM even 6-8 inches could make the
difference between a great link and no link - especially with a big RF
mirror like the river you are talking about.

2) VoIP on canopy works really well when set correctly. Correctly
means having the correct (not necessarily the latest) version in the
AP and SM, and setting prioritization in both the AP and SM for voice
traffic. In addition, you need to watch and make sure that you have
bandwidth set correctly and are getting the speeds you expect. If you
had a marginal link, there is every possibility that you simply did
not have sufficient bandwidth available to you in the upstream

Re: [WISPA] PPPoE The good, the bad and the ugly please

2007-04-09 Thread Eric Muehleisen

Scriv,
We use Redback for PPPoE authentication to around 15,000 subs. It's a
breeze for customer accounting and really simplifies routing static
IP's, subnets and private contexts. We are also in the VOIP arena where
PPPoE has failed us. PPPoE encapsulation will strip most of your QoS.
Keep that in mind.

Are any of you running PPPoE on your client connections back to a
PPPoE concentrator? Is this a good approach? I have heard that one big
advantage of this is that you can setup Radius to set everything up
for authentication very easily and that you can set every client up as
their own individual subnet so that they are all routed back to your
PPPoE concentrator / router in your office. I would think this would
address many of the client to client radio traffic concerns of CALEA
without changing any APs. Isn't this a fix for that one concern? Does
that make sense? If not then why not?

I like the idea of easily managing my accounts for turning them on or
off for non-payment and automatically setting bandwidth rules. I use
Radius in a big way for my existing dialup customer base and this
sounds like the berries to me. I welcome other thoughts from those who
are using or considering using PPPoE or similar techniques. Any
alternatives which work better?

Happy Easter guys and gals,
Scriv

Re: [WISPA] PPPoE The good, the bad and the ugly please

2007-04-09 Thread Eric Muehleisen
Once you encapsulate VoIP in PPPoE then QoS is unavailable to any device
in the middle; which is where most of the bottlenecks in bandwidth are.
So you gain something and lose something more important.

We have moved all of our VOIP subscribers to DHCP w/ VLAN priorities
that are mapped to Diffserve and related VoIP priorities however. This
cannot be done easily or at all via PPPoE.

You could, but I think your QoS would get very crippled. Each device
between your ATA/PC and core router/softswitch would need to be able to
read your QoS markings within the PPPoE encapsulation.

You simply cannot prioritize tagged packets within PPPoE encapsulation
end-to-end very efficiently. That has been our experience.

so, ok, can't you use pppoe for just client - tower ? QoS them all
right at the tower sites...

Re: [WISPA] Service Offerings - Competing

2007-02-04 Thread Eric Muehleisen
We have a stipulation in our AUP when the customer signs the initial
contract that prohibits maximizing their connection for a sustained
period of time. We enforce a 3 strike rule then kick 'em off-line if
violated. If they choose to go with another provider then good riddance.
Let the competition deal with them.

I am going to be specific here

What mechanism do you have in place to 'protect' your network from the person
that downloads 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you sold me a connection that
was 256k for $39.99 I would feel that I have a right to use it as much as I
want.

I am not saying bit cap, I am saying tiered pricing. I am sure that most here
can break their clients into 3 groups;

1. the people that rarely use their Internet, possibly 300-500 megabytes per
month.

2. The average user that probably uses 2-5 Gigabytes per month.

3. The bandwidth hog that is using 20 Gigs plus per month and complains when
their speed teest falls for 5 k bits per second.

My argument is that ISPs need to have a mechanism to make the people in the
last group either pay their fair share, or go somewhere else.

Patrick,
I would be very interested in obtaining this doc. My wireless department

happy with. However, we are always looking for greener pastures.
