Hi Ted, Noticed your company based in PORTERVILLE. I am originally from the Reedley/Sanger area and my family had a resturant and men's clothing store in Porterville long time ago (Figueroa's). One of my other friend's is deploying wireless in Orange Cove. I also work with Integrity Networks in Fresno. Do you know them? http://www.integritynet.com/ Did Clearwire ever deploy their network in Visalia? [WISPA] New WISPA Member - Ted Olson of OACYS Technology
Please join me in welcoming Ted Olson of OACYS Technology as WISPA's newest Principal Member. Here is a little about Ted and his company: OACYS (pronounced as in "oasis") turned 25 this year, I founded it in 1982 after many years as a military and commercial helicopter pilot. There's no connection, except for maybe an odd sense of adventure and a certain lack of good sense. We worked from CP/M to DOS and Windows and networks and software development, then in 1995 bought some bandwidth and a case of modems and became an ISP, the first in our semi-rural community of about 30K then (now 50K). In the late 90s we tangled with PacBell over the privilege of reselling their DSL. We're a charter member of CISPA and spent quite a bit of money on that battle, until I got fed up and decided that anything further in that direction was going to be a very bumpy road that would eventually turn into a dead-end. We're pretty independent sorts so we took a deep breath, white-boarded a new game plan, and turned exclusively to wireless. Never looked back. Karlnet stuff first, now mostly Trango in all the usual unlicensed bands. I was chairman of CISPA's first wireless committee, but got way too busy with our own business to have enough time to do that justice so I passed the baton. We're still members, but with only a few (and far between) wireless exceptions that group is still fighting the DSL battle so we don't really participate any more. I just posted a reference to WISPA in reply to a couple of enquiries on their list about 700 MHz, maybe you'll pick up another new member or two. We cover around 2,500 square miles of mostly rural area at the base of the Sierra Nevadas, and also up into several small foothill and mountain valleys that may never be served by DSL or cable. Wouldn't matter to us anyway, we own those markets now and our service is so good we'd be very hard to unseat. We have a dozen employees averaging close to ten years each, and around 2000 subs (60-40% residential and business). Our only wireless competition is Clearwire, but they're not affecting our business (they may be helping) and our growth is steady. Our CLEC application is now going through the approval process at CPUC. We've started selling VoIP (Asterisk box) and now need the advantages of a CLEC, previously it wasn't worth the cost. We've been aware of WISPA for a long time, but it was a recent article about CALEA that got us thinking we should probably join. I've been lurking in your mail list for a while, just to see what's going on ... we might be interested in supporting your 700 MHz efforts. We've of course been filing 477s for several years. Unfortunately for us there are apparently enough small cities elsewhere in our county to disqualify our CMA (150) as being rural. The extra 20% would have been nice but it's not really a deterrent, providing I can get some idea of what a realistic bid might be from our perspective. It looks like the average award in Auction 66 went for around $12 million, which would be WAY out of our reach. I'd like to know more about your previous experience with FCC auctions. That alone makes it worthwhile to join and help support your committee and lobbying efforts, is that still open at $1000? Our time is limited (just like yours), but we'll help as much as we can. Cheers, -Ted Note to Ted and others from Scriv I have extended the $1000 to join the 700 MHz Committee for a bit longer. I am guessing this deal will go away for goos in a couple of weeks though. If you are on the fence for getting into the 70 MHz efforts hen please join now by sending your check for $1000 to: WISPA Attn: 700 MHz Committee PO Box 1582 Mt. Vernon, IL. 62864 We appreciate your WISPA support whether you have an interest in 700 MHz or not. That goes for all of you out there who support WISPA. A big thank you to all. [WISPA] New WISPA Member - PoGoWave Communications, Inc.
The new members in WISPA are flooding in lately. We sure appreciate all this momentum. With a large portion of our industry joining forces here we will be much more effective in our efforts to lobby for regulatory and legislative efforts to help our industry. Thanks to PoGoWave and all of the members who have shown their support by paying their dues and helping out in committees, traveling to D.C. and many other efforts. Here is a little more information about PoGoWave Communications, Inc.: "PogoWave Communications was formed about five years ago to serve the Internet needs of western Sonoma County wirelessly. In February 2006, there was a major change in management of PogoWave and the beginning of a more structured operation of the company. Western Sonoma County is made up largely of rugged rolling terrain, heavily forested in 100 to 150 foot redwood trees or rolling grasslands used for grazing. The main servers are located at our site on English Hill in Sebastopol, with its 150 foot tower we provide our main distribution and point-to-point transmissions to four strategically located repeater sites." Here is another WISP operator who has made the decision join and to help make WISPA the place where WISPs pull together to form our industry. Congratulations for this step for helping us all to reach our goals as an industry. We appreciate all the WISPs who have made this step and look forward to seeing our power in numbers working together to achieve our goals. Welcome Mark McElvy of Accubak Data Systems in Salem, Missouri. This is yet another husband and wife team. I personally know Salem, Missouri well as it is the last stop on my way to the beautiful Current River which I canoe every July. Welcome Mark and wife! AccuBak Data Systems, Inc. was originally formed, in Houston Texas 1996, as a network consulting and offsite backup service for small and medium size businesses. We moved to the rural town of Salem, MO in the fall of 1999. Here we continued our backup service and business network consulting. In 2003 we expanded into nationwide dialup and satellite broadband. Finally in October of 2005, we started offering 2.4GHz wireless to residential and small business customers. Working as a husband and wife team taking these baby steps to a growing business has been quite an adventure. Learning all the ins and outs of the Wireless industry is definitely proving to be a challenge, but we are looking forward WISPA making that a little easier on us. And of course, if anyone is interested in having us assist them with remote backups, we would be happy to assist. Please help me welcome Chris and Kathryn Cooper of Intelliwave LLC. They are one of WISPA's newest Principal Members. We have quite a run of new membership of late. We thank each and every one of you for taking this important step to help show support for your industry. WISPA is the voice of WISPs and we need all your voices. Each of you that have joined have done something great for your industry. You have shown you want to stand and be counted among your peers. You show you care enough to be a professional and to make sure this industry has the representation we need. Together we can all work for a better industry and I am proud to welcome Chris and Kathryn among our ranks. Here are a few words from Chris about himself, his wife and their company: Intelliwave, LLC was founded by Chris and Kathryn Cooper in 2001. Working together as a husband/wife team has been a great experience for us. Prior to founding Intelliwave, we founded and operated a regional dial-up ISP. We are located in Athens, Ohio in the SE corner of the state. Our services include 900 Mhz rural residential, ptp business and long haul private data networks. Additionally, our proximity to Ohio University and its 20,000+ student population gives us the opportunity to offer Internet services to off campus student housing. We provide these services via wireless, our own Dslams and an ad-hoc mesh. I’ve found the WISPA list to be an invaluable resource for us and am proud to finally become a full member of WISPA. John’s constant admonitions to join were creating some heavy guilt on my part. I’m glad to put that behind me. Mark Nash from UnwiredOnline.Net has been part of this WISPA list for a while and now he has made his connection to WISPA official by becoming a Principal WISPA Member. We thank you, Mark, for formalizing your relationship with WISPA and for making your contribution to the efforts which will grow our industry. Here is more about Mark and UnwiredOnline. Net: Unwired started in April of 2001 with 4 partners (now only one owner) as the first broadband Internet provider in Junction City, OR. Since that time, cable and phone companies have deployed their services, but since the company has focused on rural subscribers it has seen little churn due to competition. Initially, Unwired deployed a BreezeCom BreezeAccess system with Trango backhauls, but sought to lower its CPE cost and moved away to YDI/Karlnet/Terabeam/Proxim turbocell-based PoE gear. They are currently deploying Mikrotik APs and Tranzeo CPEs due to the cost and ease of installation for lower-labor-cost techs. With 250 users spread across 7 AP sites around the Southern Willamette Valley in Oregon, up and coming challenges will be getting more users per sector, upgrading backhauls to support traffic, and expanding the wireless network footprint or establishing new POPs altogether. Mark Nash owns Unwired, and has 20 years experience in PC networking. Prior to getting into the wireless world in 2001, he worked at Oregon State University as a consultant to those departments and colleges who ran their own Novell servers, a system with 350+ servers. He developed a specialty in enterprise administration of large NDS systems. Mark has personally installed all wireless customers up to January 2007. RE: [WISPA] New WISPA Member - Welcome Ross
Welcome aboard and congratulations for joining the most serious and earnest of WISP associations. Do not be made uneasy from the debate going on now that I launched. Vigorous debate is healthy and necessary. The debates over the language of the U.S. Constitution was rancorous, often barely civil, but as much was at stake, the serious people keep at it until some consensus was achieved. Much was left unaddressed in the end for the sake of unity (e.g. the slave issue was basically tabled), but it served as a literally revolutionary starting point that has carried us, more or less intact, to today.
