Subject: is there a way to force legend text shows in TWO lines?

1) Can anyone absolutely positively confirm that without legend a site
will cause suffering to screen reader's user or cause a traumatic
effect to accessibility?

I think that whether or not a legend is essential depends on the
length and content of your form.

If it's a multipage extravaganza then legends would certainly have
accessibility benefits, but if it's just a simple form, with no
distinct sets of questions, then just correctly using labels etc
would satisfy most people. Using headers, legends and labels to
indicate the same information has got to be more of an annoyance than anything.

I have found instances where a header, hidden legend, hidden label
all read name.

  Seconded ... (or 10th, whatever!)

You (one) really have to be able to handcode. I use Dreamweaver but I always
have it open in both views, never just the design view, and I frequently swap
into the code view only and work on it that way. It's the only way to see
what's going on, and fix up things that aren't working. It's the only way to
make sure you are making an accessible website.

I seem to remember I originally learnt from a book called something like
'Teach yourself HTML in 14 days'. It worked! Plus there are heaps of places
online where you can learn too. Some offer online tutorials like the ones
mentioned here, plus plenty of others. Some places have 6-week courses that
cost about $US25. eg http://www.lvsonline.com . I've done a few courses there
and found them pretty good. I'm sure there are lots of other similar places.

  Good luck ... :)

Re: [WSG] First Attempt

2008-11-25 Thread kate
Hello Mustafa,

I guess for a first one, well second really. My first was back in 2000 with not
even a table just images and text and someone gave me one or two awards lolol

This new one should be a big improvement as I have learnt quite a lot from the
lists I am on now. Its amazing how just watching questions and answers teaches
you some of this stuff.

HTML I am not too thick aabout but CSS apart from the very basic I *do need to
study.

I do need to study how frames work (naming) too.

Many thanks Mustafa!

Well, I started with Dreamweaver's design view, since, that was what I was
thought. My first site was a table crap :) I didn't know what was going on.

I decided to learn the nuts bolts of HTML. My next site was table based but
with a valid code.

Then, I joined various lists, communities and saw what really was going on.
Thought myself CSS. My first CSS site took a fair amount of time and I faced
lots of newbie issues. However, with a little bit of research I overcame them.
Now, I just hate the thought of table based layouts. However, that is not the
topic of discussion :)

I still use Dreamweaver, with display styles switched off (View - Style
Rendering - Display Styles). For some minor edits I use Textpad on a PC. Its
just a matter of preference.

Hi Kate,

For a first webpage you're doing pretty well - you have some images
there and have changed the background colour and text colour on the
page.

However, using the Dreamweaver design view approach will not give you
the best end results, or teach you the best practices. Peter's link
gives you some really good tips on moving beyond the elementary use of
Dreamweaver's design view, and point 5 - validate your page to find
basic errors is a definite step you don't want to miss.

Other than that, you may want to look at following online tutorials.
For example, your menus can be enhanced by following some easy steps
(for example,
http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listutorial/horizontal_introduction.htm)
which you can then edit as you like. You will be able to find many
tutorials for page layout, table styling, menus etc. by searching Google
and people here will also be able to give you pointers on good
tutorials.

Then moving forward when you feel more confident with editing the html
css from these tutorials, you will be able to build your own menus and
eventually the entire website from scratch based on your custom design
:)

All the best,
Rachel

As someone who has read the post, in Dreamweaver 8, to follow along with
Todd's statement, choose (File -- New) and under the General tab choose
Starter Pages. You may choose from the list DW8 has. The rest I agree with. Try
learning some of the code from the pre-existing sites, modify one section of
code in Code/Design view, hit the refresh button in the properties menu at the
bottom, and see/study the results.

12 years ago on asking advice in starting down this road, a very wise
engineer told me,

Always code by hand. Use notepad or similar...

While that was a difficult undertaking, it is the best advice I have had.
I still use a basic editor on occasion, one such as cute html or similar
is actually fine. Everyone has their fav, and that's ok, as long as it
doesn't do everything for you and one learns nothing.

But I have developed a system and basic web standards template system that
works, so I have many examples of what I use all the time for clients set
in new templates.

Now I mostly work with a CMS such as ExpressionEngine and have developed a
Web Standards template system that I modify as needed for all my clients.

I firmly believe that reinventing the wheel for every site is not the best
practice. And that browser hacks
may be sometimes required. A lot of the time not, and we may end up
using them to save time.

When one gets a solid foundation and understanding that hand coding
offers, one is never stuck in understanding the underlining principles and
what is wrong when things just don't work as expected.

I don't know why it don't work, dreamweaver did it isn't the way to
impress clients! lol

Best viewed in anything you want is a good label to apply to your sites,
and perhaps what Web Standards is all about.

Good luck, do it the hard way and you will know the road well.

thought i'd throw in my two cents.

firstly i was in your position a couple years ago, using dreamweaver. at
a certain point i realized i didn't know what i was doing or what was
going wrong when things didn't view properly. i hadn't heard anything
about box models, didn't know what padding or margins were, and basically
didn't understand anything about html. so i set dreamweaver aside and
took the plunge. fortunately on the css-d list, someone was kind enough
to take me under their wing and hold my hand... much like you are
receiving here. it was a steep climb, yet i still have a few hairs left

a help I came across 3 years ago was Layout Gala, a series of layouts by

I found looking at these in an editor, and making changes such as adding
inner div's taught me a lot.

They have been rock solid across all browsers and op systems.

I'm not saying everyone should make all sites with these, but saying
these and others done by members here are a definite shortcut to
learning, preferred from stating by scrating your head and looking at a
blank screen in an editor lol.

Of course there are many other methods that can and should be learned,

in this group!), have a ton of important and vital information.

It's not rocket science, honest. And the sooner you throw aside the
crutch of WYSIWYG design, the better developer you'll be.

Certainly, in a /web standards/ context, you'll be looking more at
the semantics of your content and markup, rather than drawing pretty

for flash, paths to the files is a normal error that causes that.
Depending if it's on your desktop or on the web, there is security on
access to local vs remote files to consider as well.

If it is a blank space likely the swf file cannot be found
If online a link usually solves it ;)

Hopefully this can get back on web standards topic...or someone may come
along with a big stick...lol

due to the firewall and proxy that we have setup here. It couldn't seem to

Subject: [WSG] Images Paragraph Width

Hi,

I have a problem which I feel like I should know but apparently don't. :-)

I have an image which my CSS doesn't know (and will never know) the size
of. The image is in a paragraph with the class of 'img'.

   p class=imgimg src=images/image.gif alt=pic /br /Regular
   Image/p

What I want to do is put a border around the paragraph (not the image so
it goes around the text as well). What happens is the border winds up the
width of the whole page even though I have margin and padding set to zero.

The CSS is:

   p.img{
   padding: 0.3em;
   margin: 0em;
   border: 2px solid red;
   font-size: 0.9em;
   }

How can I stop the border stretching the entire width of the page.
Unfortunately in this case float is not an option and I have a limitation
in that the HTML needs to remain as basic as possible. The CSS can be as
complicated as anything but the HTML needs to be simple.

Hopefully someone will have come across this problem before and be able to
point me in the right direction.

Thanks to all.
IceKat.

On a more positive note - you could point out that having an embedded player
would allow the band to offer the user a choice of music, which would be a
better option than alienating many users. (Offering a client a 'better option'
usually goes down a lot better than 'don't do that!')

From an accessibility angle, it shouldn't be too hard to see that those
people who are going to be most affected by this, ie those using a screen
reader on top of a normal browser, are likely to be those least able to deal
with turning if off, whatever the mechanism. As others have said, the easiest
option for most users is to kill the browser/window/tab.

Hi,

same here - I personally hate autoplay on site, I'm gone in a sec
I also think this does affect anyone - personal preference or not - people
can be caught out by this, in office environments (as mentioned before) as well
as impaired users

And though a band site might warrant the autoplay - I'd still try to allow
site visitor's to be in control of whether or not to listen to the music. As
the site is about music - a clearly visible player is likely to be included
anyway, allowing easy access to the band's tracks.

Not sure what the guidelines say on this - but when I teach best practices
for webdesign I advise my students to always give the user the control and not
bombard them with anything they might not expect.

Just my thoughts...

Maybe a mac thing but I have have a variety of FF versions (as well as
Moz,

Opera, Safari, IE and Netscape versions) going back in time on one laptop
and can open any as needed. The only limitation I've noticed with Moz
related browsers is that you can only open one at a time.

Hello everyone. I am pretty new to Dreamweaver and CSS and Flash. I have
created pieces for a new website and I desperately want to make the jump to
using CSS for all placement...but don't know where to start. My client is
patiently waiting and I am pulling my hair out by now. A comp of what I am
trying to get my master page to look like can be found here:

  http://www.thewowfactorcakes.com/comp.html

And here is the page that is up and waiting for some placement help:

  http://www.thewowfactorcakes.com/

I need first of all the make the white background go away for both the
handwriting swf file and the fade in and fade out images file below that.

I created this page from a one column fixed centered template in Dreamweaver
CS3.
Can anyone come to my rescue? Sincerely, mango2020

Can anyone give me a clear example/explanation of the difference
between the alt attribute and the title attribute? How about a real
'attributes for dummies' reference?? The difference seems very slight
to me...

Hi Tom,

I may be wrong here but I've always worked on the premise that alt is
alternative text for when the image isn't available (For whatever
reason) and the title is the title of the image. An example would be
alt=Customer Care Logo title=We Care about you

However as I am always learning I may learn something here today.

As many have already commented I apply caution when using flash (because of
it creates extra work, because users like Sven disable it by default and much
more besides)

The thing is some clients care initially more for the visual appeal (things
bouncing around etc) of websites and not for features that improve the
accessibility or user experience overall.

others have made points about ensuring content is available to all. In a lot
of cases it is possible to display the same content in a no flash format
(server side scripting helps a great deal - not writing script srcs or
codeblocks to the page [setting this in a user setting session var])

I make use of swfObject to replace a summary of the content that the swf
displays, often with links to further info

of the extent of work produced by this can mushroom, and become unwieldy.
admittedly this is much easier if the site is not full browser flash, but if
the site is small and all the content is loaded in dynamically

Flash can recreate (often poorly) things that are achieved with traditional
html - deep linking
And this is then an aspect of the site that must be cared for, increasing the
overall complexity (and therefore potential err) - there if a lot to bear in
mind here

also there is shadowbox (by Michael Jackson [not the former jackson 5 pop
sensation]) that does a real nice job in displaying all kinds of content
lightbox (lokesh dhakar) style of the page - this is what Ben Buchanan was
refering to I think - http://mjijackson.com/shadowbox/index.html

Accessibility and search engine visibility of Flash in most cases is zero.
I've only heard of one Flash site that was considered accessible and it made a
lot of news at the time!

Flash only reliably works for users with no physical or technical barriers;
and search engines can't read Flash in any useful manner. I generally don't
like the usability aspects either - that's subjective I guess, but I've found
Flash is generally used when someone thought HTML didn't make them look cool
enough. Which means they wanted lots of stuff to bounce and flash and so on ;)

Essentially you should only ever add a Flash layer over the top of XHTML;
and give users the choice between the two. Flash isn't evil, but *only offering
Flash* is evil.

  Subject: [WSG] Colour accessibility/ usability

  Hi,

We've been asked to change our colour scheme on our websites to fit into our
corporate colour scheme. We currently use blue, and the colour we've been
asked to change to is now red. Our site will be using a solid background, with
white for the content area (along the lines of news.com.au). Our concern is
that such a large amount of red may cause accessibility/ usability issues (we
are not only talking about the background colour but also the navigation). We
may possibly have some say into the shading of the red, but for the moment
think of a nice bright colour (#A80D35).

What we need more information about is how the colour red can affect
readability. I have done research, and I know about the w3c colour contrast
algorithm. I've also had a look at the psychology of the different colours and
that red is associated with anger and intensity.

What I am wanting to know, does anyone have any failure/ success stories of
using a large amount of red on a site without it adversely affecting users. We
also wanted to know if there was a particular range that might cause headaches
in some users. I would also be interested to know of any research into what
borders on acceptable luminosity. For example, I know in a couple of mockups
that we have done, the red has been very glary, and makes focusing on the
content quite difficult. Unfortunately, this being a personal opinion, we need
the research to back it up with.

Any help that you can give will be appreciated.

  Regards,
  Linda

what you want for the border color in your CSS.

yeah, i went back and saw my problem. it seems the color i thought was red
was really blue. had my hex figures backwards.

with your example you have a border around the image. i thought that the
original poster wanted an underline. with a 3px bottom padding stated you get
the underline.

The (imho) best way to do this is by using the Man in Blue's FooterStickAlt:

I have problem with the footer of my website: www.awayback.com it is not
staying at bottom of the page. Things are fine in case of low
resolution i.e. 1024x768 but in high resolution screens (1200x1024)
footer is hanging mid way and not at bottom of the page.

Hi Amrider,

I would suggest adding another div id=wrapper around div id=masthead
... div id=footer with a min-height of 100%:

div#wrapper {
min-height: 100%;
}

This should keep the footer at the bottom of the page on short pages.

I hope this post is allowed. Just had a call from a client to say he cannot
see all of his website. He does not seem very computer literate. He says he
can see the first bit ( header and the navigation bar underneath the header),
but below is just a green blank page.

I can see nothing wrong with the site which has been up for ages and am
thinking it is his computer though I have no idea what could be wrong. He uses
IE.

Is there anything I can get him to check.. Url is www.bourkebridgeinn.com.au

  Thanks

Don't mean to be negative, but NVU is a pretty poor choice: even its own home
page admits that!
(Last release was 2005, and that should never have been classed as version 1,
and no development work being undertaken.)

As far as I can see, the best choice on the open source route is SeaMonkey.

Re: [WSG] Dreamweaver8

2008-04-06 Thread kate

Thanks Nancy,

I do have some Web mags I bought last year there should be one on there as
the mag is Dreamweaver monthly or was.

I was looking on the Web and found this lol don't know who it was - no name:
The latest version of Dreamweaver - Dreamweaver 8 - has been launched today.
I was lucky enough to be involved with the Beta and so have been working
with this new version for several months. So, is it worth the upgrade?

http://www.rachelandrew.co.uk/archives/2005/09/13/dreamweaver-8/

Oh wait Nancy..could be Drew M???

Now, where did I put those mags :D

Thanks Nancy!

Hi Kate:

Adobe doesn't offer downloads of older versions once a newer version has
come out. The only way I know to get a 30 day trial at this point is to
find a CD with a 30 day trial of it on a Dreamweaver 8 book .. many of
them come with CDs that contain sample files and a trial of the program.
Of course, after the 30 days, the upgrade would be to CS3 so then you
would be back where you started.

Perhaps you could also find one on EBay or in a 3rd party store on
clearance .. be careful especially with the former that it's not a
bootlegged copy but comes with a valid serial.

AFAIK, those are about the only options since DW8 is a version and a half
behind.

To be honest, I wouldn't use Dreamweaver, I use Aptana Studio and from
the coding side it works great and it's free.
