I agree with everyone!!! NEVER EVER give out your information like that. Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_engineering_(computer_security)because it sounds like a Social-Engineering attack!! Re: [WSG] Question on servers and Email campaign
As a professional I would advise your client to run a mil from this supplier. There are plenty of ways to send email marketing safely, securely, intelligently and usefully, like Campaign Monitor, mailbuild, and other conscientious, responsible mailers. There is nothing more sinister than buying a mailing list that requires root access. Re: [WSG] Question on servers and Email campaign
Giving anyone outside your business root access to your sever is NOT wise at all. I was previously sharing a dedicaed server with a friend that turned out to be one of the largest bot farmers in Australia, and subsequently led the server being dDOS'd. Giving these people root access leaves any other client's on the server at their mercy, and if your other client's find out, they could have ground to sue you, especially if they're under the impression or your contracted to provide secure hosting. Personally I would report them to the spam cops, 'cos to me, that's what they look like to be. I bet their software is just a set of spam bots, and could possibly be used to infect site visitor''s systems from any of the sites you host. And therefore give them more bots to use to send spam. Sherri hey.. I agree with Thiru on that - you should NEVER give out your root access to anybody... Its far 2 risky... There are 2 alternatives. Either a) set up a normal user account with SSH access (this would give them access to their area of the server only) OR b) Research the software and install it yourself (and charge the client appropriately for your time) I hope they help David Fuller Developer magickweb Web:http://www.magick.com.au Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Thiru Yoganathan Sent: Wednesday, 12 November 2008 11:01 AM To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Subject: RE: [WSG] Question on servers and Email campaign Hi Sherri I think you have done the right thing, giving away root access means you possibly could become quite vulnerable.I think. There is only one person who gets any kind of shell access on my servers - thats me. Clients get restricted sftp if they really need it - and can justify it to me. If your client insists on getting something like this done, set them up with a box from slicehost.com or a mediatemple.net DV server. Then they can give root access to the box and if they are spamming people the rest of your clients don't their mail blacklisted too. Best get the client to sign up for the service so if they get booted they are the ones liable for any charges. If your client doesn't understand the implications of the request, then you are probably best off without them.
