Mac A. Roni, I'll respond to your recent post line by line, but first I want
to make sure we're both talking about the same thing when we talk about the
ability to determine right from wrong. It appears you use the term
'morality' for that, and so do I. I define 'morality' the same way it is

Is anti-semitism alright in Zen Buddhism? I realize that everything is good and

I enjoyed the story and I understand the zen point. In different times, we
might have alternately have said that the monk was being humble, because his
acts were those he would have expected any good person to perform, not those of
a hero. He was a monk.

Hi Anthony,
Yes, on my recent Vipassana retreat I was surprised to find out how 'stripped
down' of mythology and spirituality Theravada is. I believed quite the
opposite. In fact it seems much less a religion than Mahayana is, especially
because of the Bodhisattva ideal (which of course does no

Anthony,
I don't consider myself a nihilist, though I can see how nihilists

Hi Edgar,
That is why I assume you are a nihilist. Wait a moment. Doctors (non-religious)
have concluded consciousness survives the body. Though they cannot prove what
comes after death. That is a scientific conclusion so far.

Bill,
I spent two years in Thailand building a chemical plant. But I was too busy
making my worldly living to interact with local monks. However, I read a lot
about good monks such as Ajahn Chah and Puthathat (maybe a wrong spelling). In
my opinion, Theravada represents an 'original' Buddhism,
Margie,
It makes good sense. When I worked in Thailand 18 years ago, my Thai vocabulary
was just enough for bargaining in a fish market. Now it is much smaller. But I
still recognize the word 'puying' next to 'woman', so I knew it is translation

Margie,
All good stuff. We discuss things like this routinely on the
Evolutionary Psychology group where that would be pretty tame
compared to some of the topics. Though there are a few benighted
