I was trying to remember a very old chant that I was given over twenty years ago, but the only thing that popped in my mind was this phrase: O ahm naya bendigo. I don't even know if it actually means anything or if it's just gibberish. What makes a chant authentic? Does it depend on where the source is or how it comes to us? Or is it all BS? Re: [Zen] Re: Are Retarded Kids Sentient Beings
Charlie, It is that very attitude that is wrong. Warehousing kids based on their perceived mental faculties is harmful in the end to these children. What you describe is better classified as office politics rather than an actual educational goal. They don't deserve to be teachers if they truly believe what you say they do. Cynth Charlie wrote: Cynth wrote: What bothers me the most is the attitude that somehow those who have developmental disabilities are considered as less than human I used to feel the same as you do, but I work in the public school system, and the Union Steward told us that there are certain classes where less is expected, and we are not to stand out because it makes the other teachers look bad. Physical Education, Special Ed, and the Arts and Crafts classes are basically classes where a lot of subbbing happens because most of the time the teachers that get assigned to those classes are there due to substance abuse issues. They take a lot of time off and that gives other teachers a chance to make extra money. However, if you hot-dog it, then you might get assigned the class permanently and that ruins if for everyone else. We make good money on Overtime, and nobody wants to rock the boat. I used to feel sorry for the poor kids, but now I realize that the less educated they are, the more funds that they qualify for from the social workers that help the parents. So it is a Win-Win situation. Current Book Discussion: any Zen book that you recently have read or are reading! Talk about it today! Yahoo! Re: [Zen] Are Retarded Kids Sentient Beings
Then you are not earning your pay. You are leeching off of the system just like everyone else where you work. I feel sorry for the kids under your care, cause they are stuck with people who don't give a f**k about them. Cynth Charlie wrote: At the High School where I teach, I often have to substitute in during my lunch hour for the Special Education class. It is not easy, as those kids are very sad and child-like even though they are teenagers. However, I can always use the extra money that I get paid for subbing for other teachers so I am willing to do it. Some of those retarded kids look so innocent that it makes me sad to think about them. Usually I leave the kids alone and go to the Teacher's Lounge and watch TVLand since Bonanza is only on for one hour now. Anyhow, there I was yesterday wondering if the kids counted as sentient beings. I have always imagined that they did have souls, but now that I see how simple they are I wonder if they do. I am tending to think that they don't. Then I will not feel bad when I leave them alone. I am not the only teacher that does that. As long as they don't attack each other, nobody finds out and it is like getting paid for free time. Do I have an obligation to try to teach them anything? I don't think anyone really tries. I am not the only one that sees them as just a way to make a few extra bucks. What is my obligation to these kids? Do I have any? As you can guess, I am at the computer at the Teacher's Lounge right now, and I have the TV on too. I am not the only one here. It is like skipping class, except we are the teachers! Re: [Zen] Re: Are Retarded Kids Sentient Beings
I am offended by the term being bandied about carelessly on this thread. Not so much because I'm Politically Correct (usually, I am not), but when I was in first grade my teacher and the school principal tried to coax my paternal grandmother (who was my legal guardian) to put me into a hospital for the retarded even though I was only having to deal with what is now commonly referred to as a math-related learning disability. I read several grade levels above my peers, but I was stymied by mathematics since, truth be told, my first year of school WAS first grade. What bothers me the most is the attitude that somehow those who have developmental disabilities are considered as less than human (as is advocated by eugenicists) and therefore it's okay to do whatever you like to them. I am convinced that the majority of children who are sexually abused are developmentally disabled because they are considered as fair game by those who think of them as lesser beings, which they most certainly are not. I would go so far to say that they can teach us a lot about living in the moment, which to my understanding is a key attribute of Zen. So they are very much sentient beings, thank you very much. Not only that, but they are the essence of what we wish we could find in our overcomplicated minds, but which has eluded us for too long. Cynth cid830 wrote: I am in no position to proclaim Sentient Beings. But I do worry for the safety of these children while they are unsupervised.
