[Zope] Zope 2.3.0b2 undo strangeness

2001-01-19 Thread Ron Bickers

I am getting transaction that show in the root folder's Undo screen that
look like this:

/index_html by Anonymous User
/welcome.html by Anonymous User
/commonbond.html by Anonymous User

There are multiple entries of these and a couple others, but by accessing
these pages, I can't seem to force one to be added to the Undo list.

One of these is a Python Script, and its modification time shows as the last
time one of the above entries was made. The transaction also shows in the
Undo tab of the Python Script itself.

The others are DTML Methods. Their modification time has not changed since
I last modified them weeks ago, and the transaction above does *not* show in
the DTML Method's Undo tab.

What's going on here?

It would be easy to apply the patch. The work would be in testing it. It seems
like getting it into the new release while it's still alpha would get a lot more
eyeballs looking at it. HiperDOM/XHTML may be the way of the future, but DTML is
what we've got. Why not make it a little bit easier to use if it doesn't take
much effort?

Yeah, so hey, DC, what gives? Why don't we have sequence_item and family or some
reasonable alternative? This has been dragging out for too long!

[Zope] ZAlert = 2.3b1 and ZBook out-of-sync ?

2001-01-19 Thread Jason Cunliffe

Hello

I like the revised Zope 2.3b management interface. Big improvement and step
in healthy UI direction. Thanks!

..I notice however, that the illustrations in the online version of the book
are now visually 'out of sync' with the new Zope software.
It may be trivial [non functional] matter and very tedious to fix, but is
surely worth considering..

For example:

The screen shot in Chapter 2
http://www.zope.org/Members/michel/ZB/UsingZope.html

does not display the actual interface in 2.3b1
etc etc ..

What to do?
Will this be fixed in the printed book?
Is it too late?
Does anyone care?
Does anyone have the time to update these?
Am I getting too carried away?

It would be a real shame to release the O'Reilly Book and immediately
confuse people running 2.3, who I believe the book is your target audience.
I believe it would also be a strategic mistake to release the book too soon
without making SURE it is as in-sync as possible for an obviously wider
audience.

Let's assume that 2001, as the [Asian] year of the Snake, is also the year
of Pyhon and [imo] the year of Zope. I estimate the Zope User population
will at least double during the next 12 months, probably triple. I also
expect serious Zope sites to catch on as Zopistas really start to apply
their knowledge. Plus I think that Zope will catch on in both business and
community [low-budget] applications.

The ORA Zope book will become #1 reading for all newcomers and version 2.3++
will be where they begin their journey. They won't know or care about the
'ZPython thingy' debates [a great name] or lots of other stuff. They will
care if the screen shots are all wrong and if there is no attempt to address
this problem. Of course they won't realize till they get home..

best wishes

[Zope] Re: Workflow and document management system in Zope

2001-01-19 Thread albert boulanger

I am looking for a workflow (WF) linked to a electronic document management
(EDM) system and a groupware email based (I have just happened to come
accross aethera from the Kompany) that would be free software and preferably
in Zope + Python. The WF+DEM system I am looking for need to be usable with
only a browser (to be independant from the client ... that could be
proprietary !), store its data into a postgresql database. It should be
demonstrablable (at least showable into a proof of concept) within 2 weeks
and be already installable and usable within 2 or 3 months. (I have obtained
taoday that the date when we'll decide on the system would be postponed 2
weeks from wednesday 24/1 to wed 7/2)
If I could find such a marvel, I may find the money to pay for it, at least
5 $ to start with (this amount is a rapid guess; I may give more precise
amounts we could spend in the following week)

The idea is to use that combination of tools INSTEAD of buying a closed,
proprietary solution (that may exist but be expensive and really har to
parametrize), that NEED to be linked to a SAP ERP system.

All suggestions and ideas are welcome, also on the selection criteria.

(I happen to be responsible for the IT dept of the public institution that
wants to buy such a tool, but be new in the place and do not yet know a lot
   about WF and EDM !)

Soon I may be able to give you more details about the requirements.

I don't think there is such as system polished and ready within 2
weeks. Here are some starting points:

use wftk as a basis, the open source workflow toolkit -- http://.vivtek.com/wftk

use openflow, a Zope based, but stalled project, http://openflow.sourceforge.net

use Chautauqua, an old python based workflow system,
http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~carlosm/chautauqua.html

use the old UCI Endeavors workflow (java) system
 at http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/endeavors/endeavors.html

We have not bit the bullet and built anything yet.

Re: [Zope] ZClasses and "title" property

2001-01-19 Thread Jason Cunliffe

Hi Tim,

I _think_ the problem may be that your choice of property is unlucky,
because 'title' is already defined by default in Zope.
Try changing it to something else and test. For example: 'timtitle'

In 2.3b1 you can go to the built in Help System by selecting 'Zope Quick
Start' + 'GO' [use the management top HTML frame]
Then use seerch for title and see what comes up... a long list since as you
will see.

Hope this helps. Welcome to wide, deep, free land of Zope ...and good luck!

RE: [Zope] ZClasses and "title" property

2001-01-19 Thread Loren Stafford

"title" is a "reserved" property; i.e. most objects automatically get a
title property when you create them, but you are trying to add another
property with the same name. Either use the "built-in" title property or use
a different id for your title.

I'm creating several ZClasses for the site I'm working on. In one of

it, I get the following error:

Error Type: Bad Request
Error Value: The id "title" is invalid--it is already in use.

I'm confused, because this seems to happen even when I make a
bare-bones minimal class, but a few of the examples I've found on the

I'm using version 2.3b1...is this a recent change in behavior or am I

[Zope] RE: Workflow and document management system in Zope

about WF and EDM !)

Soon I may be able to give you more details about the requirements.

-- quoted from your mails --
I am very interested in a general, fairly full featured workflow system
on top of Zope as opposed to using an external workflow product for a
fundamental reason. While one could come up with a way of getting what I
need with an external system, it would be messy. I need workflows to be
explicit and versioned. We make use of ZODB to version content that end
users generate. We don't make use of Zope's versioning but use or own
hierarchical version tree which is easy to do in Zope. End users
generate new workflows and revisit past workflows. The user sees this
versioning as notebook pages using a scientific notebook metaphor.

+ also

http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/endeavors/endeavors.html

See also the papers and the web-based workflow thesis at:

http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/endeavors/docs/papers/

It is much cleaner to use ZODB and ZPublisher to do all this instead of
having a version tree in Zope and a bunch of correspondences to outside
objects in an external workflow system. Thus, there is a lot of value
in having a fairly general workflow system whose representation and
   publishing uses ZODB and ZPublisher.

By the way, if there are other folks interested in such a workflow
system let me know. We may just bite the bullet and build one. I have
who will do most of the coding in mind.

> Especially I don't. What are the deadline you may think about ? What would
> be the developpement and support cost you or the people you can think about
> may charge ? (added by Nicolas)

What will be produced is a Zope-based workflow system with a java thin
client visual workflow/dataflow editor. Right now I do not have the funding
but folks with resources could speak now ;-).

> Here do I do it.

Thanks for your interest.

Nicolas

[Zope] ZClasses and "title" property

2001-01-19 Thread Tim Moore

Let me start by introducing myself...My name is Tim Moore and I'm new
to the list and Zope in general. I'm still figuring out how
everything works, so forgive me if I'm missing something basic here
:-)

I'm creating several ZClasses for the site I'm working on. In one of
them I'd like to have a property called "title", but when I try to add
it, I get the following error:

Error Type: Bad Request
Error Value: The id "title" is invalid--it is already in use.

I'm confused, because this seems to happen even when I make a
bare-bones minimal class, but a few of the examples I've found on the

I'm using version 2.3b1...is this a recent change in behavior or am I
doing something wrong? If this is a change, does this mean I have to
use a different property name, or is there some other way I can edit
this title property?

[Zope] ANNOUNCE: Zope 2.3.0 beta 2 released

2001-01-19 Thread Brian Lloyd

Hello all -

Zope 2.3.0 beta 2 is now available. You can download it
  from Zope.org:

  http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.3.0b2/

Highlights of the beta 2 release:

- Changed the implementation of emergency_user to be backward
compatible with the expectations of third-party user folders.
All third party user folders should now work with Zope 2.3 without
  modification.

- Zope is now much more tolerant of dependency problems in ZClasses.
Some people were experiencing problems porting Products to upgraded
Zope sites when their products contained ZClasses derived from
base classes in other products (which may or may not have been
installed on the new site). Zope is now much smarter about
managing and recovering from failed base class dependencies and
will re-register broken ZClasses when the missing Product causing
  the problem is installed.

- Fixes for several other (more minor) bugs reported from beta 1

For more information on what is new in this release, see the
CHANGES.txt and HISTORY.txt files for the release:

The sendmail tag should raise an exception, if it is unable
to deliver the message to the mail server.

However, this does not mean that the message will reach the
recipients. Well behaving mail servers will return a mail
that is undeliverable, though.

dtml-sendmail does not log the messages, but the mail server
probably does.

You know proxy roles?
You could probably use a method or script with a proxy role
of "Manager" to return the property sheet.
I am not sure, whether it is a good idea, though.

Thanks!

I had done exactly that, prior to writing my request for help. It turns out
the problem was not Zope at all (surprise, surprise) or my code. I was
using a test case that sent the message to an address aliased to my address
and then was also Cc'ing the message to my address. The mailer (Exim)
apparently is smart enough to notice that they are one in the same and only
send 1 piece of mail.

In the end it was all my fault for shortsightedly not looking at the actual
headers and just assuming the mail would come.

This has happened to me, when I uninstalled a product by removing the Python

I then reinstalled the product, and removed all instance of it on the site.
Then I could remove the Python files and restart nicely.

There really ought to be a "remove product" option in the controll panel,
that recursively removed all instances in the zope hierachy, and then moved
the python files to an "Uninstalled" directory. I cannot imagine that it
would be difficult.

Well here it is,

I have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, upgraded, and re-upgraded Zope
more that 25 times in the last 2 weeks. When I get Zope 2.1.6 installed
and running and upgrade using rpms to Zope 2.2.2 the server goes down and
comes back up witout a problem. But as soon as I manually restart the
server, this error occurs:

zope status

zwatchdog dead but pid file exists
zserver is stopped

So I kill everything, and delete the pids and locks

/var/run/zwatchdog.pid
/var/lock/subsys/zope

And I must be an idiot, so somebody help me out here. What's going on?

[Jerry]
This may be the link you were thinking of:

http://www.omg.org/technology/documents/formal/corba_business_specifications
_av2.htm

with the Corba Workflow Specification available as a .PDF.

[AlbertL]
Yes. The Task and Session spec there is also very relevant.
The Workflow Spec is based directly on the work done by the
Workflow Management Coalition mentioned by Albert Boulanger.

I haven't checked the original (1993) from the coalition
but the Corba document is more modern (1.20, April 2000)
with UML diagrams as well as IDL and diagrams similar to
those on Albert Boulanger's web page.

However I am also referring to the "Corba Electronic
Commerce Domain Specifications" 1.0 which I don't think
is listed among omg formal published documents yet.

This extends to concepts such as "Community", "Membership",
"Collaboration" and "Voting" which I think are highly relevant to
PTK. Plus detailed elaboration of state machine triggers
and transitions etc and more specifically ecommerce
related stuff on negotiations and contractual obligations.

The related "Negotiation Facility" is listed at:

http://www.omg.org/technology/documents/recent/corba_e-commerce.htm

and also worth a look.

But the one I particularly recommend isn't even listed on their home page:
http://www.omg.org/homepages/ecdtf/index.htm

Had a good look now, but I'm afraid I've lost the URL for it.
Can email a copy (1MB).

I was also referring to the "OSM Digital Product Architecture",
20 November 2000, which has the XML state machines spec.

http://home.osm.net/supporting/index.html

http://home.osm.net/supporting/DPA.0011B.pdf

Strongly recommend close study of all of these.
(A lot has happened since 1993 ;-)

RE: [Zope] searching names in a query

2001-01-19 Thread Farrell, Troy

Jacintha,
This is from the Gadfly SQL support page at:
http://www.chordate.com/kwParsing/gfSQL.html
*

Some important omissions from ODBC 2.0 at this point are

Nulls.
Outer joins.
CHECK conditions.
Enforced data type constraints.
Alter table (can't implement until NULLs arrive).
Date, Time, and Interval data types
It is hoped these will be implemented at some future time.

Less important omissions include

Cursor based updates and deletes
(justification: if you really need them the db design
is flawed, and it's possible to use python instead).
LIKE string predicate
(justification: use Python regexes in python code).
Users and permissions
(justification: Gadfly is not intended for full multiuser
   use at this time).
*

Note that Gadfly does not support LIKE. They suggest that you use regexes
in python code. I may be totally wrong, but in order to do this, you must
use external methods. Anyone know better?

2001-01-19 Thread Farrell, Troy

Yes, we all wish we were on *N[UI]X.
However the question was "How do we shut this thing down?" Using
ThroughTheWeb(TTW) scripting:
http://usernamewithabilitytoshutdownzope:password@zopeserver:8080/Control_Pa
nel/manage_shutdown
adjust the portnumber to match your server.

You can do this with just about anything. Those ZopeBook blasphemers even
showed that MSWord could be used to script Zope:
http://www.zope.org/Members/michel/ZB/ScriptingZope.html
Last example.
Most people would use something like wget. :)

If you want to use a python script (not to be confused with PythonScript),
look at zclient:

Hi Nicolas,

The most important factor can be viewed from two perspectives,
neither precluding the other.

The ideal state arrives when complete documentation is available,

[Zope] workflow, gdchart

2001-01-19 Thread Klaus Herrmann

HI *!

I have 2 questions on Zope:
(1) I need a configurable workflow management (who approves documents, who may
delete documents, emails send to supervisors etc, all configurable) for Zope.
are there any useable products available or do i have to learn python (seems to
be a good idea anyway) and implement something like this myself?

(2) Is there any documentation out there for gdchart-0.5? i installed the demo
but the interesting parts are broken (at least they appear to be), so i can't
figure out how it all works :-(
any tutorials, how-tos, reference docs etc.?

please CC messages to my address as i'm not acually subscribed to the list.

thanks in advance!

regards,
Klaus

How, indeed, do I " build this extension using the included Setup

I would be more than happy to write up some documentation (on

Since CVS is file based, everything you export is stored as a file during
the CVS phase. One of the remaining puzzles is how to improve management of
Zope Objects that aren't very "file like", such as ZClasses. The file
representation of these are less directly editable, but at the very least
you can tell when and who made updates, and quickly see what has changed.

I can't really help you, but I'd consider it much wiser to
try and find the _reason_ that causes the slowdown.
Start by tracking the memory usage, CPU usage etc.
Check the list archives -I've watched many threads on
this issue.
Another thing: I'd consider running Zope+Apache on
NT workstation or 2000 professional, even for test

One thing more... One week before this happened I
had to remove a poll (Amos Latteier's Poll product, version 0.7.1) it messed

[Zope] Calling ZSQL from PythonMethods (was RE: [Zope] ZSQL, Python methods and XMLRPC)ods and XMLRPC)

Hmm - with regard calling ZSQL method from PythonMethod, this works:

def pythonmethod(self):
a = []
for v in self.SQL_list_something():
a.append(v.field)
return a

*But* of course I can't pass "self" over XMLRPC. Why does self.ZSQL_method()
work, but:

def pythonmethod(meth):
a = []
for v in meth():
a.append(v.field)
return a

Give "__call__ not defined"?

I've three questions (but I'm making progress!):

1) In 2.2.5, how can I call a ZSQL method from a Python Method - I'm passing
the method in as a parameter, and the furthest I get says "__call__ not
defined".

Do PythonScripts obivate the need for this? I assume I can just do this:

for record in context.folder.subfolder.SQL_method(val1='a',val2='b'):
# do stuff

Does that work?

2) When calling a DTML method over XMLRPC, doesn't work, but does. Why?

3) Why aren't record values (the return of an SQL method) marshallable over
XMLRPC. I get this:

cannot marshal objects

[Zope] Reading ZClass properties from outside the ZClass

I have a ZClass, "MyZClass" which contains 2 propertysheets,

PublicInfo contains Selections produced from Lists in PrivateInfo. Works
wonderfully, however in the site I wish to get at the PrivateInfo items
without touching an Instance of MyZClass (Its easy that way but I cannot
be sure that instance will always be there).

Basically I need to do something like...

This works when logged in as an Administrator as the Control_Panel is
visible then, however for normal users it fails.

Is there a way to get at these details without asking an instance? I'm
assuming that the answer is no due to the security aspect but it would
be preferable in this case to have the List in the ZClass rather than in
the site content (perhaps in the root folder properties).

I've suppose I could use a Proxy role but I wonder if there is something
as simple as..

 without doing

want to change the userAuthenticate Method there was a problem. I can´t
get into the Managementview of my testfolder. Always when I click on the
testfolder in the Managementscreen of ZOPE, it returns the index_html of
the testfolder in the viewscreen and not in the managementscreen. This
problem only returns when I login with my User. With other users it
doesn´t.

By the way, it is called "anchors" not "bookmarks". Bookmarks is in

Re: [Zope] Zope vs. Apple's WebObjects

2001-01-19 Thread Francisco =?iso-8859-1?Q?Jos=E9?= Esteban =?iso-8859-1?Q?Risue=F1o?=

We evaluated both products before starting our web project.

We chose Zope because of its price (this was the main reason), and its better
integration with the database. The message of WebObjects regarding to the
database was: "forget SQL and let Enterprise Object Framework manage your
data". We knew a lot about SQL and nothing about EOF and in Zope, this
knowledge about SQL is very useful.

Re: [Zope] Tools used for programming Zope

2001-01-19 Thread Steve Spicklemire

In it's current released form ZCVSMixin really does help with
a lot of the configuration/process problems in developing
with Zope. You can still 'grep' for stuff, and it is
possible to perform simple edits in the xml representation
without much fear of actually breaking anything (it's pretty
obvious where the text of a method is stored etc.. ). However I
have not really found this necessary. We use ZCVSMixin all
the time, and (almost) never touch the filesystem directly.

1) Each developer works in their own Zope, with their
own local 'checkout' of the project (many projects
involve both instantiated Zope objects, and Python Product
source code, all of which are managed in CVS).

2) When you are 'editing' a Zope object you use
an editor that knows about FTP (e.g., emacs), WebDAV or
a web browser.

3) You can use the 'normal' CVS process (update, modify, checkin).

4) You can still do sensible 'diffs' on the xml representation
and get a pretty good idea about what's happening.

5) It's easy to set up a 'test' Zope, and a 'live' Zope each of which
also has access to CVS. Periodically we update the 'test' Zope and let
users bang away at it looking for bugs. When we're ready for an
update to the live server we checkin our code tag it... (you can still
use the filesystem CVS commands to tag versions recursively!) and then
update the live server (inside a Zope Version) to that tag. When we
save the Zope version we are fully updated. You still need to 'know too
much' to use this process effectively, but, it is a pretty workable
process, especially for a site that is constantly evolving (are
there sites out there that *don't* constantly evolve?)

It has also turned out that we occasionally need to make a
*really* simple change on the live server... (there is no
way this could possibly break anything... so I'll just change
it!). As silly as that sounds.. it happens. It's nice to know
that we can simply check that change in.. and know that all
the developers will get it.. even though they are working
on different systems.

There are still a few annoying bugs, and there are several major
issues that need to be addressed:

http://dev.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Proposals/SynchronizationMechanismZCVSMixin

I'm hoping to "get some time" soon to address some of these things.
In the mean time... it's probably worth a look.

[Zope] Zope vs. Apple's WebObjects

2001-01-19 Thread Etienne Labuschagne

Hi all

A friend of mine knows Apple's WebOjects and Enterprise Object framework
quite well and is quite impressed with it. He wants to know if there is a
"nutshell" comparison between this product and Zope and how they compare
(apart obviously from the eh, slight price difference!).

Any pointers or comments will be greatly appreciated!

[Zope] Another problem with Login Manager

2001-01-19 Thread Steffen Bergmann

With the help from yesterday I got the Login Manager started. But if I
want to change the userAuthenticate Method there was a problem. I can´t
get into the Managementview of my testfolder. Always when I click on the
testfolder in the Managementscreen of ZOPE, it returns the index_html of
the testfolder in the viewscreen and not in the managementscreen. This
problem only returns when I login with my User. With other users it
doesn´t.

That's the same thing as I do. What about you other people, are you
actually doing serious application development in ZClasses? Maybe it's
just me, but that doesn't seem very Zopish to me. However, I do agree
that people tend to do ZClass development before going to Python Products,
and since the (in my opinion) worst solution is chosen first, some of the
less subborn ones might abandon Zope.

However, I'm not quite sure I consider that a problem. Not with Itamars
Guide anyway :).

Happy Zoping!

I agree it is one of the MAIN problems with Zope. You have my support. A good way to
have a read-write (at least a readonly) view of the ZODB would change things a lot.

I've never understood the reaction that always comes from DC w.r.t. patches that
fix that.

There always seems to be a huge 'no!' for no particular reason, even though that
would save _so_ many people _so_ much time and effort :-(
