[Zope-Coders] [Zope2.9] Schedule

2005-10-31 Thread Andreas Jung

Hi everyone,

with Zope 2.9 and Zope 3.2 we are switching to a time-based release cycle.
Major release are supposed to appear every six months (December and June).

For Zope 2.9 the schedule is as follows:

- 2.9 beta 1 on 2005-11-07
- 2.9 beta 2 aka RC1 on 2005-11-20
- 2.9 final on 2005-12-01

The 2.9 SVN branch will be created for the 2.9 beta 1 release. After
creation the 2.9 branch will be feature-frozen and open only for bug-fixes.

The trunk is then open again for new features (Zope 2.10).

We are planning a bug day for Zope 2.9 and Zope 3.2 for this Friday,
November 4th (somewhere on irc.freenode.net, channel to be announced).

Cheers,
Andreas

[Zope-Coders] Schedule Zope 2.8.2/2.7.8

2005-09-14 Thread Andreas Jung

Hi,

I plan to release Zope 2.8.2 + 2.7.8 on 12.9.2005.
As discussed a while ago I will release minor releases without going
through a beta cycle except when there are critical fixes that need further
testing.

[Zope-Coders] Zope 2.8.1 final

2005-08-06 Thread Andreas Jung
Heads up for the upcoming Zope 2.8.1 final release. I will cut the release
on Thursday this week. This will be - as the name says - the final release
so there won't be any further beta releases. So fixes and whatever must be
commited before Thursday. Depending on the number of fixes that will happen
after the 2.8.1 release I will focus on a 2.8.2 release in mid-October
(after a longer vacation :-)).

Are working ZClasses no longer a requirement for Zope? (This is not a
flame, just a question). There's plenty of people out there with
ZClass-based products, so if 2.8 is going to ship with broken ZClass,
there should probably be a reasonably prominent warning in the release
notes about this.

According to Jim ZClasses are working. A possibly isolated bug in ZClasses
is bad but there are in general lots of such bugs in Zope. So this is not
a release stopper for me now. We have discussed ZClasses already and about
how ZClasses can be maintained in the future. Since I see little commitment
to ZClasses (except from Jim) ZClasses are not really a blocker for *this*
2.8.0 release. We defered this release already a bunch of times and it is
now time to get 2.8.0 with Five and MVCC support to people. This is much,
much more important for Zope than having to care about ZClasses. People can
stick with Zope 2.7 if there is a problem for them with ZClasses in the
hope that someone fixes outstanding ZClasses in a further 2.8 release. I
don't care getting some beatings for my opinon that ZClasses are a neat
ancient toy but not the tool of choice for nowadays Zope applications. We
need a strong ZODB with MVCC and we need Five to bridge the world to Zope
3. And therefore ZClasses are absolutely not a reason to block the 2.8.0
release.

Definitely needed.
So let's do it. Amen. Tagging a package should not be so much overhead
for the maintainer.
More generally, all releases of all projects P should be done against
tags of all P's external dependencies.
right.

The ZODB in 2.8 is currently not an svn:external but a local copy as
well? Right?
No. Do you ever use SVN ? Go to a shell right now, cd to the
root of a Zope 2.8 checkout, and type:
...still learning to fly :-)
The first time ZConfig and zdaemon get tagged, it's important that
whoever do that first search all clients (ZODB and both Zopes) for
changes to those checked in from a wrong project, and do merges back
to ZConfig and zdaemon (I explained that dance last time) -- else
those changes (if any) will get lost.
That's a job for loosers :-) but I will take it over for ZConfig and
ZDaemon..
maybe not for the next beta but hopefully for the final for 2.8.1 release.

Jim likes copies better than externals. If you can get him to explain
why, you should win a fabulous prize . But, regardless, you and
Brian (I think) are in charge of Zope 2.8 now, so "your project, your
call" rules.
Well it is not my job to convince Jim of anything :-) I do care about Zope 2
and I will try to maintain it in a sane way and in way where we have little
trouble and little time to spend instead of maintaining multiple versions
of stuff laying around.
So for Zope 2.8 this means to me:
- the ZConfig and zdaemon should have a minimal release management (means
stable released should be tagged properly)
- ZODB development can be done against any version
- ZODB releases should done against a dedicated ZConfig, zdaemon release
  (means something tagged)
- the local copies of ZConfig, zdaemon in Zope 2.8 will replaced by
svn:externals
  (using a dedicated tag)

The ZODB in 2.8 is currently not an svn:external but a local copy as well?
Right?

It might also make sense to tag ZConfig+ZODB together since ZODB depends on
ZConfig.

People who think they understand those projects first need to make
tags, so Zope 2.8 has something to point _to_. Also, Zope, Zope3, and
ZODB should all coordinate to make sure they're using the same tags
for zdaemon and ZConfig. Else, e.g., I develop ZODB using a ZConfig
that doesn't match the one Zope uses, and then things break when Zope
moves to a newer ZODB.
So am I right that you develop the ZODB already against two different
ZConfig versions
(for Zope 2.8 and Zope 3)? So an unique ZConfig repository does make sense
to you
- of course only it is used by everyone. For me it would make perfect
sense to get
rid of the local copies since it removes the need to maintain multiple
copies.

One one the root level

the most current version the master?
[yuppie]
Other copies are here:
http://svn.zope.org/Zope3/trunk/src/ZConfig/
http://svn.zope.org/ZODB/trunk/src/ZConfig/
Also copies in various branches and tags of the above.
Note that all the same goes for zdaemon too.
Maybe using svn:external would make the dependencies more obvious?
Yup -- although so far there isn't a tag to point at, for either
zdaemon or ZConfig.
A quick diff over the the ZConfig trunk and the version 2.8 shows that the
ZConfig
version on the trunk is the "maintained" version. But I have no idea about
zdaemon.
From my point of view it would make sense to replace the copies in the 2.8
tree
with external references for the next beta...any objections?

I will release 2.7.6 final on Friday and not today (as planned) because to

[Zope-Coders] BTreeFolder2 for Zope 2.8?

2005-04-23 Thread Andreas Jung
Any objections to move BTreeFolder2 into the Zope core for Zope 2.8?
BTF is widely used in the Zope, CMF & Plone world and it would not hurt
to ship it with Zope.

[Zope-Coders] Zope 2.7.6 release schedule

2005-04-06 Thread Andreas Jung
The schedule for the next Zope release is a follows:
2.7.6 b1: April 13th
2.7.6 RC1: April 20th
2.7.6 final: April 27th
Although 2.7.5 had been relased lately, yesterdays hotfix and another bug
justify a new release this month.

All the substantive changes I needed to make were completed last
night, and the overnight test runs were successful. I still need to
write up ZODB NEWS, fiddle the version numbers, make a 3.4a1 release
tag, and edit the svn:externals in Zope trunk to point at that tag.
That's all very low risk, so just assume it's been done if I don't say
anything else later.
Still, explicit is better than implicit: that's all been done, are
there are no remaining ZODB issues holding up release of Zope 2.8a2.

Excellent!
Thanks,
Andreas

Hi Andreas - please don't cut the release until we get the
