Bernie,
I would agree with your suspicions. However, your comment about "lack of ferrule support" raised an eyebrow.
I've never heard of a ferrule adding anything other than cosmetic support to a club head.

Carl,

I've also done a number of these "DIY slit taper tips" with my Dremel and
did have one club that failed. It was kind of an emergency fix for a 6-iron
using a very light Brunswick UCV 2000 S steel shaft (about 96 grams) from a
few years back that I tried in an iron set and pulled. This friend (good
player age 70 and still walking the course carrying his bag shooting mid-70s
to mid-80s) has an old set of Zings, hits down hard into the tough Bermuda
and practices a lot. He liked the quick-fix club and played well with
it...for about 6 months. Then, he said that he couldn't get it up in the air
anymore. Was obvious why...the shaft was bent about 20% back right at the
hosel. Don't know if it was just because of the light shaft and thin wall,
the lack of ferrule support or perhaps the slits weakend the tip too much.
The slits were a full 3/4" below the bend in the shaft, however, so I
suspect it was a shaft wall failure and that the DIY taper tip didn't play
any part in the problem. No more light shafts for this guy. :-)
