Air India (AI, and Indian Airlines is IC not IA .. both getting merged
and renamed to "Air Indian") flights between metros are at very awkward
times - like 2 in the morning. Quite useful though if you land in Delhi
or Bombay for some reason and need to connect to Madras.

A slightly better idea than spending the rest of the night in a more or
less deserted terminal, all lounges, shops etc closed, and then catching
the first domestic flight out at 6:30 or 7 in the morning.

Air India Express (IX) is rather better though - brand new 737-800s
configured in LCC single class config (189 seats, tiny amounts of
legroom but adequate for short flights). Unfortunately they seem to
have maybe one or two flights a week MAA-BOM .. probably as shuttle
flights to move aircraft around the country for use on other routes
