I have been subscribed to upwards of 20 yahoo groups at one time for
many months at a time. I have had none of those problems, but I do have
a very good anti-virus and anti-spam barrier.
There are some groups that have been abandoned (no owner or moderators),
and those groups can be rampant with spam. For those groups I read them
only on the web and do not have messages delivered to my inbox. In fact,
because yahoo groups do have archives, I mainly now read them on the web
only, it makes no sense to have tons of messages coming to my computer,
with possible attendant risks, when I can read them online, and can
refer to group archives as needed.

Dear Hank:
Yep and if you use yahoo - they spam you really bad, AND somehow - not
sure how, but they get ahold of your primary email and I had a virus
almost get me about 3 - 4 years ago.
They almost wiped me out at one point - so I no longer subscribe to any
yahoo newsgroups...
