Michael and Tony, thank you for all your prompt comments on this - thank
you for sharing your Patton expertise.

The motivation for my question is that we are in the process of defining
the design approach to be used for addressing XECS-415. One of the
avenues explored would require the gateway to be challenged by the sipX.
I'm not so much interested about whether or not the gateway can REGISTER
itself - the important part is that it can respond to a challenge. The
hypothetical scenario would be like this: call comes in from PSTN.
Gateway presents that incoming call to sipX over SIP. sipX, seeing that
the domain part of the From: header matches its own concludes that the
call originator is a local user and therefore challenges the caller to
authenticate its identity.

Keep in mind that this scenario is *very* hypothetical and I'm only
mentioning it to satisfy your curiosity :) I know that Patton is one of
the gateways that is used often with sipX and I wanted to check if it
supported that capability before going any further.

I will send it in the form of a question to Patton Could you please correct or
clean up my question to make sure it is viewed properly by them?

"I have a configuration/functionality question regarding the SmartNode gateways
running SmartWare 5.1. In looking at a particular feature, we would like to
know if the following is possible:

A call comes in from PSTN to the Smartnode. The SmartNode presents the call to
out local voip pbx (which is the proxy). When the call is presented the "FROM"
header shows the local domain qnd challenges the caller (SmartNode) to
authenticate its identity.

So without registering does the Smartnode have the ability to authenticate its
identity if challenged by the local proxy to complete a call?"

Please feel free to modify this in some way that makes the nest sense. Once I
have it back, I will send it to them.

Thanks,

Tony
