So I reviewed the openfire/error.log and it turns out that the IM client does like my wildcard certificate for *.sunyulster.edu as it does not match hostname ecs1.sipx.sunyulster.edu. I re-generated the self signed certificate using the /usr/bin/ssl-cert tools. The find command is working agian.
I will need to get a dedicated certificate for the host once the we migrate to the new server. Thanks for everyone's replies.
