Aldo,
I did a little bit more study, and found that the N8230 that I
downloaded from ftp://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/pub/cats/I/220/GSC/ also
works when I put it in a folder I called /GSC-comp/, and then
checked the "HST GSC compact" box and set the reference to this
directory. I only had this one zone in the catalog folder, and when
I moved to a different part of the sky, CdC wanted to read a zone
from a CD. This confirms Patrick's success as well.
Now, I actually went to the ftp site, and not your http site. This
may be one difference of importance. (I don't know if these two
URLs, yours and mine, point to the exact same file, but I suspect
they don't since Patrick had to unzip the http'd file and I didn't
have to unzip the ftp'd file.) When you get to the ftp site, then
each of the 24 directories are visible. I simply right-clicked and
dragged N8230 to my desktop, and selected "Copy". It took a few
minutes to download, but I didn't have to do any further
decompression. What I got was not a .tar file, as I suggested
earlier, but the compact binary .gsc file itself. If you open it
with Notepad, you'll see that there are a lot of non-printing
characters - a sure sign of some sort of binary file. If I open
my "original FITS" files, they are all ASCII (and hence expand to
1.18 GB instead of 330+ MB).
It sure is a lot of time-consuming downloading, but if you are
still stuck, then I would recommend COPYing N8230 from the ftp
address above, as I did, putting it in a folder called anything you
like, e.g. GSC-compact, and then starting CdC and pointing the
catalog selector for "compact" to that directory. If you then go to
the NCP, you can zoom in and see for yourself that the GSC stars are
represented. Don't forget to set the magnitude limit in "Stars1"
faint enough so that you don't filter them out. If it works for you,
you can then go about copying the other 23 directories, which as you
know will take a while!
  Hope this helps,
Dick
