Thanks a lot for your help! Now my GSC files work nice, thanks to Patrick suggestion. In effect, I should never be able to find that winzip was decompressing the .tar files in the wrong way! So I don't need to download again the files from another site. But I followed also Dick suggestion (I didn't know that it was possible to copy a directory dragging from ftp to my desktop: simple and easy!). Of course, also in this way GSC works correctly. I downloaded the N0000 directory only to make check around the pole. In conclusion, there are at least two ways to get the GSC files: 1) -go to http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/ftp- index?/ftp/cats/bincats/GSC_1.1 -in each directory there is a tar file; download all these files (i.e. http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/ftp- index?/ftp/cats/bincats/GSC_1.1/N8230/.tar you will obtain _cdsarc_cats_bincats_GSC_1[1].1_N8230.tar) -unzip each .tar file into the corresponding directory (i.e. the previous file into c:/ciel/cat/gsc/N8230 (with the correct winzip setting as Patrick suggested) 2) -go to ftp://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/pub/cats/I/220/GSC/ -drag N0000,... (but not all in the same time!) directories into c:/ciel/cat/gsc directory The second method is simpler; with the first method the download looks a bit faster, but more time is needed to build the directory tree.
