Synaptic is teh r0x0r for GUI apt goodness. I still use apt-get a lot
but for people new to Ubuntu/Debian synaptic can be a godsend.

I can see why this might be, sometimes the pre-built packages don't
contain the latest bug-fixes or are even a version or two behind the
source.
