The platform version you downloaded should be fine. We still have a couple of 
machines running older versions but are currently updating to the latest 2017 
image).

The disk issue seems odd. Does the disk show up in the server BIOS boot 
messages?
Also, has that disk been used with a ZFS filesystem that might cause the 
installer to derail (yes, I read that you zeroed the disk)?
Lastly, is the disk ok when booting another OS like a Linux Live CD/DVD or so?
