have you got an external disk that you can install the OS on 
fresh to do a test run? That would probably answer the question 
better than any third-party advice.

Sometimes you do need to reinstall it! Stuff seems to get 
corrupted or damaged over time, and one little file doesn't 
work, and something major doesn't work...
