One last effort.
Try connecting the answerphone as close to the main BT socket in the
house, just in case there is interference (which might then be eliminated).
If not, it seems that a new answering machine is the next step (hoping
that does not have the same problem!!!).
I am quite pleased with my set-up.
I have separate answerphone (very old now, PHONELOG ADAM), set to answer
on 4th ring tone.
My FAX FRIEND by AVRO PACIFIC automatically diverts a FAX on hearing a
FAX tone
(or if I dial 10 to transfer an answered incoming call).
Not yet passed on to the museum as they are still working perfectly.
