Chris,

I fear that the problem is terminal. Whilst trying to see whether Airport was 
switched on, the screen filled with horizontal lines and then gradually faded 
to grey, then nothing. I was hoping to clone the hard drive contents to an 
external drive, but now that doesn't seem possible. There is a mass of 
important stuff on there that has not been backed-up and I was hoping to 
retrieve it before the PowerBook finally gave up the ghost.

It's sad that after nine years of perfect service, it should just roll over and 
die.
