Hi Ranulph You can drag the entire library from your home > Pictures folder onto your external disk, then open iPhoto and it'll see the library's missing then ask for the new location.
If you want a select bunch of photos, just open iPhoto and drag them from iPhoto onto the external disk icon in the finder, it'll copy the photos to the drive from where you can then import them into the new iPhoto library.
