In the end I managed to revert to my Address Book backup and then used
the advanced tab to replace the data on Google. I lost my contact
groups in Google in the shuffle of course, which kind of sucks, but at
least my contacts seem to be back to normal. I've done subsequent
syncs and they seem to have gone smoothly.
