So can anyone clarify the options now that I've decided to ditch
MobileMe calendar?

Thus far, my routine has been:
1) calendar entries lived locally on my desktop computer
2) they got synced back and forth to the MobileMe cloud
3) the cloud synced back and forth with an iPhone 3G running iOS 4
4) I periodically ran a manual 1-way sync from the desktop ("never
change iCal") to Google via Spanning Sync as a sort of remote backup

Due to the impending changes, today I disabled MobileMe calendar
syncing and elected Google as the cloud. Will Spanning Sync perform
two-way syncs between the desktop and Google after May 5th now that I
took MobileMe out of the loop? Then is there any way to get 2-way
syncing between Google calendar and the iPhone's calendar app --- or
have I just doomed myself to launching and signing into the Google
mobile calendar every time I need to view/change an upcoming
appointment?
