As I undertand it you could have continued with the way you were working after accepting the MobileMe update!
My calendar resides on my Mac and syncs with updated MobileMe, my iPhone and my iPod. OK, I know that, in truth, it resides on MobileMe -- but I don't see much of a difference with that little thing -- other than my "To Do's" getting re-ordered every so often. I works just the same on my Mac and iPhone. I can change entries using the Mac, the iPhone and MobileMe over the web (the latter is just really, really, really slow from the UK). Spanning Sync updates my Google Calendar whenever I let it. Changes made with Google DON'T go anywhere -- a bit like your description of 1- way sync. I hope this helps.
