Heh.. funnily enough I agree. If someone out there actually took up the role of "Benevolent Dictator" in Spectra open source, we would probably contribute -- we still have several major clients who run Spectra and who we support daily. We've already released several Spectra enhancements -- but you'd be surprised how difficult and time consuming it is to get something into a distributable shape that is generic enough to work in most installations. Especially since there is no commercial benefit in doing so -- it becomes a labour of love. Daemon Spectra Stuff http://farcry.daemon.com.au/go/spectra Having run an open source project of the same sort of size since April this year, I can tell you first hand that there is a lot of work involved -- a lot. Especially since we are managing active feature development and not simply bug fixes. It's not a decision we took lightly and something we researched quite thoroughly before getting involved. With FarCry for instance we run several open CVS repositories (http://code.daemon.com.au/), several mailing lists (http://farcry.daemon.com.au/go/support/mailing-lists), and a comprehensive issue tracking database (http://farcry.daemon.com.au/go/support/known-issues) at the same time as driving ongoing feature development. We aggressively support the mailing lists, and our enthusiasm appears to be igniting other developers interest. We also do our best to support external developers ideas as best we can -- giving credit to everyone we can no matter how small the contribution. It's hard work but every day we build more confidence in the community. Clearly our business has sufficient number of commercially supported FarCry clients to support this model. Given the anxiety associated with our own decision to move our business to this sort of service model I find it hard to see people taking the plunge with Spectra. But I may be wrong, and if anyone is brave enough to give it a try, we'd probably throw some resources behind the effort now and then.
