Each camera has different film loaded in it, as I'm beginning to think more in terms of "situational film" (depending on the weather or lighting conditions, one film may be superior to another -- hey, you don't use the same lens in every situation!!!). The FM has K200, the FE has Velvia and the FE2's have K64, Provia and E200 pushed to ASA 800. Standard procedure has two cameras around my neck at any given time (usually an FE2 with K64 and the 35-105 zoom and the FM with K200 and the 70-210 zoom -- these cameras are used because the FE2 has a busted ASA ring stuck on 64 and the FM's ASA ring is so screwed up I'm afraid to change it, as it reads ASA 700 but gives on-the-money results with K200). I almost always shoot each scene with both cameras, since I usally have time to put one down and pick up the other (except on the Northeast Corridor). I'll shoot a frame with the FM at 210mm, then use the other camera and shoot almost anywhere in the 35-105 range, depending on what works best. If the lighting falls apart, I'll put the 35-105 on the FE2 with the Provia. If the weather is really dark and the subject isn't moving very fast (preferably not at all) then I'll go to Velvia for that extra colorful zing (and purple Conrail engines). Since all cameras are interchangeable, if one gives out I can easil;y switch the Kodachrome over to any of the other FE2's. Also, since they all use identical batteries I am seldom caught with dead batteries in the field. If I have no new batteries handy I just cannibalize whatever camera is not getting used that day. And all five take my two MD-11 winders, so I just put the winders on the two cameras that are going to get the most work. Putting together this interchangeable fleet wasn't very expensive, either. Only the FM was bought new (in 1980). The FE's, the 2X converter and many of the lenses came off the used market.
