When doing vertical turbine calcs, I have given my pump a dummy source, such as a 5 foot long 10" diameter pipe and then run this through the pump curve in the calculation software. My source is zero pressure and flow so all pressure and flow at the discharge of the pump is a result of the pump curve that I input.
Keep in mind that your pump discharge elevation is actually at about the top of the bowls. What looks like the "discharge flange" for a vertical turbine pump is actually just a 90 degree turn for where the water enters your piping above your tank or reservoir. I believe the rated capacity of vertical turbine pumps is assuming a drained tank with the water level just above the bowls; so, if your water level is any higher than this, you will have a higher discharge pressure than shown on the pump rating. Using a vertical shaft pump, is it acceptable to begin my calcs at the pump discharge. For example...a 1000 gpm pump at 100 lbs. My source node will be 1000 at 100 psi. Any problem doing this?? Thanks in advance. Geoffrey H.
